Windows XP Tuning

I got a fast XPP mostly by turning off services. Goog 'BlackViper Service Configurations'. Then I use a few utilities for the rest; SafeXP, Seconfig, CodeStuff Starter 5628 and TCPOptimize. Further I use Sandboxie to run in a virtual, disposable internet session or to tryout exes before install on the real system. I take out what I want into the real system and throw the whole container, and any viruses away, they NEVER touch the real system. I dont use antivirus at all - for years. =FAST XP

lol linux and mac are not better. Go check the "msconfig" on linux or mac they have NO services, only visual effects. If people started making viruses for mac or linux they would be dead. If you were to make a virus you would make it for windows because more people use it. If more people used mac or linux they would be overflowed with viruses they they can't handle.

Of course they don't that's how come I put quotes around msconfig. And yes I have used Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mac osx. They are shockingly good, but when I found out they were good because they don't run servers that protect your come I was let down.

They do write viruses for Linux and Mac. And they make anti-virus software for such a task. And if it came down to actually buttoning down the OS. I feel that at least one person in the Linux community as a whole has probably posted somewhere exactly how to do it.

There is a book out there with the title "Hacking Ubuntu". Has an entire part dedicated to securing your system. Have the book in my library. Have no idea why it slipped my mind. I imagine it would work with other Debian distro's. And to one extent or another other distro's as well. And the anti-virus I use is Avast of all things. Though there is one available through the Ubuntu package manager.

In case your wondering. I like Ubuntu because it's usable with minimal effort on my part.

Use mine for a little more than web browsing. I also use it for the office suite (which I also use in Windows btw) and Ubuntu One. About 2 gig of remote storage that I can automatically synchronize some of what I use to. Also use Tomboy Notes and Thunderbird Shredder (also available for Windows). And use Cedega for gaming.

Also use Apache and Python from time to time. And when the occasion pops up gcc and g++ for compiling in C and C++.

It's more usable than you think.

Apache is server usage (the way Linux was ment to be used for) and Python can't compile. Unless you only want Linux users to use your program and not spreading it.

More people using an os = more advantages.

Also if it didn't make be overestimate Linux I would think Linux would be pretty good.

Most people tell me, free os, fast, compatible, drivers installed, no bugs. When I do use Linux the cd driver is broken, actually killed my video card by overclocking it. And it doesn't support exes.

Hence my reasons for liking Ubuntu. I got tired of compiling my own drivers. Though a handy skill to have I guess.

And that depends on which advantage your talking about. Just because MS had 95% of the market doesn't mean it's great. I use Windows for one thing only. Games. And I have a PS3 for that. Python is really more of a toy though you can compile python programs in C and C++. So if you wanted more people to use it you could.

And while Linux does work well as a server. It was meant to be a light weight version of Unix for the home PC. And to that end it does a well enough job. Though I think a little more powerful than needed for the average user.

People who use Linux have a keen of not getting used to thing, vice versa for another os. So if someone make a os that was faster than Linux but less filetypes, and more of another type then that's what's going with Linux and Windows, but that Linux came out first.

As far as dataphones. They already are on track to be the most used computers out there. Only makes sense. How many people you know have an I-Phone?

Most people don't program. Nor is an octal core 64bit processor backed with an 800Mhz FSB bus, 2 terabyte HD, 1gig DDR3 videocard and 16 gig of ram needed for average use. Another popular product has been Netbooks. That alone should prove my point on that.

Not knockin windows much. I'm also a fan of Mac OS's for their stability and ease of use. And I cut my teeth on DOS way back in the day.

I'm drifting more *nix these days as MS gets more cozy with the likes of DHS. On top of that Windows doesn't support the archaic things I run into from time to time.

As far as the exes. With as powerful as computers are today I don't notice much, if any, difference. And if speed really counts. Virtual Box OSE works just fine.

I have a p4 3ghz 1gb ram, a p4 2ghz 512mb ram, a dual core 3.2 ghz 4gb ram, and a Celeron 1.4ghz 768mb ram laptop, all running XP with a windows 7 mod pack and it replaces many system files with 7 files, makes XP 110% like 7, no hiccup (except viruses from watching mongolian midget porn) and best software/hardware compatibility. Still MS updated perfecty, loads way faster than the original XP config and with dual boot of Kubuntu, after 22 yrs I'm finally a happy PC camper!

Actually. Mac has been pretty innovative. The Apple Lisa could have kicked the pants off of a machine running Windows 3.1 and the Lisa was made about 15 years before that.

Besides. I really don't see much in the way of MS products on the most popular computers in the world. I.E. dataphones. Last time I checked Android and Palm WebOS are based off of Linux.

Windows is alright for what it is. But the world is changing. Much to the chagrin of Bill Gates.

Yea, Linux definitly has an amazing idea with the multiple work desktops. Plus you can mod the interface to easily manage even more windows.

I love XP. It is probably one of the best O/S's out there, and with a little tweeking, can look amazing.

BUT, I love Linux the most.  The most amazingly versitile, the cheapest, yet the ace of spades in everything from eye candy to affordability

Thats because your just an average joe home user. I usually have three workspaces going with at least 30 windows open, and probably 4 or 5 shells(terminals). I also require dual monitors for better productivity. When you work from your pc, you will understand. My firefox has 32 tabs open right now....3 workspaces(desktops) with 36 open windows.

for anyone interested in making it a cube, dont use the guy's program Yodm3d, because u get 4 faces. there is another program called deskspace which allows you to put things on the top and bottom. Also its a stand alone program so no need to install meaning you can take it to work/school giving you an opportunity to bunk off work. see anyone coming and use the shortcut key to swap to a less conspicuous face. Although I am now running Windows 7. When I used to run XP I used the Alienware Xenomorph theme, Stardock's Object dock and Stardock's Fences to create a very pleasant looking desktop enviroment. I also tried Cube Desktop at one time was alright but I found that it slowed me down a bit too much when gaming...
