I personally disagree environmental issues has any significant factor in choosing where to live. I have lived in Australia for 12 years but although Australia has probably the best environmental features in the world, they lack a lot of simple things such as their hard to find, terrible and expensive food (we eat 3 times a day), insane tax, rude people, amateur workers, very uneven roads, and a lot of other things. In these sense, Indonesia (I am Chinese), is much better than this country.
In a word, it is not a matter of money since I think the Chinese government has enough money (well, if they have money to buy massive US bonds and feed countless corrupt officials) but a matter of care. The focus of the Chinese government now is economic development. If one day, they take the environment issue seriously, they will find money for it and we will see the impacts of the change in their concern.

Aljazeera is the new CNN and BBC. I pointed out an earlier translation mistakes on an Aljazeera piece about gasoline price hike in China, now they are at it again. Oh and also, translation starting from 0:19 is not close to what the woman actually said. I don't understand why, because she's only using common speak...
I don't see anything ruthless in this video. What's really ruthless is how the Chinese government suppresses the freedom of the Tibetan people. New buildings and infrastructure constructed just for the Olympics can't hide the fact that the Chinese government has blood on its hands.
sure america has it's flaus. but so does every country. but america has less than other countries has a higher AVERAGE standard of living than most countries.

Well I hope the Chinese have fun because visitors dont seem to be interested. So far with ticket sales Beijing's Olympic efforts will have one of the lowest proportions of international visitors attending for a modern Olympic games.
The billboards, screens, logos and other trash represent a hedonist consumer fantasy. Don't watch them, don't watch the olympics, forget that industrial profit making show and live your life as it were without the Olympics. They are not worth your time.
I know, it figures from an American. You people actually celebrate the creation of the elite for you. Appreciating individual product is one thing, but being happy about tyranny is another thing.
The only tyranny I hear is coming from you, teemur, with your sanctimonious railing against "hedonist consumerism". You're no different from a religious fundie: They tyrannize people by preaching about the evils of sex or evolution; you tyrannize people by preaching on about the evils of consumerism.
So you're in a funny situation where you can't agree on anything with other people or yourself. Don't you think that's a bit unrealistic? 'don't force me to hear your critisism'. Relativists are impossible. Don't you think that communication is more productive than staying away from painful thoughts?
You did not stick just to criticism. You ordered people to not watch. I don't feel you can make me do that. And BTW: absolutists are the people who start wars, execute infidels, and carry out suicide attacks.
US has hosted 4 Olympics. This is the same government that exterminated Native Americans; enslaved millions to Africans; and dropped two Atom bomb on Japanese civilians. If those are the Olympic ideas, I guess the Chinese probably should never apply again.
Sure but what country is free from criticism? Whilst I am no fan of the USA I admit they have a system of democracy and liberty that ranks just below the established Western European democracies.
China TODAY is a sharp example of government gone wrong, very little freedom and personal liberty, intolerance of different cultures and religions, and absolutely undemocratic. Look at Tibet, the Uigher region and the Falun Gong - makes you wonder if the devil is running China.
I can't agree with you more. When the west dealing with China, double standards always applied. And those stupid people always there use the opportunities to blow the horn and more noises of bashing China baselessly and shamelessly not for the benefit of Chinese people or people around the world but for their political agenda.
the CCP fully supports that. its the human rights noobs that are trying to screw up world peace via the olympics. and no, im not part of the CCP, i HATE it.
every nation in the world pollutes, especially those that are developing. look at how much britain polluted when it was going through the industrial revolution. again, im not trying to support the CCP, but you can't fully blame them if every nation pollutes as well. just look at the US; they're screwing up the environment like hell
China is the worst polluting country. So I'm criticizing it. And the times are changing from the industrial revolution. At present days, environmental technology is developing rapidly. But China fails to adopt that.
actually, U.S. is still the number one polluter in the world, and rank #1 in emission of CO2, China of course is catching up. You can blame all the problems on China, but you know, given your name of "ihateChina", I suppose you are just one those haters who is biased in viewing China as a whole.
It does suck a lot that they wouldn't agree to cut emissions in the near future. Together with India, in ten years they may be producing more than the rest of the world together. Gonna be hell on the climate. More hurricanes, a lot of land lost. Probably a lot of their babies will be born deformed because of the pollution. Real selfish of them. And their excuse is that they have a lot of people. Guess which government asked the Chinese to have a lot of babies in the 1970s? Pssh.
lol, actually "benefit" is a much more suitable term for what China and India are doing. How selfish of them? of course they are selfish, but then again, the western countries are just as selfish. I am pretty sure U.S. invaded Iraq for the benefits of controlling oil, Britian is not far from behind.
China has a lot of people, you either deal with it or u don't. There is the one-child policy limiting the population. Then again, you can argue that's against their human rights.
Well why would India and China, both developing countries agree to cut emission when non of the G8 members,(all developed rich countries) would? Which countries are the really selfish?
The G8 countries did agree to cut emissions. The UK has cut emissions 15%, for example, Japan has agreed to cut them by 50% relative to 2008 by 2005. The g8 countries which didn't agree were India and China. That's the point. They are the selfish ones.
You are right, they are the selfish ones, but they also have two largest population in the world. When half of their people are starving and have no place to live, do you really think they are gonna care about the environment as much as the people in developed nations do?
Because many Chinese citizens are starving, Beijng shouldn't host the Olympics. They should use their money to improve living for ordinary Chinese first. In the meantime, China should have enough money for pollution control if it has money for hosting the Olympics. China has spend over 280 billion dollars on the Olympics. If 10% of this amount is invested in air pollution control in Beijing, it will give Beijing a much better look.
I agree with you, the money would have been better off to improve the lives of many in China, but I believe the 280 million (not billion) spent was a long term goal to lift the tourism industrial for China. It sort of is like investing in a commercial to advertise, and eventually let's hope that the money can all be worth it.
I know they invested a lot in many important infrastructures. However, if they don't improve the environment, not many foreigners will want to go to the city. Also, the investment only benefits Beijing and perhaps one or two surrounding cities, say, Tian Jin. We should not expect too much from it for the whole nation, as pointed out by President Hu Jintao.
Hey don't you realize that India and China aren't part of the G8(group of industrialized RICH countries) so they aren't obliged to limit their emissions?
You can say China is the worst, but it is not. The truth is the truth, America is still the #1 polluter in the world since there are so many people driving cars. The action by the Chinese government trying to reduce pollution has just began to take into effect, give them some time, China is still a developing country.
The pollution what I said is not emission of CO2, but emission of nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, VOCs and other substances health-damaging. My concern is these pollutants can injure athletes' and audiences' health in the Olympic games. CO2 itself isn't toxic though it is the greenhouse gas. China is still a developing country, so it should not host the Olympics.
The IOC has just trusted Chinese government in living up to their promises made at the bidding 7 (or 8) years ago. They granted the Olympics to China upon their promise of pollution clean-up and other promises. However, Beijing didn't start to take the pollution thing seriously till this year. What can the IOC do? When they realize the severity of the issue, it has been too late to do anything. But I believe they won't trust Chinese government the same way next time.
Let me tell you something, China could not have lived up to any promises made 7 years ago when they were selected. IOC should have understood this, but because of their greed, they chose China as the host anyways. The next time, lol, I believe, would do it again.
The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency disagrees, with their 2006 study, which stated China had 8% higher emissions than the USA, when in 2005 they had 2% lower emissions. Regardless, it's very close cut. They should have begun earlier, since other nations began to try to limit emissions in 1990, 18 years ago.
Other countries started to develop their economy 100 years ago during the Industrial Revolution, so maybe they should have limited their emissions 100 years ago as well? China started in the late 70s, and I think by the time when they realize the CO2 emissions was a huge deal, people have already started to put the blame on China, but rather is the whole entire world that contributed the cost.
However, nobody should make things worse when they are already bad. Both developed and developing countries need to care for the environment. China and India starting industrialization later than developed countries serves no excuse for their heavy pollution. Since we've learned a lesson from the bad experience with the environment that developed countries have been through, we cannot repeat what they did before, i.e. polluting the environment first and fixing it later.
Of course, there should be no excuses for what the developing countries are currently doing, but you cannot expect them to do so the same way the developed countries are doing, and that is to cut the emissions by half every year to the year of 2050. Better compromises are needed.
Agreed. But I guess China and India has been doing much less than what they are supposed to do as a developing country...You can tell this from the heavy pollutions in China and India. I used to study Environmental Sciences and got to know that Environmental Bureau is one of poorest government units in China. I used to work as an intern at Sichuan Environmental Bureau and could feel how limited money and staff they have.
YOu are BS again! It is the foreign companies went to China building factories without setup pollution control. Chinese government realize the situation and is taking action seriously and setting up regulations for pollution control. Sometimes, it is not the central government to blame. It is the local government corruption and capitialist greedy people are the ones to blame. Don't blame them, blame us.They are becoming like us,
Capitalist. They call the People's Republic of Capitalist.
The base is 'The world's worst polluted places' of the Blacksmith. It says that two of the ten worst polluted places in the world are in China. I know that the Chinese government realize and try to control the pollution. But the action doesn't go well.
The Chinese Government arrested the PANCHEN LAMA ( at the time 6 years old) and removed him and his parents to a secret location. This was in 1995 and still there is no word as to his where abouts. Now is the time to come CLEAN China. WHERE IS THE YOUNG MAN AND HIS PARENTS?
Don't worry. If they can breath in the US, they can do the same in Beijing. Trust me, the air condition there is not worse than LA or as bad as what the media claim. They always dramatizing the news to make more attention. Too bad, most people who make negative comments about China are based on the outdated information, sometimes it is decade old information.
To segagman: you said: 'FREE TIBET'. Is that all you can say? What has the Olympics to do with your 'Free Tibet' agenda? Do let the whole world suffer for your pointless claim. Free from what? Does any country in the world recognizes that Tibet is independent country? Work with UN before interruptting the Beijing Olympics.
America is looking for Investors for the Southern U.S. Borders, such as farmers, real estate developers, manufacturing companies, city and town developers, hoteliers, etc. There is a high Mexican labor force that is under utilized.

If that is the case, then that's the problem with the IOC and Chinese people are doomed to suffer in their life, which is sad...

XuanXuan79 3 years ago

Free the Panchen Lama. The youngest political prisoner in history. Free him now.

The Chinese Government arrested the PANCHEN LAMA ( at the time 6 years old) and removed him and his parents to a secret location. This was in 1995 and still there is no word as to his where abouts. Now is the time to come CLEAN China. WHERE IS THE YOUNG MAN AND HIS PARENTS?

how are all those hard workin' athletes going to breathe? boy, picked a fine fkn place to compete....how, horrible.
ratonnewmex 3 years ago 3
