I just want to say that KAREN CARPENTER IS and always WILL BE the GREATEST female vocalist of all time. She will NEVER BE equaled and she will never be bested. KAREN is.............NOW and will always be an angel of Heaven.....................eternally singing.
I just feel privaledged..............to have been able to hear her sing on Earth.

This has to be the best live version of Superstar!! Her voice very deep, resonant, & full of emotion. I've noticed that most in most live versions of this song, her voice was higher, especially in later years. The recorded version (supposedly Karen's first time singing it, and, first take, per Coleman's book pg 105) is an untouchable masterpiece, Karen's best vocal, imo.
I've always wondered why Karen's voice changed so much post 1975 -(higher, softer). I've always said that the anorexia damaged her vocal abilities somewhat.
Actually Cynthia never woreTHIS yellow dress. This one was a gown that had pants on it, for drumming. The one in The Karen Carpenter Story, is the same one she wore for RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS (you tube one from the interpretations video)...and that was a gown with no pants...
I just wanted to comment that when the the movie " The Karen Carpenter Story" was being made the actress who played Karen, Cynthia Gibb actually wore the dress that Karen did during this concert....
karen and richard,..a real great brother and sister team up. one of those personalities who made everyone believe in the life of music...how they were missed today and will be forever!!!!
The closing performance of Superstar was, as the Japanese would say, subarashi! As Paul Williams said, she sang with such complete conviction and sincerity. Both Budokan concerts were fantastic, and no wonder the Japanese loved Karen so.
The Carpenters had been performing since 1968 thru 1981, producing many hit singles and albums throughout their storied career. Karen tragically passed on in 1983, due to complications due of a relatively unknown disease at that time, anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder. Her legacy lives on in her voice and music to this very day. She is still dearly missed.
Don't you remember you told me you loved me? baby baby...
You said youd be coming back this way again baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby, I love you.... I really do
Que canción, temasa la de Williams y la interpretación impecable de Karen. Y habrán de creernos un día nuestros hijos que vivimos esta maravillosa época?
"Sometimes", for me, remains as the most emotionla Carpenters song. It's so sweet, so tender. Karen is so genuine and beautiful, a one of a kind person. I admire her so much. Thank you for this beautiful concert.
Thank you very much for posting this live concert. I had read how the Carpenters really valued international acclaim, and Karen indicates this in her remarks here. They've always been more popular in Japan than in the U.S., amazingly.
WOW! A live version of "Sometimes?" Gorgeous... thanks so much. What a great tune. The recording is killin' and people don't talk about this tune very much since there was so much other great stuff on that record.
Oh my god she is only 22, such poise, maturity. dosen't seem like a 22 year old could do that today, they are too sexed up now and just scream not sing. aren't there any singers out there today that could match up to karen? no way!!!
That is why they have to sex up nowdays to compensate for insufficient musical talent. I would not be suprised that one day they are going to f*ck on stage rather than singing to attract audience. Gone are the golden days.
Abolutely the best live clip of Superstar I've seen -- all the other times I've seen live clips of this she has a bit of trouble with "...and I can hardly wait...", but here she nails it... I totally agree with DartagnonJones - such passion, and such a pleasure to see all 6 of these clips --- many thanks Neroli! Our only hope is that Richard sees the wisdom in remastering these for DVD!
oh dear lord, just look at her during the final chorus of 'superstar', now that is passion. That is a definitive artist, one of the greatest performers of all time!
Neroli, Thanks for posting this -- delightful to see the more youthful Karen singing so beautifully in their earlier Japan concert. Another cultural treasure, keeping her legacy alive.
Beautiful performance of Superstar.

Karen should have played the drums more often, she considered herself a musician, not an entertainer. And she was very accomplished.
