@Vickievitz what what what what ???? man, see the world record video again. popov get the record with a shorter suit than cielo. it was like an "underpant". the 2000 suits or the 90,s suits were "wet paper" comparing with these 2010 and 2011 new suits. i,m doing 53:85 with 35 years old and till 2008 my best time was 54,77.. till 2008 the WR of record were imposible to beat. now only 3 years later everybody is around or less than 21:64. you will see it the next saturday in the 50 meters final...
@Vickievitz But with the ARENA POWER SKIN SUIT. the 2010 and2011 new suits are not plastic suits but are incredible suits. take a look at magnussen yesterday : 47:49 in 100 free style , take a look at the 200 final today : 4 swimmers in 1:44, take a look at the 100 breat semis yesterday : 1:04:9, take a look at the 4x100 free style relay : 3:11:0...in 2007 this times were just imposible...what what to say with the suits in 2000 ???? LOL
I've always wondered what they call Popov in Russian. We dubbed him the Russian Rocket but that would sound so redundant if you were already in Russia.
@Deadlycolli in sidney he was the only one swimmer of the finals without the Speedo fast skin suit . all the others swimmers had that new suit so popov couldnt win. one month before in the european champs he won gold medal in 50 and 100 meters free style beating peter van de hoogenbanand the others without any problem. only tecnology could beat popov...
@iyours cesar cielo beats popov just with the suit "power skin" of Arena. with the same suit cielo makes a worst time. popov was 7 years without losing 1 race in 50 and 100 free style (1991-1998) . that,s simply impossible for cielo or any swimmer. till 2008 noboby could make 21:64 even cielo. just the plastics suits of 2008 and 2009 and the new speedo 2010 lzr racer elite, or power skin of arena of 2010 could beat popov
@macdicas Perhaps those 0.09? And what about those two empty lanes for Popov? It's a matter of time anyway... Cielo is only 23 and he's getting better everyday.
@feheva a jammer DOES help much more than u might think, personally I think Cielo has already reached his peak performance and I think that Bousquet can actually come to be faster than him although it will take a lot of hard work, but he is undoubtedly extremely fast in the water.
short course yads, compared to long course meters is like 3 seconds, these olympians could go in the 17's in short course yards as they would come out of their kick at the opposite flag off the dive and then in the middle of their turn
Omg you think that's amazing? Popov have achieved much much greater things in his life then just some world records in the same year. But ye Cielo is the one that dominates today.
popov the best i agree with you he was a beast lpopov forever just wearing a fucking speedo fucking unbeatable! im brazilian and cielo is the best now but nobody will be like the great russian

I agree that Popov wasnt that good. Surely the suits would have made a difference. But not that much. Even with 8-9 yrs in training, he wouldn't be able to surpass the swimmers we have now because the technique back then wasnt as good as the techniques nowadays. Beside, he would've gotten old.
What is the new technique? Straight arm? Klim was doing that, and he wasn't better than Popov in 50 free.
One thing is different today, shorter swimmers are doing really well. Dude, 5'9 10-20 years ago would have mean't forget an Olympic shot in the freestyle.
naw. straight arm isnt the shit yet. we dont kno what results it will bring YET by the best sprinters. im just sayin that the technique from back then mustve been a lil diff from what is now.
i agree with what you said right there. its true that 5'9 can have a shot at olympics. just gotta be strong. =D
Popov was the greatest sprinter ever. I bet that if his skills were applied today with the 'swimsuits', he would have broken the 21 second mark for 50 free. Popov forever from Australia!!!
343596 wow you are stubborn. Look with the newest suit Popov would have gone 20.xx easily. These new suits today do take 0.7 sec from the time. I bet you are not a swimmer. I am a swimmer and i have tested the new suits. And if we go to Bousquets (dunno how to spell it) we could say that he didn't go 20.94. He used a now illegal suit.
I would have guessed that in that race with no swimmer to his sides and a swim cap + the new suit, he would have gone 20.5x-20.6x.
How old are you? I've been swimming for 2 years so far and I now go 29 :) 38 is pretty good, if you tell me your technique I could give you some pointers!
But now i gotta say hes beaten for the first time acording to me... I don´t Popov is matching 20.94 with any suit.... If so the Suits are freaking unbeliveble..
0.7 is a lot. I don´t think a little Polythurania and a swimcap won´t make you go 0.7 faster.
before the swimmers use these new suits, the times were not so fast. I know the sport evolue, but before Beijing, in 50m freestyle, just Popov did less than 22s in a olympian race
No. Not 19.X. Hes not that good. Then Gary Hall and Anthony Ervin etc. would be in the 19-20 range.
Don´t forget that Popov swam with nobody in the lanes beside him. That would decrease resistance by more than any suit. With guys swimming beside him he mostly did 21.9 like Gary Hall (21.74 with a crappy legskin), Anthony Ervin, Matt Biondi, Tom Jager etc.
This race he suddenly dropped 3 tenths From being at a very consistant level..
Well, Popov swam with nobody in his sides just once. If he did more than this, probably he could better times. It's impossible improve his best just swimming once.
Ok, this time he hadn't noody in his sides, but he never shaved his body neither used a cap over his hair.
No beacuse then Biondi, Jager probably Gary Hall and also probably Anthony Ervin would be at a 20.XX level too.. You want Popov to be the best but lets face it swimming as a sport is a bit behind for example track and field for example when it comes to how you should train..... People have and will pass Popovs level of exellence.
He maybe was the most talanted swimmer ever but he isn´t the best because the training was very much old school back then.. Even tho it was just 8 years ago
Your one of those old school guy who thinks aerobic training is very important for the 50m... That´s why u don´t realise how much better these guys of today are... Not to mention the technique sucked by then
@RSGuides577 i think being old school and doing well is only admirable in the presence of others who are not. everyone is this video is old school, but someone had to win
@Manus127 OMG...man.... I bet ... he could beat anyone(Cielo....Bernard....Thorpe..or even Phelps) but...this is a new generation.... we cant compare.... Popov´s records were only beaten using these new suits and technologies.....believe me.... even the water now.... is diff from back then
doping isnt sinonimous of size, in sport doping goes further beyond of taking steroids like would some weightlifter there are subtances that increases the level of oxigen in the blood and allow a better burst of energy when you're in a race
well the LZR claims that it takes .5 seconds per 50 from the FS2. I don't remember how much the FS2 dropped from skin. But it's probably safe to say the full body suit is capable of dropping close to .7 if the companies are correct in their claims. So if this is all true (i kinda doubt it though i did drop half a second going from FS2 to a blueseventy) then he is looking at a 20.9-21.0 area

26.74 isn't a hard time to get, a good 4-5 months can get you that time.

I really think Bernard is doping. Eamon is too small to be doping. Dude is tiny for a sprinter.

doping isnt sinonimous of size, in sport doping goes further beyond of taking steroids like would some weightlifter there are subtances that increases the level of oxigen in the blood and allow a better burst of energy when you're in a race

not bad, 21:64 with a speedo and no swim cap, wonder how much time he would drop if he had the supersuit and a swim cap on

I'll say 21.1. In my opinion there is no way Sullivan, Bernard, Bousquet, Weber-Gale, etc. could touch Popov on equal terms.

And with modern strength and sprint training.

well the LZR claims that it takes .5 seconds per 50 from the FS2.
