The real issue about the CIA and NSA is how they have done so many terrible things in foreign nations causing a backlash against America and it's citizens. Why is it that many of the the people in history we find to be terrorists, out secret government trained and supplied them. If one manufactures terrorists, what would you call the organization that manufactures terrorists through the last 50 years?
It's time to come clean with the budget of the secret government and put them on a leash!

Between 1808 and 1860, the West Africa Squadron a branch of the British government seized approximately 1,600 slave ships and freed 150,000 Africans. Action was also taken against African leaders who refused to agree to British treaties to outlaw the trade, for example against "the usurping King of Lagos", deposed in 1851. Anti-slavery treaties were signed with over 50 African rulers.
your hatred will cease when you have been fully educated.
systematic exploitation of labor can be traced back to the earliest records, such as the Code of Hammurabi (ca. 1760 BC- Middle East Laws), which refers to it as an established institution.
Some of the opinions that I see in these comments are ridiculous!
Now, I'm definitely in the camp that believes that we should have never gone into Iraq in the first place.
Still, with the situation being what I remember it to be in 2006, before the surge, I can't fathom to think how people could actually believe that and immediate pullout would be the best option.
How many more countless people would've die, with an "energized" terrorist militia and a de-stabilized central government?
You pull out in 2006 and, in my opinion, you'd probably see a full-on civil war, with both adversaries armed to the teeth, and a population of near 30 million people in harm's way.
The anti-war movement can rally against Bush as much as they want about the Iraq War, which I still feel was an awful decision to begin with.
I just don't see how any of them can sleep well at night, while they wanted to, in essence, leave the Iraqi's "with an empty bucket and their house burning down".
But it was not the "surge" that stabilized the situation, it was the Sunni awakening which was already happening, and the US paying off militia groups with money and more guns. We are even arming groups that we previously said were linked to bin Ladan. Again the US is arming the people who wish to cause harm, just like when the US sponsored the terrorists and warlords in Afganistan to undermine the legitamate socialist Govt. Wait for the Blowback.
I agree, the Sunni awakening probably did have a major role, in the stabilization of Iraq, giving us a situation where we'll be able to leave a stable Iraq, in 2009-2010. There's really not much to argue there.
My point is that, even with the awakening happening, without the troop support of the surge, stabilization would not have happened, and we'd probably be seeing a full on civil war, with both sides armed to the teeth, and us looking to Iran to step in and quell the situation.
And to the whole soviet Afghanistan point, the US was in a "war" with the Soviets, and sought to undermine them at every opportunity, and the Soviets were keen to do the same.
In hindsight, was it the best idea to support the religious-fundamentalist Taliban? Not really.
Blowback is coming, no matter what, since we've opened this can of worms.
As crazy and "evil" as Saddam was, at least Iraq was stable, secular, and an effective buffer between Iran and the rest of the Middle East.
I think we basically agree here, although I tend to think we might have accomplished our objectives with out the surge. Also perhaps we didn't really stop the Civil war but just delayed it, and gave the sides more arms in the process. I suppose there are no good answers anymore. We've woven so many webs over the years its not surprising that the whole area is a tangle. Thank You.
this is the kind of stuff that I like from Real News. Real News ought to stick with just foreign policy analysis because they don't know anything about economics neither do their guest analysts.
keynsian economics is a failure. I may not know as much but the austrians and free market economist know a lot more. I wouldn't touch the economy because I believe in economic freedom where the govt doesn't steal money from people.
Socialism is a workers democracy on the road to communism. Shanklinmike is a typical rightist trying to distort the truth. His position is the real hypocrisy; it can only result in an oligarchy worse than now. A totally deregulated capitalist world. Welcome to Social-Darwinism at its finest. The rich and fortunate will form kingdoms and the rest will starve or do their bidding.
So agreed, I've had run-ins with him before. Libertarians are the worst sort of rightist, they hide their fascism with talk of "freedom" and "Markets". But what they offer is a market on freedom, ann that's not freedom.
His Libertarian crap would make this much worse. Having no, or minimal state, while leaving capitalist accumulation and the means of production in private hands would result in a greater concentration of wealth and an elite more powerful than even now. Meanwhile all the regulatory agencies would disappear. It is a corporate wet dream.
Allah is the greatest, and Islam is the light and the solution to all of the world's problems. Islam will give you the strength to withstand the new world order's war on humanity and their laughable and delusional attempt to wage war upon God Himself... the NISA estimate has stated that most likely the Islamic caliphate will have been restablished by 2020... make sure you're on the right side by that time
I got a question how does libertarian-socialism differ from libertarianism? Socialism by definition is government monopoly on productive resources and libertarianism requires a lack of coercive force. I fully understand libertarian ideals but what is libertarian-SOCIALISM? Isn't that like saying Capitalism-Communism? Socialism requires force, libertarianism is the lack of force. To me its like anarcho-syndicalism with unions, its hypocritical to me! Any help would be great!
Thats a lie. Carter was working for the NWO & the CFR and was in bed with the central bankers.
Obama supporters can expect HUGE shocks coming from him.
Robert Gates was the prime engineer in the forming of Al Qaeda for the CIA. Now, with Obama, he'll be in charge of the Pentagon.
This is all coming from the British. The queen is flexing her muscle by shutting down the Canadian government. Britain & the US quietly has made a nuclear deal with India
Maybe Obama's keeping Gates on so that when Obama announces we're going to maintain a huge presence in Iraq, Obama can blame it on the last administration
Of course Obama agrees the surge worked. He doesn't want to embarrass bush. Same reason he wont pursue war crimes prosecution on people who have CLEARLY committed war crimes. The people responsible for getting him in power dont want him to. No, not the voters. John McCain was a joke candidate. you really think McCain was the best candidate the republicans could put up, out of those thirteen? Everyone wanted Ron Paul, but the votes were manipulated to bring up McCain. Obama was supposed to win.
Chameleons, flatterers, yes-men, brown-nosers, all the same thing. Machiavelli talked about them centuries ago and emphasized what parasites they are. Bad leaders such as Bush are slaves to them and Obama looks to be on track to the same fate. Never trust anyone who always tells you what you want to hear.
That's the biggest problem with our elections and being forced to choose between the "lesser of evils". IMO, that clearly describes every election since I've been alive - I'm 27.
Aanthanur- good comment- for example State (or Nationalized) TV in Venezuela, where it used to be that private, anti-government media had a monopoly on TV. Thats less true now. I wouldnt say its the best system. I would prefer to see all sides being objective. But what you have instead is state TV, which is pro-government, and then you have private media, which is much larger than state media, which is against the government. Between the two you can get both sides of the story.
there is also public access. Democratically funded by the people. If you don't like one public access station, then you don't contribute, but it is all voluntary. Once you "federalize" or nationalize something, everyone has to pay whether they like it or agree with it or not. Not to mention that all competition is driven out of that field because there is only one provider.
the problem is not the free market, it is corporate stranglehold over the market and over democracy. The news should be locally funded by those who care about the news. not some bureaucrat in an office in washington who has no idea what is happening in your part of the world. It should be public access, not federally regulated. That is the nazi state = facism. Mussolini said that facism was the perfect blending of corporate power and state power. IE: what we have now in the US
US government no! US people yes! but help must come from your neck of the woods. US is often regarded as the land of the free home of the brave. I don't see government in that phrase at all. like it or not the US is the worlds last hope for true government of and by the people. lead and the world will follow!
then you have facism. In our case, we have a transition period where we have the military industrial complex, the health care industrial complex/lobby, the financial industrial complex, and they are all able to throw their money into politics and sway decision makers. Even if the government federalized certain "markets", they would still simply hand the job to the highest bidding company. Who else? You'd have rupert murdoch running the national news, and the head of CDC running medicine...no tnx
benji- Mexico is a fascist state right next door to the US and doesnt seem to mind- also try to understand that nationalizing just means that instead of say Ted Turner owning FOX news, you would, along with your 200 million neighbors. I don;t see whats wrong with that because its not like there is a limit to how many channels you can have or anything.
as it is the Pentagon has been caught paying retired officers to appear on the news as " experts " while they promote the government agenda, could you really trust this government to run anything ?
my concern, since we have a state and corporate merger in our politics, is that when we "nationalize" a market, all that the govt will do is contract the job of managing that market out to the highest bidder, not give it to all americans. Then we'd have a govt backed ted turner running all the channels the way he sees fit. I see you have much more foolish fools to debate than me right now...peace
ben- VERY GOOD point! totally on target- but i still wouldn't abandon the idea entirely because i feel that with proper legal safeguards and other VERY intense restrictions placed at the ground level, Conservative (not liberal) nationalizing or socializing, at least short term, should be on the table. VERY cautiously do i even mention the above things. peace man
a better plan, if these are prerequisite, and you feel that everyone needs to pay for it, would be to make them local, not national. In earlier days of our republic, our localities (up to the state level) handled these things. this is better because those in charge would actually be a member of the community affected by the services. At the federal level, there is no incentive built in to make employees honest, efficient, and there is no demand for innovation (competition at least betweenstates)
Noam Chomsky! You're a GOD among men! I'm not worthy of your knowledge of politics, ethics and linguistics. I incline myself in front of your intellectual superiority. :D

ben- VERY GOOD point! totally on target- but i still wouldn't abandon the idea entirely because i feel that with proper legal safeguards and other VERY intense restrictions placed at the ground level, Conservative (not liberal) nationalizing or socializing, at least short term, should be on the table. VERY cautiously do i even mention the above things. peace man

that would only ever work if the government was genuinely for the people by the people. I wonder if that has ever been the case?

Something is very wrong - the human heart condition. We are all too self interested.

a better plan, if these are prerequisite, and you feel that everyone needs to pay for it, would be to make them local, not national.
