What I love most about Joe is he plays with so much attention to the melody and song. He's one of the few drummers I love to hear solo bcuz his solos have relevance to the music he's playing. So many drum solos I find are a frivolous exhibition of cliches. I hear him referencing the melody whether he is stating it or just implying it. Joe is always playing music in a truly artful way.He will always be one of my faves. Will always miss him. Learned so much from his instructional youtube vids.
Joe Morello,s playing, his technical skills are superb. His kit is properly tuned, you can hear the tom toms!A lot of drummers tom toms sound like wet cardboard. Drums are made to "ring",and not to dampen with dusters/ felt.Greatest drummer, Buddy Rich.
@Easleytee ... i love mel ...especially his touch on ride cymbal ...but Joe`s over all technique and complete mastery of rhythmic subdivisions is on its own level .. especially for that era ..he was really pushing the bounderies of time keeping , technique , odd times , and artificial note groupings
I'm a drummer, I do play rock and metal, but I love jazz drum, and it show me it's really make me enjoy and get me an advantage to play various style in drums. R.I.P Joe... thanks for your talent that U show the world that, this is how drummer sings
The original LP was entitled "It's About Time" [RCA LPM-2486]. The tracks from the original LP and other unreleased tracks were later issued as a CD entitled "Joe Morello" on RCA Bluebird 9784-2 RB].
I HAVE that book at :30! It's excellent! Joe was about the first drummer I ever learned about from my dad always playing Brubeck on his Zenith console record player. I listened to "Watusi Drums" over and over. Gotta love Joe Morello!
I heard Joe live in 1968 when I was 16. I couldn't believe it! I hadn't the faintest glimmering of an idea that the drums could be played at such a transcendent level. Listen to Joe's fours with Phil Woods and Gary Burton at the 2:40 mark. Joe's break at the 2:56 mark is one of the most creative things I've heard. So great!
I heard a story that when Joe didn't get a concept and asked the guy how he did it the person would show him and Joe could immediately play it back but twice as fast. He unintentionally pissed off a few people.
I've heard rumours now and then that Joe is a great drummer but can't swing.....anyone care to sit in after hearing this?.......no matter what anyone does on a Drum.....Joe will kindly show you how it's really done!
He's definitely first class on the instrument. We are lucky to have You Tube video to hear and witness his work. He's an inspiration to anyone who knows and cares about drumming.

Rock and Roll did create a brain dead society, I would never give this type of music a chance, now at 40 this stuff is the best. Delightful.
