  • 330 fucking volts for only shoot it about 2 cm????

  • "do not try this at home"...I'm going to try this! :D

  • @VinnieDain424 No, a disposable cameras flash uses high tension DC current which is completely different to mains power.

  • you said for kinetic energy ke=1/2xmassx*voltage*^2 obviously a typo, but you said voltage instead of velocity :P

  • i think the capacitor is more dangerous than the metalbolt!

  • Careful! You might kill someone with this monstrosity!

  • coil gun frankenstein!!!

  • You would get a lot more power from a rubber band. The rubber band also would require any wires, it wouldn't require charging up a capasitor and it's safe to use.

You can still end the rubberband video with a lot of calculations and math if you want to be scientific about it, just stick to doing something simple instead of over complicating things unless you are ready to impress.

  • dont forget eddy losses and stray flux!

  • thsoo bathically whhat whhere hhhoing to do isssthh...

  • @Meokins wut?

  • Ive been shocked but a camera capacitor... so very not fun.

  • that was epic fire range way farther than most. but still it worked and thats all that matters

  • 3:08 Suckback effect's a bitch right?

  • epic fire range :)

  • haha yess xD

  • wait isnt this a coil gun

  • Gauss gun and coiul gin are basicly the same.

  • OK, so would it be possible to up the scale of this experiment, to create something a bit more powerful? ie. a larger capacitor, a larger PS, a larger projectile, and a larger piston?

Either way, I'm gonna fav. this, and revisit this thing.

  • sandstorm

  • isnt it sandstorm? and this was a little anti climactic, didnt really accomplish anything watching this

  • whats the song at the end?

  • 3) This means you have to calculate the left over potential energy in the capacitor and take it into account.

On the plus side, this means your gun is more efficient than you thought.

An efficient coilgun might get 1-3% efficiency, so don't be surprised if efficiency looks bad. This is due to poor flux coupling and friction and resistive losses have much less to do with it.

    Good luck with version 2!

  • You want to have the capacitance and coil resistance adjusted to give a short time constant so that the majority of the capacitor's energy is dumped into the coil before the coil is shut off.

    Three other big miscalculations:

    1) The capacitor can handle 330V, but is almost certainly charged to less (maybe 300V or so).

    2) The leads that go to the flash sometimes come from a transformer, so the voltage is actually higher.

    3) The capacitor still has a charge after a shot.

  • I could go on a rant about most of the claims in this video, but I'll try to keep it constructive. The biggest problem is your calculations.

Your biggest loss was that you fired the coil incorrectly. A coil wants to suck metal into it, which means that as the metal piece is being pulled into the coil, you need to shut off power to the coil as soon as the projectile reaches the center. You can see in the video that the projectile was pulled in and bounced back out of the same side.

  • Reactance formulas:

    pi = 3.1415

    F = Frequency

    C = Capacitance Val

    L = Inductor Val

    Xc = 1 / ( 2 pi F C )

    XL = 2 pi F L

*Use 1 for the frequency in the formula to get the Xc or XL value. Reactance is measured in Ohms. when the Reactance is Xc = XL then the capacitor and Inductor values are the perfect combination.

  • I will tell you this straight up. When the Capacitor and the inductor are connected together to discharge what you have is called a RC Tank Circuit. to get max power or max Joules out of the circuit you much calculate the Reactance of each cap and coil and to find the right kind of values that area at resonance with each other.

  • woh easy there "sammy scientist"

  • 330 volts, lol... i'v been hit with 15,000, ya it hurts. but now anything less doesn't bother me. Thats what you get for inventing the game tazer wars...

  • not the best i have seen...but well done. if you want a semi shock that isn't really a shock, charge the capacitor and take the abttery out. touch the battery ends on the camera where the battery would be and your hand will feel parylised, you can actually feel it going through you and it does not hurt - it just feels scary. i wouldn't recomend it if you don't want a big shock by mistake - cameras are different, but i shocked myself like 10 times and i'm fine, no burns.

  • 2 weeks later suupertramp died of eletro burns within in his body, they claim his body was cooking alive from the inside out. this has no relation to when he shocked himself with batteries repetitively... none what so ever.

  • lol, im still here, no death. its totally saf----

  • oooh really? you can touch the bat leads and get a shock i didn't know that!

  • well i did, that doesnt mean you will!

  • dude gauss is magnetic enegy in a different form that might cuase cancer that aint no gaussian

  • now... to scale it up a bit... mweheheheh!

Thanks for the demo, you know your stuff!

  • Learn proper English.

  • why should he??

  • what a gr8 joke (:

  • Use a better coil...

  • 3.33 the video get to technique

  • Actually a gauss gun and a rail gun function on completely different principals. Gauss guns use capacitors and pull the bullet along while rail guns use homomagnetic polarization to propel the projectile.

  • u cant call this a coilgun.... just tooo smal, u need more power, say like 1k times more power

  • just for the record, i know coils, i'm into the speaker repair business, i make my own voice coils, from a quarter of an inch, to six inches, hand made, i even invented a voice coil winding machine, but i preffer doing it by hand, like when i was 12 years old...

  • go to any electronic supply store and ask for a damn coil, you'll end up not with a solenoid, they'll ask you what kind of coil, a voice coil, a low frecuency crossover passive coil...you: "no, i want that one over there" clerk: "well that's not a coil, that's a solenoid, it has a coil inside, but it's called a solenoid"

  • Leadfoot72 its a coil of copperwire..solenoid ... coil... its the same fuckin difference dick.. Cute Coil Gun.. lol scare some fleas

  • ...THAT'S NOT A COIL, IT'S A SOLENOID.

  • Comment removed

  • leadfootT072 stop being a smart ass

  • 1 star for your anti-climactic video.

    Fail.

  • my airsoft does 140 m/s

    :P

  • YOU WISH!!!! velocity 30m/s with 1 capacitor??

    coilguns are around 0.6% efficient.

  • Two errors:

    1) is 1/2 x Mass x velocity^2

    2) a part of the energy stored in the capacitor is dissipated in the circuit then you can't say the kinetic energy of the projectile is the total energy of the capacitor

  • Hmmm...

  • stupid that is not a guassian gun you need ball bearings and magnets to make a guassian gun. duhh just look in the related videos section.

  • How do you not kill the switch? I always killed the switch when playing with this kind of capacitor...

  • go to radioshack and look for a high voltage switch i got one for like a buck that can withstand my 1300volt coil gun :)

  • you'll shoot your eye out

  • shaw would be proud!

  • one last comment. i dont want you or anyone else to take offense to any of my comments as they were not intended for that purpose. i was merely trying to point out the flaws so that you may improve on the coilgun.i admit i may have gone overboard with some of the things such as saying that that was the worst coilgun i have ever seen, and i apologize.

  • OH MY GOD!! that is the worst coilgun i have seen on youtube. i know its that bad because i made a coilcun

    1. you did not take the circuit off the camera body.

    2. you did not unsolder the flash i presume, since it was still on the circuit.

    3. this was your worst mistake. YOUR COILS HAVE SUCKBACK!!! that is what happens when the projectile when the coils pull it forward but then pull it back. that is why your projectile barely went anywhere.

i will be more than happy to answere questions

  • how do you avoid suck back??? I thort the magnetic field went all the way up the coil in the same direction. does suck back only occur on magnetised tragectiles?

  • to avoid suckback just set the projectile further back in the coils. there is a point of maximum efficiency as i call it. it is the point where the porjectile should be set to achieve max efficiency from the coils. i find this point by repeatedly firing the coilgun and setting the projectile at different places. at the point of maximum efficiency there is no suckback and the projectile will go at the maximum speed that the particular coilgun is capable of shooting it at.

  • this will of course not eliminate problems such as poor induction in the coils or power loss at the soldering points

  • that's not the capacitor sound !!!! It's the sound of the lil' STEP-UP transformer of the circuit...the one who pulse you'r lil' 1.5 volts 600 mA to 330 V and an undefined current(need some data to find that out..)

    btw..good job ;-)

  • "Right now its cold and safe"

    As oppose to being dangerous?

    Ha..

  • i wonder if coils from a portable generator would be sufficiant for a more powerful version...

  • nice bro...thanks for the vid!

  • that was gay for all the work you have to do and the money you spend buying these things

  • why don't you just make a tazer out of your camera?

  • Very cool and good job recreating a low power gauss gun :)

  • SPECTORMAX! Get down here right this instant! Your dinners getting cold. You're not looking at girl pictures on your computer are you? SPECTORMAX! Are you listening to me? SPECTORMAX!

  • I meant the projectile . .

  • you didnt get a perfect coupling between the magnetic field and the coil, the energy went into making a magnetic field, most of which didnt move the coil, good job, but i wonder how the charge pump works?

  • looks as if he disassembled a disposable camera.

  • wow ale ma wywalony zasięg

  • he needs better coils, they should be close and something like 20-22 guage wire.

  • wow that looks like it will be fun

  • pretty cool stuff man.

  • would make a sweet grade 12 physics lab....seems to be were the phyiscs comes from at least

  • I really did understand all of that at the end - Im not kidding! :(

  • that was fucking retarded

  • what is the title of the song?

    1.-

    2.-

  • whats this song???

    1.-

    2.-

  • Sandstorm by Darude

    -Qes

  • isnt this the whole theory on the mac gun on halo 2? using electro-magnets and shit like that?

  • Yes, essentially.

  • i have seen enlargened gaussian guns with HUGE coils...this can be very deadly..i wouldn't advice going a makeing one...but if u really really want one that couldn't fire large metal rods you could this can be very DEADLY i have photographical prove on a someone killing a deer with a gassian gun useing a bar of steel...brutal yes...fun yes...ONCE again i don't advice going and makeing one

  • there is a navy test of a rail gun some where on here. It send a projectile through 12" of hardened steel.

  • how about a 1 farad capacitor and a 24 volt marine batteries with a starter coil from a car and a piece of steel rebar?

I got all of it think it would work?

  • No, the discharge time would be too long. It would just shudder and maybe melt the coil.

  • I used a bigger coil and a 1/4" steel rod. worked alright the coil sustains some damage every firing and needs to be compressed. I chronographed it at 250 fps.

  • You will get a better result with a thinner wire with loads of winds and using a high voltage than a high-amp low voltage coil.

With the way you're doing it, you're switching very high curents. If you use a high voltage instead you are switching a lower current but also your coil has more potential. With energy in capacitors, a higher voltage is better than higher capacity when you want raw power.

  • If you check out my videos, you'll see i'm always using >240 volts. I charge the capacitors in parallel and discharge them in series. I get a much better result.

  • I got shocked by a camera capacitor once :( hurt like hell.. all the way up my arm.. when I was like 8 lol

  • put more similar capacitors in parallel, make a custom coil and try firing a more ferous projectile like a nail with it's head cut off....that's gonna get painfull ;)

  • I really like how you included the calculations at the end. That is the thing that most annoys me about hack videos, unsupported claims.

Also daisy chain a bunch of charging circuits together for a bigger bang.

  • very clever idea.

  • You know your shit mate!

  • Woo. You rock. Best wishes!

  • be careful with that thing, very dangerous projectile firing thing. You might shoot a hole in your carpet.

  • Hey I like the idea of using a one-use camera's capacitor!

  • Yes, 330 volts would hurt. I got zapped by a one-use camera I was tinkering with and it hurt [not to mention scared me shitless].

  • haha sandstorm awesome, gj just tell them to discharge the capacitor first and not blow it up.

  • actually your 330 volts is wrong it can only charge up to 300 volts before it stops .

  • ur a fag its 330v

  • Physics is wrong and full of typos spektormax

  • wtf is with the bloody math at the end. Darn shaky too

  • hes a nerd lol i think, WTF IS A FRIGGIN CAPACITOR lol

  • y does everyone criticize wen ppl post vids n stuff?

  • jesus christ, im sorry everybody. hey Spektormax, good job with the gaussian gun. i know i wouldnt be able to do it so yea good job. you happy now everybody

  • Because they are complete twats hiding behind the anonymity of the internet, so ashamed of their own failing lives that they have to flame other people who are actually doing worthwhile shit, to feel better about themselves.

  • nerd lol wats a capacitor?

  • hes not a nerd hes just not a dumb ass

  • ya i made one and shoked myself.ooww!

  • what was that song! at the end

  • FSR FSR FSR I LOVE U DUDE

  • were you drunk when recording this?

  • OMFG WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT SHIT???? FUCKIN NERDS U JUST WASTED 4:35min OF MY LIFE!!!! IT SHOT LIKE 3 INCHES, BIG DEAL .oh and pardon my french

  • Man. He tried hard enough to do it. If you can do better then him, then try it shit face.

  • no i have better things to do and umm nobody said anything to you so yea fuck you. dont bother replying cuz im not about to get in an argument over youtube

  • hey it was ur choice to watch it

  • Des is so eine scheiße

    Kommt ja keinen meter!!!

    In English:

    That is so fuckin shit!

    The range is <2 meter!!!

    mfg

    The Handicapped Man

  • color me un-impressed. this is the kind of crap me and my friends were fooling around with in the 4th grade. right down there with powering motors just to watch them spin. Build your own circuit and wind your own coils, then you can act like you know something :P

  • FUCKING GREAT COUPLE INCHES WOW

  • i lost 4:35 mins just to c that?!

  • this was lame.... this thing doesnt have any power at all... Hey people does only the ammount of volts in a gauss gun needed or the amps is also need on high ?

kinda get more scary if there like 0.6 mili amps )) a stun gun )

  • OH MY GOD! it really moved. man u are a total dumbass... yeah u really are...

  • its GAUSS YA DUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!ga i hate it when people make a video and don't say things correctly, ok say it with me gauss, gauss, gauss got it now??!

  • MY god. He has discovered the solinoid! We are doomed!

  • lol, thats what i was thinking, but at least he has some interest in something other than TV.

  • you have 1.5 volts, not 330. I actually feel less smart from watching this shit

  • "fuckmeinthegoatass2" you my friend. are a moron. im afraid you were doomed to feel "less smart" from the start. the camera takes the 1.5v and ups it to 330v by charging the cap with a transformer.

  • I agree that the battery is 1.5V, but the switching power supply inside a camera can step up DC. It is like a car switches 12V into a large coil, and when the high battery current stops, the coil reacts with a low current/high voltage and breaks the air gap in a spark plug (thousands of volts to break air gap, all from a 12V source). Be careful with coils!

  • yeah. i took a disposable camera apart. and touch the charged circuit. i hurt. for hours, and i had 2 burn marks on my finger for like a month. DONT TOUCH THE CAPACITOR OR CAMERA CIRCUIT!! good job at the gun!

  • I cant stop laughing

  • GREAT

    MUY BIEN

  • you generally equate to the total sum of what it means to be a complete and utter dumbass. Blandly stated, a watermelon has more nueron density than you do. A) you know jack shit about electricity and electromagnetism, B) you know jack shit about being the man of the video and impressing people, C) you think you know more than you do

  • Now tell me what it means to be dumb: a) creating a working coilgun with household shit, or b) flaming someone on youtube that you obviously can't compete with ?

  • Definitely "a" because "b" simply isn't true. Logic over-rules ignorance. When a choice is presented to make a point, and one of the selections of the rhetorical question holds no merit or validity whatsoever, the point is rendered useless because there is no longer any choice to be made and your rhetorical question answers itself. I hate because I appreciate and I never flame for fame. Try to keep that in mind while you be' so unkind.

  • ....

  • Awesome stuff.

  • you need to use better diction

  • you need more power ;)
