  • Ive seen todd a couple times but at the old agora would have been great!!!!

  • Beautiful ballad that has stood the test of time as it sounds as good now as it did in the early 70s.

  • There's no one like Todd. Rock on, my brother.

  • a great live performance.....thanks for the share Gary.....straight to my favs...!!!

  • What a band , they don't make them like this anymore do they . Listen to vocals , great live performance

  • Another glaring example of somebody who deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...

  • i want my ole girlfriend back...

  • oh....shut up

  • My all time favorite Todd performance-

Once you've experienced Back to the Bars, you can never go back!

  • That is one magical looking, talented, driven and charismatic human - and one of my favorite songs of all time.

  • UNTOUCHABLE!!

  • i have to disagree-i loved john lennon and todd is right up there with him musically -they just wound up on different paths of success and notierity

  • And it's ironically sad: When this was made, in 1978, Todd's career was taking off, and Lennon had but one album left. Then, Utopia's "Deface the Music" came out in October1980, less than two months before Lennon was shot. Tragic run-in between two of music's more endearing and talented personalities.

  • His hair is fab!!!

  • Very Cool. What a writer, performer, producer, arranger, singer. The total package. One of the few.

  • ill be posting my cover of this soon.

  • Todd is GODD!

  • There was an Agora Ballroom in ATL, too.

  • Lets see, 36 comments later and nobody answered your question, "is this enid oklahoma?"

The Agora Ballroom is in Cleveland...

I knew that but a 2 second search at google and you would have too:)

  • Sorry bro, who needs a Google search?

    "Is this Enid, Oklahoma?

    NOOO!

"No, not Enid, that's not right.. Is this Vermillion, South Dakota?

    NOOO!

"No, that's not right either... oh I can remember, this is CLEVELAND, OHIO!!!!

    YEAH!!!!!!

(yes, I'm a 70s fossil from the Rock & Roll Capital -- RIP Agora)

  • If you really want to hear some of Todds soul searching music try Hermit of mink hollow ,Todd explores a lot of taboo subjects ie Bag Lady etc....

  • This was on the "something anything"album, i have this on cd as well..Back when Todd was younger..:)Back when i was younger as well~~~~:)

  • this song was the coolest. i was in a class, poetry experience, the teacher was gorgeous when i got introduced to this song by the coolest girl ever. i carry this with me even 30 years later. how cool is that? can u relate?

  • Why is it, I always see Liv Tyler lately, when I look at the young Todd..?

  • hmmm, I wonder if there was ever a paternity test taken? Or did everyone just assume Steven was papa?

  • all you have to do is look at her in the face!

Its ALL S.T. IT wouldnt have made any difference

  • cturtleone..dont be such a bitch..what about the nazz????Todd founded his genius way back in the early 60's'''new world order was mostly 80's.something anything was his biggest hit on his own..:)

  • Mr Todd Rundgren is my hero.... was lucky to see him live in Edinburgh last week

  • i love this album and someone has to have it on video or dvd! "sometimes i just don't know!" who ever has this please, if it is you Todd, I have all of your other dvd's and i NEED this

  • what o LOVE about todd rundgren is that he is a ROMANTIC... IN ALL SENCES

  • ou've evidently never heard "If Not Now When or "No World Order" or Love of the Common Man for that matter. Most of the "love songs were earlier in his career. And you've definately haven't heard the Utopia album, "OOPS! Wrong Planet." Research before speaking or typing!

  • dont correct me....your wrong .......spare me PLEASE

  • You've DEFINATELY NEVER heard the album "Liars." And if you don't want people to comment on your remarks, you shouldn't make them!

  • when i say hes romantic.....it doesnt nessasarily have to reguard male/female....... and its true ......i havent heard those albums........ and yes i took exception to your "do research before typing" .... because i know that ppeople who ARE romantic dont STOP being that way :they're STUCK with it

    bye

  • You've DEFINATELY NEVER heard the album "Liars." And if you don't want people to comment on your remarks, you shouldn't make them!

  • snuffelsuf...say what you feel. As you say, Todd had a romantic core, probably still does. Although now, he's more concerned with his spirituality and whether or not God is really listening. I personally, think God IS listening, and is probably listening to Liars very closely. I don't know how that will pan out for Todd, but wherever he goes in the afterlife, I hope I'm there too.

c, if you can't say something nice...

  • TRUTH IS SWEET?

  • oh my god...what a video.....thanks so much

  • yes. it is unfortunate more people are not aware of the body of Todd Rungren's work.

  • Todd is Godd. Remember?

  • It's a shame that Todd wasn't deemed "commercial" enough to be promoted on the radio stations back then .

Alot of people really missed out on a ton of very high quality music. once again the commercial industry has let us down .

  • Amen, you are so right. So much QUALITY music from one person is just incredible. To paraphrase one of Todd's songs - "People are stupid, the industry's evil"

    Nonnikat.

  • It's cool to know that there are others out there that dig on Rundgren as I do. Back in the day I couldn't get anyone to listen to Todd or Utopia, just because after "Hello it's me" the commercial stations wouldn't [hardly] play anything else. And lets face it, people in the states at least, only want to suckle the commercial teat. It's like pulling teeth to get them to try anything different.

  • .... And the real funny thing is , that Rundgren performs such a huge veriety of music, that there really is something for everyone. I mean there is practicly every type of music to be found in the Todd library.

heavy metal, psychedelia, experimental, story telling, and of course ballids. All of it is high quality.

  • Yes you are so right. This is what I keep telling everyone. He does EVERYTHING. Even acapella. I bought some of his albums and gave them to my son and son-in-law for Christmas so they could see for themselves.

  • How did your son,and son-n-law like Todd?

My older brother likes Rundgren because he has always been into guitar gods, and Todd totally fits the bill there as well. I always said to people that all these pop stars [ who don't write their own music anyways] should cover Rundgrin tunes, so many are timeless, and can very easily be up dated [ or ruined]. There are litterly dozens of potentcial top ten hits.

  • .... especially if you play those tunes forty times a day for six months, like they do all that homaginized music they over play now.

  • They both said they haven't had a chance to listen yet. My son-in-law plays guitar in a hard rock band so I thought he would certainly appreciate the genius of Todd's work I'm sure he will when he gets a chance to listen. They are both in their late 30's and it is a shame they are not aware of Todd's body of work other than his couple of commercial hits. I pulled up a list of all the songs he has written Incredible. He is touring now and I am just waiting for him to get nearby so I can go.

  • Not to deface Todd's music, but I always feel that you could use many of his songs in those American Idol shows as showcases for singers, just as they will often use the songs of Stevie Wonder, for example.

  • Not a big fan of Am Idol but I agree. Todd Rundgren is one of the great songwriters. Hello Its Me and this song prove that. I have a lot of emotions and memories vested in his songs.

  • Pretty sure he wouldn't allow that... he keeps a really tight reign on his material... even going so far as to get rid of guitar tabs of his music...

And thank god for that... I'd hate to hear those corporate douchebags singing his work...

  • I always thought Todd should do a record of soul covers of his stuff, like the bossa nova thing he did a few years back...or, he could have some of the current R&B singers cover his stuff for him...this particular tune would be good, as well as "hurting for you", "compassion" and perhaps "sweeter memories"

  • Not a bad idea! Like a tribute soul album? Many songs to chose from. 'Pretending To Care' 'Change Myself', ' Love Is The Answer', Love Science'. Selections from the 'Nearly Human' CD too, of course. Let's make up our own list and send it to Mr Rundgren as a suggestion!

  • WHAT A MAN!

  • How can one human being compose all of the fabulous songs that this man has? He is from another world. Meaningful lyrics and beautiful music. True artist.

  • Estupenda colección de paisajes vocales. La composición del genio acá hace gala de frecura, solemnidad y romances apoteósicos.

    5 estrellas!

  • Like many of his tunes, other's took them further in the charts. - Love is the Answer (England Dan) - Can We Still be Friends (Robert Palmer)

Allison Kraus has a cover of this song.

  • i'm weak in the knees!

  • my alltime favorite version of this song

this has to be the version on back to the bars album

wonderful to see the video of it

  • Once again ...kudos rundgrenfan

  • oooohhhh la la...

  • OK, I'll jump in.... This song brings back all kinds of teen-angst. It is one of Todd's best "top 40" tunes, I think, and it is beyond me why it never was a hit single. I still like to sit down at my piano and play through this song. I never felt like the back-up vocals did the song justice. Get the chicks from "Hello its me..."

And, if Todd Rundgren was in Enid, OK in 1978 and I didn't know about it I am officially madder than hell.

  • i will never understand it either

this performance started me on a 30 year love affair with him

  • I think Manhattan Transfer had a minor hit with this later, but despite their killer harmonies,Todd's version is THE version

  • @tennbookman The Hello People also covered this song. HP became Todd's back up band back in the 70's and Todd produced Their 'Bricks' album in 1975 that features the cover of this hit single. Interesting.... an artist producing a cover of one of their hits! The HP version failed to chart. This live 1978 version from Todd sounds better than the original studio version.
