yes, it's a piece of nylon rope. the gar's beak is so tough that a hook won't pierce it, so we use pieces of frayed nylon that can get tangled in their teeth. half the fun of gar fishing is getting the rope out of the gar's mouth and holding the fish up for a picture without losing a limb :)

Do you really keep them until they are 200 lb and 9 ft long? because if u turn them out in open water, then im pretty sure that is iligal? :/

@makotochan86 I catch all my gar on mono, you dont have to use nylon. I let the gar run for about 20 seconds and then just set the hook.
