you have to use high temperature paint for the chimney portion. otherwise the heat from combustion will turn any color paint to black charcoal. Cold blast lanterns have a spring loaded chimney section. Hot blast has a bare frame crossmember at the top. Aladin lamps out of chicago are collection sought after interior oil lamps.
70 rating is the hour rating. Hours of useable light before needing to refill fuel. Lamp oil is scarce during a emergency. Tiki torch oil (non citronella) will burn well indoors. It does gell badly when you get it below like 20 some degrees but will clear up when warmed up. Tiki brand oil has a large parafin content to it. You can use citronella oil if you wanted to use it for outdoor use
Rather than paint it, could you have it electroplated with a heat-resistant decorative metal? Or tin? I think having the Air Pilot re-tinned might look cool.
I would love to see your whole collection. i collect oil lamps too but the kind you burn indoors that they mde in the 1800's but i am considering branching out lanterns seem pretty interestihng
Excellent video - I want to restore a couple of really old Dietz lanterns at my Mother-in-laws farm and was searching for info. What about something like a nice dark Hammerite finish? It may seem selfish/stupid to others, but I'm not worried about the value of the lamps, purely their aesthetic appeal to me :) Therefore I'm going to finish them as I see fit.
@dmckergan Hey Thank's man, make sure you check out my other lantern video's there's ton's of great information in them!!! That Hammerite finish would look super sweet!!!
I just bought a dietz no. 100 special p. g. & e. co. for $20, i looked it up, its said they were only be blue and grey for p. g. & e. co. but mine is red, Im trying to figure out how much it is worth, but i don't think i will ever get rid of it.
"Traffic Gards" (Yes it's actually spelled that way) XD are very interesting finds. They are rarer, and were actually made over the span of time when Dietz was taking over the Embury company. Hence the earliest models of this lantern will say "Embury Co.", the later ones will say "Dietz & Embury Co." and later still will say only "Dietz". Handlan Co. made a version of it as well, as it was a popular and successful design, but Handlan's looked alot different and is easily distinguishable.
Good video! Check out W.T Kirkman online, the biggest Dietz dealer in the U.S. He also makes a couple of his own models and has good historical info on his site. I have 3 Jupiters and 5 Blizzards that I use for outdoor lighting in my yard. When I get them new, I put a few oz. of Mobil 1 in the tank and swirl it around too coat the inside, then drain it thoroughly, then coat the outside with some on a rag. Keep in mind, mine are OUTSIDE ONLY, so I don't know about fumes, but they don't rust!
Thanks man!!! The Traffic Guards are a cool looking lanterns and for $10 what a deal. Someone gave me a "Little Wizzard" in rough shape with a leaking tank and i used a gas tank sealer called POR-15 and i fixed the tank, the company claims it will outlast the tank! I will post a vid of the finished lantern next week when it has it's new paint job, thanks for checkin out my video i hope to have more in the next couple of weeks!! -SxDxFan
Very cool, I bought a couple Dietz Traffic guards from a flea market about ten years ago ($10 for the pair, rough shape though). I just did some research before watching this, I had no idea what they were used for. Yo did a nice job cleaning them up. Being they are inexpensive and there's probably a million out there, I wouldn't be so concerned about keeping them origional. I really like that Little Giant though.
Will the oven cleaner method in the trash bag remove rust as well?
