mice are always passing feces. That's what contaminates food they rummage in. that and urine marking. Hamsters will do the same, but have a set lavatory room in their burrows.

Also this mouse was lucky, as the hamster might have made a sudden killing bite. They are very efficient at killing mice.

Google 'Syrian Hamster' they can get pretty big. You are probably just used to either seeing them without a tiny mouse next to them, or you are used to only seeing and owning the tiny dwarf hamsters.

Either way, I've owned two Syrians, and both were as big as the ones in this video.
