I agree with you Dr. I have used this material for alot of different applications. About a year ago I began painting with it. I mean on canvass. It's great if you ever want to get a thick base of texture that doesnt dry out. It stays wet long enough and the colors are bad for blending either.
Thanks for posting such informative videos! I have a novice question for you. I'm getting ready to buy my first house, a 1.5 story that I realized has no return air vent upstairs. There is a return air vent downstairs and I was wondering could I install one upstairs above the one downstairs and the new ine meet the existing one downstairs? I'm a single woman and and want to learn all I can l I can so I can do some work on my own and know what is going on with my house. Thanks in advance.
Ductboard hack...what are those free samples of mastic. Would you eat off of the inside surface of that ductboard crap? That's for chainsaw Charlie only!!
i never saw someone put mastic on the outside of the ductboard, since u have access to the inside why not mastic inside of the return box and around tap collar?
Well Dr Z I need you to come on by my house LOL I have had three different AC men and one of them had to come three time in one year and twice in the last two years. My AC doesn't cool the house evenly the bedrooms on one side of the house stay hot and directly across the hall stays cool the living room and dining room always freezing. the heat is now blow ice cold air, feels like straight from outside. the room that stay hot in the summer are the only rooms getting heat now. Any ideas?
@darlynn12 Sounds like to me that you need return air vents in the hot rooms to draw some cool air towards those rooms, vice versa in the winter time. Or maybe your ductwork is disconnected or failed. Is your ductwork sealed? Insulated? Does it feel like there is the same amount of air coming out of those as it is every vent, should feel the same. Maybe try balancing the air by dampering down other vents that are pushing alot more air out them then the vents in the hot rooms.Hope this helps.
I am thinking maybe the ductwork isn't sealed or way to old. The Ac man came today he tried to tell me it was the relays but I have hard time believing that b/c it does heat 3 rooms very well to hot actually. He also told me my inside unit was a 1962 when he replaced it 6 years but he didn't do any ductwork. When he went it in the attic he came out sweating which leads me to believe the heat is staying up there b/c it was 19 degrees today. I will try replacing the duckwork. Thanks for your help.
No problem, sealing air leaks and insulating ductwork helps a ton, might check or see about that first, might save you some money. Im sure Dr. Z would fix it right for you!
Great Job Dr. Zarkloff, It would be nice if the origonal installer seen this video.
Here in Illinois there are way to many undersized return air systems, as well as furnace manufactures building furnaces shorter, having smaller blower compartments, which require additional return air connections to the furnace on the larger blower drives. Which offten times gets overlooked by the installers.
Our A/C installer installed an A coil on our mobile home furnace and made box around it. The installer suggested installing another return vent above the current one. No vent was installed and the gill whistles so much that I removed. Dad hates the hole in the wall. I told him you don't have to sleep next to the furnace like I do.
I have a feeling you might already agree the return is too small and you haven't even seen it lol.
I am a Duct Sealent and High Temperature silicone magnet too. Even if I have gloves on I am usually covered in it !!! How the hell did I get it in my hair...... Great looking job...
Thanks. I actually knew about this problem for a couple of years. I found the problem when the weather was hot. I hate crawling around hot attics. So, I decided to wait for cooler weather. When the cooler weather arrived I was out of energy or something. But then the weather turned hot before I got the energy to do the work. I'm on vacation right now so I had both cool weather and energy.
Thumbs up for great workmanship. Increasing return air plenum volume and grille size is a sure way to quiet down almost every system. Woulda liked to have a before and after comparison of the return air noise. Regardless... really good video and demonstration.

@seekinshadows Yes you can install a return duct upstairs. The more return air to the air handler the better.

Pure laziness got the best of me. It's easier to do work in the attic in the cool weather. It sounds like a nice day there.

It's very possible that it is too small. It's amazing how installing a larger return can improve matters.
