Jame Darren Officer Jim Corrigan of the hit show T J Hooker with William Shatner and Heather Locklear and Andrian Zmed! I grew up as a young child listening to this song In the middle 60's Rock On.
I remember this song from 1961 when my brother left his clock alarm radio on when he left early for school and "Goodbye Cruel World" played while I was sleeping. When I woke up and went to school, I told my classmates about hearing this song and I practically had the words memorized. One of my favorites.
A side note: seeing the "Colpix" label reminded of the days when every movie studio had its own record label: MGM Records, Columbia Pictures, ABC Paramount, Warner Bros. Records, MCA/Universal, and so on, in addition to the regular labels such as RCA, Mercury, Capitol, Decca, etc.
Not only was James Darren a great singer, he also starred in Irwin Allen's The Time Tunnel. It lasted only one season. And I know he was a regular on T.J. Hooker.
Still remember when this song was popular. My mother received as a gift from her boss a little porcelain figure that had an older lady sitting on a toilet pulling on a chain, and when one assisted pulling on the chain the old lady would go you know where. The toilet had the words, "goodbye cruel world" on it. Very memorable!
I also remember the Donna Reed show with this song. He was riding in the car when the song comes on the car radio, and sings along with it. If I recall it correctly, he was wearing a US Army uniform. Somebody musat have this clip to post. Please!
James Darren is the man for singing this awesome song while later starring in Match Game...Always had a sensible answer...Poor guy had to sit next to Brett Somers...R.I.P. Brett
Can anyone tell me if they remember seeing James Darren sing this on The Donna Reed Show. The episode was called "One Starry Night". Does anyone have this episode on video or on dvd ? I would really like to see it. Anyone who knows where I can get it - Please write back to me. Thanks.

@50s60steenidols I remember seeing that episode - James Darren was riding in a convertible with the top down with the son. I never could find anyone else that remembered it! I'd love to see that again too. Sorry I can't help you find it :(
@taliesinjones Thankyou so much for writing back. That episode was from season 4 of Donna Reed. I wish they would release the 4th season on DVD. You must have been a little kid when you saw that episode. It originally aired in October 1961. I am 51 and have never seen it. I would love to see it one day. Thankyou for telling me about it. It was so nice to hear from you. Jay
@50s60steenidols Jay - Do you know what is on the flip side of GCW? I hate to have to dig thru my 45s to find out LOL YT has quite a few clips from the old shows if you search Donna Reed. I'm 59 so I remember it well. Thanks for writing! Tena
@taliesinjones It is so nice of you to write back. You Tube doesn't have that clip. You had to be 10 when you saw that episode.Valerie was on the flipside. Tena, did you see the episode where Paul Petersen sang "She Can't Find Her Keys". I would love to see that also. Thank's again for writing. Jay
@taliesinjones I'm also 59! Always watched Donna Reed and love James Darren. This was one of my favorite songs...still is.. So many great songs at that time.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jimmy Darren years ago while working at a Variety Club telethon here in Philly... what I remember most was that he was very down to earth and approachable. Not like some of the so-called "celebrities" I met at these events.
ive never really liked oldies but after hearing this on my grandmas radio i love all oldies this is a great song and thank you for making a vid for it
I first learned of James Darren when I saw him as Vic Fontaine in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I instantly liked him, but I had no idea he was really as good as he is! Thank you kindly for this.
I adore this song! THANKS so much for posting it! In addition to being a fine actor, James Darren had a pretty good singing voice. Can't think of any other top ten hit that had a calliope in it! It's such a fun tune. You've made my day & my week! I hope you & yours have been having your HAPPIEST holiday season ever! :)
Hey, yeah I had it posted here a few months ago but there was a proplem with the copyright for some reason so the Youtube staff took it away so unfortuanetly I can't keep it posted...keep on rockin'
@greaser1993 I think you can get Pin a Medal on Joey on I Tunes. That is one of my very favorite songs by James Darren. You should get his best of cd. That song is on there and you would like all the songs on it. Sincerely JAY.
Gloria Shayne Baker who wrote the song also was the the calliope-like riff used in the song. She did it on the demo that Jimmy Darren heard and on his recording and they just kept it as it sounded so real. Wow, some range.

"Goodbye, cruel world!" - Hubie & Bertie (Cheese Chasers - 1951)
from WB's Merry Melodies and Looney Tunes
that hilariously funny expression would show up in other cartoon character monologues (Daffy Duck? Bugs Bunny?) song lyrics and like-named songs
spent a lifetime, when sad, reminding myself with those words and how NOT to die by it
as a lonely child, watching cartoons was all i had for words of wisdom
