I was suprised to note that Bob Hope made jokes that were critical of the war effort like "Vietnam-who needs it?" and "the Ho Chi Minh Trail was backed up like the Hollywood Freeway" which is a comment on how ineffectual the bombing was.
Bob wasn't necessarily being critical of the war effort... he was reflecting upon the thoughts and words of the soldier.
The joke about Ho Chi Minh Trail backed up like the Hollywood Freeway refers to Pres. Johnson's decision to have a bombing halt on North Vietnam, which resulted in their ability to ship more men and weapons down the HCM Trail.
Thanks for the memories. In this 1968 Cam Rahn show, I was one of those guys in the back with jungle fatigues and a can of beer. We complained about the film cameras blocking our view of the Gold Diggers. Ann Margaret's dancing drove everybody nuts. Up close, I saw that Bob Hope's makeup was melting in the heat. That was such a long time ago. Where did you get the footage? Thanks again.

Yes there needs to be more of Bob Hope.
On this clip, I couldn't help to notice that I never seen one spectator with a weapon.
Where I was you never went to the outhouse without your weapon. Of course I was several miles north. But we still love Bob Hope.
