They got the same system around Munich.. And like you tell in teh video you always have to enter and leave the hard shoulder.. I think it would make more sensce to make a 4th lane then this.. If you having a break down where will u stop??
@aid2003 If you break down using the hard shoulder, its no problem, because they have created what looks like Lay-bys to pull into should you have a problem, so you can still pull off the road and be relatively safe.
Also the lanes are monitored by CCTV cameras, so at any time an operator can close down the hard shoulder to traffic if need be.
We only use hard shoulder driving on parts of the motorway that have been specially modified with refuge areas incase of breakdown.
@weirdstuffanimation7 I see loads of people every day who don't have a clue about using this open lane, even though the overhead signs are telling them to use the hard shoulder for the next exit, they carry on as usual, then cut across last minute, drives me mad! Grrr - You can always spot the non-regular drivers out there, in a world of there own, accidents waiting to happen some of them.
bet your doing the Reading run on a regular basis nowadays.. ha ha :-)
hey that looks like a hell of an improvement from what i can remember ,that stretch of motorway use to be an absolute nightmare during day light hours ,atleast the traffic is flowing thats got to be good for all users
have a good one mate , you guys must be getting some nice sunny days now feeling a bit like winter downunder
@colinj58 Believe me it is a massive improvement, not perfect because lets say people who don't drive for a living, behave more selfishly and can have poor lane discipline, so instead of getting in the correct lane for exiting, they still just cut straight across 3 lanes at the last second, you know how it goes. Seems weird talking to someone who knows this stretch of M6 yet lives in Oz... :-)
We've just had the hottest April on record in 100 years, bloody marvellous :-))
the last time that i have pass there the traffic seems more flowing as usual.Ithink that it is a good system around the big city. They have made the same near Paris for the A4 A86 and the traffic is better now
@7784Patrick The traffic is definitely improved around this section, not completely solved but much better flowing at peak times now. I think as more people learn how to use the lanes it could become much better still.
@slimmon2000 The dreaded Toll Road - must admit in the early days, I did use it on about 3 occasions, but I was short on time, & it was the quickest way to me next Pick-up, it also only cost a £5 I was impressed, no traffic and it served me well.
Then the greedy Gits just kept banging the price up, almost £11 now, which I just can't justify even if I am short on time. so their loss in my book, must be loads of folk who think the same way too.
@overcastwithshowers I think if you drove this section Im showing here regular enough, you would change your mind, trust me, its been massively improved, 4 lanes to use now at busy times instead of 3 - plus you still have safe havens to go into should you need to pull over for whatever reason. I too thought like you, but have seen how it works, and it does work well once you know how to use it. Just gotta keep reading those gantry signs and follow orders.. ha ha
@birdman404 There are small lay-bys every so often, you would pull into one of those, and then you would be seen on a CCTV camera, there are loads of them, and the lane would then be closed to other traffic and revert back to usual 3 lane stuff until the broken down vehicle had been sorted out.
Not only a great day out in the van, I get entertained, and now a public information service....This is certainly the way to travel Paul....one thing that does worry me though is what happens in the event of a brake down...where can you stop safely!....Brilliant piece of quality work from the Road Master, and another 10/10 from me....Bob
@robmasterman Public Service, ha ha - thats my new role now I think. Should you breakdown, they have built alongside the hard shoulder, these new lay-bys, and so you would head for the next one coming up, they are quite frequent, so plenty of them, you would also be seen on CCTV and most likely the hard shoulder would be closed to traffic until you were sorted out and on your way again, but not always, I have seen cars in the lay-by and traffic still passes by ok. A good idea really - Thx Bob
Hi Paul , The Kaiser chiefs should use this footage for this track . It worked well . with royalties of course l.o.l. I don't use M6 much but will be soon , What a night mare :-) Glad you posted this to let us know , Cheer's Terry
@terence20001 Your much better off keeping well away from the M6 sometimes if you don't need to be on it, its a real pain in the ass at times. A lot of it stems from poor lane discipline, inconsiderate drivers, slow coaches, by that I mean Mr 70 year old doing 45 - 50 when everything else is moving much quicker around him, he then becomes this rolling road block all by himself, I could go on, but Im limited .. just as well. Rant over. :-)
Thanks Terry - I think driving is getting to me LOL
@1958IanM Dont start me on this one! - There is a small amount of confusion I think in one area, & thats as you approach J9 southbound, all traffic joining from on ramp at J10 stay in LH lane as instructed, then the next sign says LH lane for J9 exit only, next thing is they are trying to push back in as you would, but if its mega busy, traffic soon stops, then people such as me wanting to exit at 9 can't because everything has stopped, so no gain for me. We need Public Information Films again
we have hardshoulder systems here in Germany too, e. g. between Hamburg and Kiel. When there is much traffic, they open the hard shoulder. But a lot of drivers do not understand this system.
@multivan2001 That situation sounds exactly the same as what happens over here too, some people just wont budge no matter what, very frustrating at times especially when its very busy and you can see if everyone kept to one side, they would stop becoming a "Rolling Road Block" and allow faster cars to pass by.
We need "Public Information Films" again like we used to get years ago. education! is key here.
Thanks Nils I will get off my soap box and be quiet now... ha ha :-)
Have got on that stretch of road,as soon as used hard shoulder had to get back into normal lane due to slip roads with traffic, good when coming off junctions though. But video good if haven't been on before.Hard when use own auto pilot driving & know it different with this system.Nearly missed my junction.
@tesabear I understand what your saying, yes no sooner you move into hard shoulder lane, you have to move back again if approaching J9 southbound for instance, this can cause traffic jam as people move back into normal lane again. Thanks for watching :-)
Nice catch Paul i do not know what you are doing this bank holiday,i have just told Walter that i am going to have a few beers for his birthday i will most likely go out on the Regal Lady and stand at the bar LOL.......John
@johnwood57 I shall neck a couple of bottles myself I dare say during the day, shortly Im being dragged off to a garden centre, you don't know how lucky you are!! :-))
Have one or two on the Regal Lady for me while your at it, I shall be with you in Spirit as they say - Cheers! :-)

If only people would read and understand what the overhead gantry signs are saying :-(
'Use hardshouler for M5 only' does not mean 'Only use the hardshoulder for M5'.
Car after car the other week tried to squeeze in front of me instead of staying in their lane for the M5.
Gggrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
