This is my favourite Leonard Cohen song. He's such an inspiration.
I've read a couple of comments here and it really saddens me. You know ? I think most people are quite used to MTV stuff. I don't really care for that.
I think, people are trying to wake up, but they don't seem to know how. We've been asleep for far too long now. We don't even know how to think, we lack the skeptic tools to archieve a consciousness that would allow us to evolve as human beings
ah well , i've been a fan of his music for about 7 yrs and it doesn't age, it's still relavent even now...but i don't think democracy will take in america, cause we are too ignorant of the rights of man,,,california is an excellent example, supposed to be progressive but they trample on the bill of rights every day from peaceful assembly to the right to travel...
This is a very haunting song. I heard a clip of this on Thom Hartmann's show, and I knew I had to find the rest. It's an amazing song. It's just great.
I compare Cohen's lyrics to some of the posts here, and I am astounded by the chasm between thought the processes. I'll quote Senator Moynihan: Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts" But then most of the trolls here wouldn't have a clue as to what he was talking about. Lenny's from heaven.
damn good thing they didn't choose indigo to represent commies cuz what would you say "those indigoos" (as in goo) or "those indigo-os(as in oh's") it would be a tough choice
@emdoub That cliche is the biggest lie, the sheep massively outnumber the wolves. Real democracy is the wolves biggest fear. Western 'democracy' is really fascism.
I like this song too. Since the protests started, it has so much more meaning. This song is played on a couple of my Sirius radio shows (Thom Hartman & Mike Malloy-America Left).
Such a great song with such a horrendously narcissistic video. I wish the director/maker of the video actually understood the song before making the video. Oh well.
@longfootbuddy Which is why the founders gave us a constitutional republic, where there were only certain limited powers given to the federal government and several areas where they were expressly forbidden from exercising power. Most of our problems as a nation can be traced to the federal government overstepping those bounds.
@patriot17300 i dont consent to have representatives appointed for me.. all this is done without my consent, forced on me by threats of violence, fines and imprisonment
@longfootbuddy I am so honored, so very honored and so very humbled to even receive a response- any response- from a man of your clearly superior intellectual powers! And please, if I may, please allow me to apologize on behalf of not only myself but indeed the entire human race for our relative boorishness and collective stupidity, which must be a source of great annoyance to you and your magnificent mind, and I thank you a million thank you's for your graciousness in allowing us to live in
@voxhammer im glad youre impressed, but its just simple logic.. you are right though, most people cant understand, and yes it is very annoying to live amongst such fools
@longfootbuddy "Simple logic" indeed! Your humility is second only to your mind boggling intellect. Again I thank you for carrying the burden of your unequaled genius so that you may share it with your lessers on YouTube. Although we are surely ill-equipped to fully reap the fruits of your heroic mental labors, we can still benefit just from basking in the glow of your brilliance.
@longfootbuddy Yes sir! If you recommend that I wash my hand then wash my hand I shall! And with a verve unlike that of any previous handwashing, for I know that this handwashing is at the order of the greatest mind in all humanity. I do not pretend to understand the reasoning behind the washing of a single hand, for I know that if you felt my simple mind could comprehend an explanation you would have offered one. Thank you for sparing me the torture of trying to comprehend your brilliance.
@longfootbuddy I am so honored that you have chosen me worthy of further explanation of one of your treasures of wisdom, and while it is quite a struggle for me to stretch my mind to accommodate even a modest portion of the brilliance that comes so easily to you, it is surely worth the effort.
@voxhammer that was thoroughly enjoyable!!!! , i do not recommend similar continued discourse with yet more commenters as the opportunities presented to you will be endless and the diminishing return on your real brilliance will become apparent to you ! nevertheless not only have you put refocused someones lofty self opinion but even more you have provided some timely humour which this reader found absolutely hilarious !!!
@longfootbuddy Not at all mate. Democracy is the tyranny of the minority forcing the majority to do anything they please, but (here's the trick) making them believe they've got a choice. And boy ! they always make awful choices.
So if I could, I wouldn't vote. I don't care for that. They don't need me to do what they want. I sure hell don't need them. What we need is to change our ways, start focusing on the humane point of view. We've all got much more in common than they let us think.
@Gonzarnr i know that the majority are manipulated.. they are stupid, ignorant fools that allow their freedom (and ours, through their great democracy) to be thrown away, and are EASILY manipulated and steered around... i dont want these fools forcing their errors on me.. i dont want them doing anything in my name.. i dont want them appointing representatives, leaders, rules... nothing.. they are a bunch of blind fools that have voted their way to slavery
@Gonzarnr democracy is NOT a minority forcing a majority to do anything.. a democracy is a majority vote... the majority rules the vote... just because the majority are so stupid that a small group can manipulate them into doing their will, doesnt make demacracy anything besides the rule of a majority.. think of it like this, a democracy is a frankenstein monster, mindlessly being controlled by a mad scientist.. when any of us try to stand up to it, it is the monster that attacks us
@longfootbuddy The thing is my friend, people don't really have a choice. It's staged. Before, long before, people go to the polls everything has already been bought and sold. We don't have a place in it.
Corporations pay "billions & billions" in dollars for political campaigns, and they pay both sides. It doesn't really matter who "wins", it doesn't really matter who you've chosen.
The owners are NOT the politicians they are the ones who pay them off. Say Rockefeller, or whoever.
It is all in the words, said clearly in a strong voice, these words leave nothing out. And sadly are just as applicable today as when the song was written. With the catchy music the words stay with you all the more. If you liked this song check out Cohen's song Anthem it is from the same album, The Future, as this song (Democracy). And if anyone hears any other meaningful songs like this drop me a comment - Thanks

LOVELOVELOVE this guy. Great song/video, but, sadly missing in the pics is any of the color (except for one little black boy riding his bike) that IS America.
@nambassa2000 The ICSPCA defines the crime of apartheid as "inhuman acts committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group ... over another racial group ... and systematically oppressing them." could the same not be said for the Israelis from Palestinians or are we just stretching a bit by branding it "APARTHEID" because really they are not different racial groups.
No longer any credibility or power Cohen when he decided he would join the Israeli ZioNazis & their fascist march against Palestinians Peter of Nambassa

What is Republic? Sovereignty (S) is not in a group. S is not accountable to higher authority&doesn’t have to explain why he does what he does. Just can’t injure another. It’s advisory. Founding Fathers understood stability, authority&reliability of custom&usage&trusted that principle.

There is no democracy in the US For there 2 be democracy, everyone must be equal economically otherwise only the rich can afford 2 buy the government & that is not democracy, but a capitalist oligarchy. We only have an illusion of democracy. When you vote, your choices are to vote for 2 candidates that both are employees of corporations & wall street, because only wealthy elites can afford to spend millions on candidates. This is why they have trillions to bailout wall street, but none 4 schools
@LadyRavenhaire Everyone being equal economically has nothing to do with democracy. That's Marxism. However, in a true democracy, no one should be able to buy out politicians. Does ANYONE think that government is fair anymore? The best we can do is call out politicians when financial gain leads to their political actions. Too bad actual good honest people don't run ... it's only the power-hungry who want to have the power, and that's why good honest people are left to swallow what they dish.
For all those bringing their democratic/republican argument here, may I recommend reading the Federalist Papers by Madison or a thousand other writings from the 1770's. We were founded as the United States of America - a unique, hybrid style of government. Even the founding fathers couldn't agree on exactly what we were founded as. We're a bit of everything.
When you only see black and white, you miss an amazing array of colors :) Middle points are often far more stable than extremes.
@FeanorRed If you look at the founding of our country, only Hamilton and Adams were in favor of political parties, and they were as close to being British Loyalists as one could be without being shot. George Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin, were all vehemently opposed to "factions" or political parties. So, basically if there's an argument over which party fulfills the dreams of the founding fathers, the answer is neither.
@RANTAFTW Wrong. Just as when teapublicans claim that Lincoln was a republican, it was an entirely diffenrent paradigm. Only the name was a similarity.
But he said jefferson did not beleive in poltical parties, founding a party, regardless of idealogy, would be beliveing in poltical parties, would it not?
@RANTAFTW Why would that be true? I don't believe in the two party system here, yet in order to be part of the government and its functions I must support one of two parties. It was similar with him. He didn't like the concept and wasn't alone. Yet when his rivals and opponents began creating these groups and parties he was, of necessity, obliged to form one.
@RANTAFTW Jefferson founded the Democratic Republicans in opposition to federalists like Hamilton. Actually, this was the democratic republican party until Jackson came about and the republican part dropped off. The Democratic Party has been around since the 1790's. The G.O.P. has been around since 1852. I misspoke when I said Jefferson.
Any form of government will fall apart when it's taken to it's extreme. No one practices a true direct democracy. Athens, in ancient Greece, was about as close as history's ever been to a large scale, long term practice of direct democracy.
The founding fathers defined America in a thousand different ways in their writings for a reason. We weren't founded as a direct democracy or a strict federal republic-something different, yet similar, to both.
Democracy is coming to the USA, and that's not a good thing. I'll keep us a republic if it's all the same to you. I love every song of Mr. Cohen, your voice could melt ice.
Only a Becker head would think that Democracy was a bad thing and a threat to the republic. If you had ever read Thomas Paine you would know that a country can be both a Democracy and a Republic.
@justincase80634 I don't understand why some people cannot distinguish between little-d democracy as a principle and a process and big D Democracy, as in direct Democracy, as a form of government.
Great song!! But if this guys wins again the country doomed!!!!!!!!

Alli8833 11 months ago 2
@Alli8833 But to be fair in a constitutional republic buying a politician wouldn't get you anywhere.

@LadyRavenhaire yup...u speak the words of Aristotle. without economic democracy there is no democracy!!
morvarid69 9 months ago
@LadyRavenhaire FYI, the world will never be perfect, "democracy" is therefore just a relative term...if you understand...

A Democracy has been defined as "two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner"
The USA was founded as a 'Constitutional Republic'.

@JGMagoo majority rule is two wolves and a lamb deciding on what to have for diner, democracy is a well armed lamb

Why doesn't this video work? Pink background with some VEVO adverts, but no video. Endless 'loading' throbber but no video.
Used to work before 'VEVO' branding was slapped on everything.

FeanorRed 1 year ago
@FeanorRed If you look at the founding of our country, only Hamilton and Adams were in favor of political parties, and they were as close to being British Loyalists as one could be without being shot. George Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin, were all vehemently opposed to "factions" or political parties. So, basically if there's an argument over which party fulfills the dreams of the founding fathers, the answer is neither.

Jefferson founded the republican party
RANTAFTW 9 months ago
@RANTAFTW Wrong. Just as when teapublicans claim that Lincoln was a republican, it was an entirely diffenrent paradigm. Only the name was a similarity.
kenandkids 9 months ago
@kenandkids
But he said jefferson did not beleive in poltical parties, founding a party, regardless of idealogy, would be beliveing in poltical parties, would it not?
RANTAFTW 9 months ago
@RANTAFTW Why would that be true? I don't believe in the two party system here, yet in order to be part of the government and its functions I must support one of two parties. It was similar with him. He didn't like the concept and wasn't alone. Yet when his rivals and opponents began creating these groups and parties he was, of necessity, obliged to form one.
kenandkids 9 months ago
@RANTAFTW Jefferson founded the Democratic Republicans in opposition to federalists like Hamilton. Actually, this was the democratic republican party until Jackson came about and the republican part dropped off. The Democratic Party has been around since the 1790's. The G.O.P. has been around since 1852. I misspoke when I said Jefferson.

A pure Democracy has been defined as two wolves and one sheep voting on what to have for dinner.
What the USA is SUPPOSED to be is a REPUBLIC, meaning a government controlled by laws....ie: a Constitution!
JGMagoo 1 year ago 3
@JGMagoo
FeanorRed 1 year ago
LOL! Silly people thinking if you're a democracy, you can't be a republic. Get a freakin' grip on reality.

Democracy is coming to the USA, and that's not a good thing. I'll keep us a republic if it's all the same to you. I love every song of Mr. Cohen, your voice could melt ice.

@justincase80634
Only a Becker head would think that Democracy was a bad thing and a threat to the republic. If you had ever read Thomas Paine you would know that a country can be both a Democracy and a Republic.
SamWiseGingy 1 year ago
@justincase80634 I don't understand why some people cannot distinguish between little-d democracy as a principle and a process and big D Democracy, as in direct Democracy, as a form of government.
