TRUE stone edifices don't prove a damn thing..100% agreed with you on that, you know what proves it though. Monks and saints sitting in caves and in the mountains that meditate for hours and hours a day and have divine experiences. Many average people I know that have taken up hindu meditation have had divine experiences as well.

I hate when academics say that this was the golden age of indian civilization. They know nothing, indian civilization was much much older than this. Ashoka was indeed one of the greatest, but he was a bit cruel in his earlier part of life. In my opinion the Chandragupta Vikramiditya was best of all kings in India. He was best in ever yway. His time of ruling was the Golden period for India. Nobody else could leave such a mark of Great ruling, generosity and wise. Even now his justice and his wise is the best legends in India.

My favorite King is Chandragupta Maurya - the first known Emperor to found the nation-state of India. He too was heavily influenced by the non-violent religion of Jainism and is known to have abdicated his throne in search of salvation.
Though there have been many greats , like Ashoka , Kanishka the Kushan , Chandragupta Vikramaditya , Akbar et al , I believe that his rule was extraordinary - in the sense that he had every element ,in bits , that all other future emperors had.

Hmm, bit of a mix of info here isn't there? For example, the edict stating he planted the trees was much later than the mention of the Kalinga war- the trees and wells were planted long after the battle according to every piece of evidence we have. Also, we know almost nothing about his Army except through scraps in the Asoka Avandana and event that isn't too clear. Many other things are wrong too.
I do wish historical drama makers would spend more than an afternoon doing research sometimes.
