  • I love your tutorials! Thank you for making them! They are really useful and fun.

  • How is he getting those clean straight lines?

  • gorillaz

  • My question is how do you start off an actual thing. Do you just sketch something until it looks good then continue to detail it layer by layer until the smallest detail? and how long did this take you to do?

  • is this possible/not insanley difficult without a tablet?

  • a ver por que no te dibujas a speedy gonzales a ver si e s cierto que muy canelas?

  • TNX

  • Thank you man im a bit of an artist myself and always wanted to do concept art =D 5 stars

  • Goddamn that's awesome. I'll be graduating in 2 years and am looking forward to joining the industry. I need to start practicing :]

Any advice or tips from seasoned concept artists would be great.

  • i adivce u some tips, first of all, star to drawing perspectives, can be cars, i started this way back then, well try to think in 3d, all the time, second all the time draw fast, and dont get stuck with details, when u finish ur sketch, star with details, will be more easy for u. when u got this, then star with colors, i made it with chartpak. 3 u have to perhaps the light how falls down, angle, to color the light and shade. thats all. U need to practice a lot

  • @tercermundista42 lolwut

  • from where are you graduating? and how do i get into the industry?

  • @DarkShuriken Alberta college of art and design in calgary.

  • bro that was some helpful tips.

practice makes perfection. keep it up man !

  • Hello. I'm starting a project on my channel, and I need some artists with free time to assist me in this effort. If you could stop by my channel when you get a chance, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

  • great tips!

  • I've been wandering for weeks now on how to configure my tablet's buttons to do certain things on photoshop.. can you plz tell me where can i do that?

  • if you have a wacom tablet you should be able to set certain functions to your tablet through through the "properties" program, that you get with the software you install from the disks provided, there should be a folder in programs list like wacom or pen tablet, it'll be in there, then you can set say: right click to you pen which will bring up the brush option in photoshop etc

  • well i know how to configure my tablet i just don't know where in photoshop is the brushes window hotkey configuration... I tried the hotkey editor on the edit tab and can't find where is the hotkey for that specific window... Although i somehow made it spawn in right click and now i'm trying to fix that cause i wanted the original function of the right click...

  • it's on "right click" for brushes, u can just scroll down for different brushes, set it to the pen rather than the tablet it's much easier (you know the little button on it's side), soz if i'm no help (:

  • really god vid rated 5* really helpt me!

  • dont understand bro how can you have all those shapes and segments forms of the jet in your head. it just sucks when I want to do something like this. I could improve though, but I really dont understand how can someone do this in cs2 or what else program.

  • what program is this? im aiming to be a concept artist but all ive done so far is hand sketching haha.

  • well the title of the video is :"Photoshop Concept Art Tutorial *For Beginners* : Sketching & Simple Value - 2 - Jet" so i think its photoshop :)

  • Photoshop

  • Your biggest priority should be making detailed sketches in a short amount of time. Once you have that down (highly doubt it) - then you are on your way to becomming a concept artist.

  • who is the music by? im addicted

  • Sounds like gorillaz to me, though i could be wrong!

  • gorrilaz :)

  • Sounds good. I really appreciate it because I could tell I went way overboard on layers on my last attempt to draw something. I'll give simplicity a shot ;)

  • I just wish I knew how often you make new layers, especially for more detailed/colored sketches. I never know what is an appropriate time for a new layer besides the foreground and background.

  • All this was on one layer, bro.

Almost everything I do is on one layer.

  • Well that's good to hear, but I think when it comes to more elaborate sketches, you almost have to use multiple layers right?

  • Not really man - honestly.

I know some guys and gals who ONLY work using one layer, but of course they go about it very painterly-minded. Honestly, getting hung up on layers and how many I should have for what i'm doing was a serious problem for me starting out...I only used 2 layers eventually, so I could have less to micro manage. The less layers, for me, I feel, the more control i'll have. Try using 2 layers max, if you can, bro - see if that helps.

  • I like to use three layers:

    highlights

    midtones

    shadows

Its all in how your brain likes to arrange things

  • @doohuh I'm not much of a drawer. but I work with photoshop alot. I usually use a new layer if I'm working with a different colour. or even section of my work

  • Did you use a graphic tablet for this?

  • yeah dude he's using a tablet

  • awesome :D

  • Really nice. I was entertained and interested the whole way.

  • I like it. Gave me some great tips on how to start it

I would like to know though, where do you get the ideas for details?

ex. you were drawing the jet and mentioned that you dont normally draw vehicles. but you kept adding in details that fit the overall look of a jet.

So basically, where do you get these mental images of where to add this and that? cause i got mind blank everytime i start up something "original"

  • I honestly don't know where i'm going when I start to sketch things out, man. If you're having trouble visualizing, or well, in better terms, imagining what you want to do, you can always look at references or others' artwork for inspiration. At the time, I wasn't looking at any particular image, but that doesn't mean you can't pull up a photo on a browser and use it as a foundation for what you intend to draw.

  • Ok so heres the deal im a great paper artist (not to sound cocky) but i want to be a concept artist. Is the transition hard and is there a pen you use for this?

  • It's not that hard, you get one of those tablets, and you'll get used to it after a few days. But the tools you use on photoshop will look like alien symbols at first. But it's just about how fast you can learn to adapt.

  • Dude, you don't have to work digitally to be a concept artist. Digital skills will be useful, but you can do concept art in any form you like.

  • photoshop crash course:

    myspace/occartcenter

  • i want to be a concept artist and was wondering how i could make it a career?

  • wouldn't know man - i'm not technically a 'hired' concept artist right now,

i'm trying to do the same thing.

honestly, best way to find out is to check out companies that hire concept artists, look at their job openings and find a concept artist opening and all the requirements. And complete all of those requirements, and apply, and hope that they accept you. That's...well, literally, that's the jist of it.

  • @bedavelli One of the problems with that would be that major companies tend to only hire artists with experience. Where's the entry, you know?

(Rhethorical question - you already said you don't know)

  • This is a pretty cool video man

    thank you

im tryin to get this whole tablet thing down

im going to try and do this exact thing

    thanks again

  • are you going from a reference image? or you going straight off the dome?

  • Dome bro -

    always.

And honestly, vehicles are a new territory for me. I pretty much draw people, poses, soldiers, characters etc etc all from my head. I've got this real..."impatience" for alot of reference. I can't help but sit down and really take a ton of time getting the likeness of whatever you are looking at sometimes -

i've got this real a.d.d. mindset of working and yeah, I pretty much throw up a blank canvas and roll.

To answer your question : 100% dome piece

  • good for you, dude -

everyone goes through that big learning curve, it seems like a daunting thing at first, like, 'omg look at all these dudes insane backgrounds oh no',

it's an incredible thing to dabble in, it's nuts how much stuff I learned on my own just by screwing around with it in PhotoCS1, and that's why I like posting these kind of vids-

always start out just trying to do building blocks, man, always. Try to set smaller goals when doing it, it'll help out with the learning curve.

  • hey what background music is that? sounds like Gorillaz

  • Yep, you guessed right man.

  • If you want to make this into a tutorial and don't want to record your voice then use 'the annotations function in Youtube at certain points of the vid. Otherwise, this is just a timelapse video. Don't expect people to want to read the description while watching the vid.

Also, it's kind of blackmail to ask for enpugh subscribers or you won't make vids. If you want subscribers, just make good content and the subscribers will come.

  • Thanks for the annotations suggestion, bro/website.

I was going to find some time to do a voice-over but this is actually more convenient for me, and i'm surprised how easily the interface works with the vids.

    * * I will blackmail whomever I please, my good chum.
