I take it this works with the similar principal that Roland incorporated into their recent sampler SP range. ? I notice you have a foot controller or switches, are these triggers? very nice
Its your voice really that is the instrument, other air keyboards are a bonus also.
well controlled. Must have taken some time to set up each song ?
@johamiltongown what about for the Gown Films 1 and 2? the same panasonic? Your cinematography is brilliant, I identify with it so much. It's in the details. It's just so so beautiful.
As a keyboard artist, I'd say this is a great piece of kit for performance sake only. I can see where it would unlock different creative ideas, but not for close to $1700US.
Technology will show in the next 5 years how this price will come down and even more amazing controllers are built. As to an Eigenharp, have one, don't use it much, the learning curve is steep and creating music is more of my interest, than mastering a new piece of technology.
@bArT8472 I think there is a difference between 'coolness' and being artistic. I understand where you are coming from but it would also be easier to have a full backing track which sadly a lot of "artists" resort to these days. Surely the easiness of that makes it less interesting? When I was listening to this song on Spotify on my phone I just reminded myself of "Oh yeah that's the one on the air piano". I just think it adds a layer of depth/interest and looks quite different when you see it.
Don't see this as being too useful. It's just looks cool and that's it ;) Much easier to play the same part on normal keys or the triggering in the first part on pads + modulation wheel / a MIDI expression pedal.
@AndrewGmusic Explain, how does it not make it better to have it simpler to play? Cause if it's just the 'coolness' of having a custom instrument, I'm not buying that explanation.
Just to reiterate an earlier response on this - while it's true that technically you could do everything Jo plays on a keyboard controller, Jo says she wouldn't have created the same piece of music (Alive, alive, which she wrote on the Airpiano) on anything else, as it suggests a different way of connecting together sounds in space. She adds that it 'feels' completely different to perform without touching anything, esp. modulating filters and volumes (very different to using eg mod wheel).
wonderouswork Jo just checked out the new website where I found this keep up the good work and I hope to hear from you on reverbnation soon enough- Spank The Chemical Christians
Woohoo! That was lovely! The AirPiano looks like a lot of fun to play, but it must be very tempting, when you start getting a bit excited, to do a little hand dance on it. Big fish little fish in C minor. Wonder what that sounds like...
Not to say anything about the music; Jo, this tune and the performance are absolutely stunning and beautiful!
But the air piano seems like just another gimmicky controller for software synths - it's unclear whether Jo is playing both the guitar and the AirPiano at the same time at around 5:35 - if so, that's pretty rad, but I don't see anything else that couldn't have been done with a standard keyboard style MIDI controller - it's all flash!
We've discussed this; while it's true that technically you could do everything she plays on a keyboard controller, Jo's view was that she wouldn't have created the same piece of music (Alive, alive, which she wrote on the Airpiano) on anything else, as it suggests a different way of connecting together sounds in space. She also says it 'feels' completely different to perform without touching anything, especially modulating filters and volumes (very different to using eg mod wheel).
What an intriguing video and performance from a great artist. I can't wait for Jo intimate performance at The Songwriter's Cafe on 15th July which we will be running out live. She's promised to bring her air piano for that gig. Delightful to see Jo surrounded by such creative forces, Jon Cotton of course, Director Ben Lister and the wonderful DoP Chris Keenan.
This is a truly wonderful video! I love the way the story unfolds. As for the instrument, what a magical way to project sound- I can't wait to hear more from Jo :)
Certainly beats air guitar... can't wait to see it in person... looks like it should be on the bridge of the enterprise... Spock would be impressed... lovely sounds as well. Keep it up Jo, good luck... Jon

what kind of camera did you use to shoot these videos?

@meghanafarrell The Berlin footage was a little Panasonic HDC-SD1 on a Steadicam Merlin - the performance footage in the 2nd half was a Canon 5DII.

This is more interesting than the Eigenharp in my opinion. The eigenharp just looks ridiculously complicated to me with so many buttons.
