Nicht schlecht gemacht. Mich stört lediglich der Begriff "352 Aerial Kills", denn das impliziert, dass er 352 gegnerische Piloten getötet hat. Tatsächlich hat er 352 gegenerische Flugzeuge abgeschossen und mit Sicherheit haben etliche Piloten den Abschuss überlebt. Erich Hartmann wurde meines Wissens nach ebenfalls 14 Mal abgeschossen und hat überlebt.

Even Hitler himself admitted in 1942 that he had underestimated the production capability of the USSR.

The "productive capacity" of the soviets is one of the great fictions of the War. Without the equipment supplies by the US and GB the soviets would have been forced out of the war. For example the soviets received almost 500,000 trucks and 10,000 aircraft from the west.

He was not only an outstanding pilot, he was "THE" honorable officer even when he could escape from russian captivity. Instead of flying to Germany as ordered, he escorted a treck of refugees savely against the attacs from czecks and handed them over to the americans. Sadly, they handed Hartman over to the Soviets, as agreed between the Russians and Americans. LAter, during pilot training in the US, his instructer verified, there is nothing left that we could teach him. What a noble comment.

I doubt if history will ever see the spectacle of such a pilot again. In WW2 you had relatively small numbers of professional, highly educated and courageous pilots fighting against overwhelming enemy odds. Hartmann was the product of an educated family with a physician father and a mother who was an amatuer pilot.He was an avid sportsman and award winning skiier.He felt his duty to fight for his homeland as a patriot(regardless of whether it was judged bad now in hindsight). Where is he buried?

@365fg no he wasn't, he was never shot down. His plane got damaged I think 14 times but mainly by debris because he attacked from such close range and got hit by his own victim's aircraft parts. I think he has made forced landings but never shot down.

That is actually not true. He was hit a couple of times, and once was even captured by the Red Army! He escaped from the truck they were carrying him in, by pretending to be hurt (shot in the stomach) and when the guard left the back of the truck he jumped out and ran off. "The Blonde Knight of Germany" (his biography) documents many such amazing encounters.

I saw that nickname "Bubi" in an article when I was a boy. Let these old warriors alone & be in peace. You are their heirs so act like it. While our country crumbles everyone sits around with their thumb up their ass. One thing: we must never have a blood letting like WWII again. A social-political movement organized to make our people proud of what they are. Other races no problem. And here so many people cannot envision cooperation but it can be easily done while maintaining their tribe.
