It's amazing how things change. Look at the part when she exits the stage door. I can see only two fans with cameras. Nowadays there would probably only be two fans *without* cameras!
i'm glad all these old news reports are online, because a lot of people now have forgotten how absolutely huge madonna was
she broke new ground
it's taken for granted nowadays when a lot of singing-dancing-acting artists today cross from one medium to another, but crossing over just wasn't done back then and madonna was both lauded and punished for the attempt.
these days you're almost expected to be a multidimensional celebrity: a perfume, a clothing range, records, dancing, costume changes
Mamet wrote her role "flat" purposely. That's how he often (but not always) writes his female characters, it's part of his distinctive style which is more understood now. So I would give M a pass on this one.
It only takes six weeks to become a Broadway Star? Sign me up at the neighborhood method acting studio! Madonna can be a very good actress--when she is able to put aside her ego of being a superstar and risk letting the world see her as the character, not as herself the pop star. "D.S.Susan" is an example: She was relaxed and organic, but when she did "Shanghai S." she was more self-conscious and gave a wooden performance because she tried too hard to create an uptight character.
I saw this on Broadway with Madonna when I was 25. I thought she was not very good in it, also. What I notice here is how she used to have that sort of low class sound to her voice, before she became British, lol.
Funny. I remember recording this off of television. I actually got to see her in this play. It was great to see her, but it wasn't the same because she had brown hair. It just didn't seem like the the "Madonna" I was used to.
Great late 80's footage from Entertainment Tonight...wow Madonna was only 29 years old when she performed this play. Thanks for posting...keep the videos coming!
She's no actress. Sounds like she's just reading the script for the first time.

Mamet - Brilliance. Shear brilliance. He benefited from the glitz of Madonna - as he did recently with Piven...

Notice Jackie O. at 2:52.
Madonna was dating JFK Jnr at this time, and was dismayed that Jackie didn't come backstage after the show to meet her.
She broke up with him soon after.
