why were you taking off such small pieces??? shoulda done the 6 foot or body height measurement technique. climb down to where your feet were then notch and drop.
The odds are NOT in your favor. Sooner or later when you have an accident you'll wish that you had a helmet and kept two hands on the saw. There are TOO many accidents involving professionals to not follow standard, trade accepted safety practices.
Ask you wife/children/parents/hunting buddies if its OK not to follow accepted trade practices. Let them read the death statistics for tree workers before they make a decision for you.
Head gear can save you if you kick out and slam into the other tree, can avoid head tramma from kickback...lots of reasons to keep it on. And you only need one arm to do tree work, so keep on one handing that saw...LOL.
Once there is no more overhead danger in the hot Summer days I sometimes take off the helmet and send it to the ground. Helmet is on the ground. What is going to fall on my head when I've already got the tree top and all the limbs off? The sky? You'll never see a professional like me use two hands at all times. I can handle the kickback. Been doing this 14 years. Why do other Arborists / Climbers always have to talk shit about others?
@knoxtreeninja its to bad that in 14 years you didn't learn to sharpen saws, helmets aren't just for stopping things from falling the stop your head from bashing off the peg if you gaff out. and if you think you can handle kick back with one hand the have at it, because it will never happen to a "professional" such as your self anyway...
we talk shit because maybe 1 in 100 will listen this trade if vertualy new (50 years) and ever changing and its hard to get recognized by the governing bodies that be when people refuse to follow simple saftey rules
@knoxtreeninja what if those pieces your snap cutting break off the wrong way and tip back on your head? climbing helmets are not just for top impacts but side as well. check out the new petzl alveo. its sooo breaths and you will never know its on your head.

I can sharpen a saw and my saw is always sharp. Why does other climbers always want to talk shit to everyone else? I'm still alive and uninjured after doing this work for 14 years every day!!!!!!!!!!!
frigging amateurs!!! go take a course and learn about protective equipment and how to do things safely or you'll be dead in no time.
