The one I caught about 30 to 35 years ago was 20 inches long but I'll bet it weighed 12 pounds which is different then what was said in this video, I caught quite a few in little mahoning creek in indiana county Pa when I was a kid we always let them go without hurting them (they were so cool).
Ummm... can he breathe while being held out of the water?.. Anyway.. my dad used to catch these as a kid in central Ohio in the 1930s.. As a kid in central Ohio in the 1970s I could never find one. Habitat loss and pollution.
I'm confused. They have no functional lungs, yet they have nostrals and a great sence of smell. Can someone explain this is more detail for me please?
@ThePaleHorseman5 Good question! The nostrils are used for smelling, but not for breathing. Its really interesting because this means hellbenders show a step on the evolutionary ladder between breathing through the skin and through the nose/lungs.
Vanessa, thanks for posting these videos. I really learn a lot from them and I am glad that someone is using youtube for everything its worth. I am looking forward to all that is to come from you and this channel. Thanks again for sharing, keep up the good work!

What a great video. However, why were there so many birds singing on September 21st? It would be pretty quiet on that date here in Idaho.
Thanks
