@tdomhan: Today X11 and Xorg-server had to be upgraded, that's what was needed. :p So when X11 reaches 7,6 and Xorg-server is at 1.8.1 you will have actual multi-pointer/multi-touch support. Imagine a game like original Serious Sam 1. Split-Screen PC game. Two mouses(or wiimotes) one for each player LOL.
Last I checked, there isn't a multi-touch-capable KWin branch. We've had a Compiz branch with multi-touch support sitting in git for a while now. Also, some of the more interesting things can't be done in KWin because they don't have a plugin for them, namely Freewins.
Cool, but i am tired of multitouch-show off with water effects WHEN it is about a track of cirkular waves. Microsoft Surface is impressive becuse the wave-track is linear. I hope you understrad what i mean.
I don't. We'd have exausting arms because we need to lift it all the time. I like laying my arm on the desk, with my mouse in the hand. Try holding your arm straight forward for half an hour, you'll know what I mean.
Not that I hate multi-touch, but they should make a multi-touch monitor that you can lay on your desk, and has support for your arms on the sides of the screen.
Well I would like it just for fun to play around with. But when using Adobe CS4 and programs similar to that I would have to use a mouse and keyboard. But I would like it just to mess around with.

In kernel?
Is there any other way the linux kernel can get trashier?
It already have a awful design, with it's dynamic loaded monolithic kernel instead of a neat microkernel alike set of interfaces for a optional user space device drive model.
What next? Embedded full feature X11? Qemu for cross arch compatibility?
The maintainer team behind linux have lost their minds, accepting so many code, which by nature will behave bad, into such important piece of code that many are dependent.
But that's the beauty of the Linux community...accepting code at first, if it's useless/harmful, people remove it. It's a system of checks-and-balances.
Actually, whether it's monolithic or micro-kernel depends on the distribution. For example, Ubuntu devs compile all optional drivers as external modules that load on demand, while I've compiled my Gentoo kernel to be monolithic, with all the features built-in.
Because of this, your argument holds no weight what-so-ever. If the kernel's monolithic, it's because someone else BUILT it that way because they PREFER it that way.
Doesn't matter if it is loaded as a module or not. It still will run within the same huge address space, with unrestricted access to the machine. Which is what characterize a monolithic kernel, being able to load and unload pieces of code just make it possible to use the same kernel (compilation) on several machines without having unused drivers resident in memory.
I also use gentoo when I have to use linux, but I prefer the KLD approach instead. Udev, hal, hotplug makes life much easier and save you from keep tracking of devices in files like fstab modules.d and alike.
Letting you focus in what really matters, what you was going to do, not computer maintenance.
I actually do use haiku! Almost as my everyday desktop, if wasn't by my macbook with OSX.
And I also study the minix code along with my Tanenbaum's Minix Book. And I love it! Perhaps someday when I finish collage I will use both codes and a lot more from freeBSD (all being under liberal licenses) to build my own uKernel OS!
no you need a multitouch-capable tablet, although if it's anything like the windows drivers you might get laggy multitouch support, but it won't be like the real thing..
I don't think that to add multitouch support in kernel is very big problem, i think more serios problem is make multitouch displays' cost not so big like today...
For me it's not useful at all. I mean it's so much more time consuming as it is with using a mouse. And not comparable to using a keyboard in the terminal.
Mouse never replaced the keyboard. Touchscreen won't replace mouse. It will be just an addition, and in many cases it is better than mouse, but not in general usage.
thanks for the reply, and thanks for the video, looks awesome! I did find some blogs showing how to compile with the NextWindow driver. great to see multitouch in the hands of more and more people. especially the diy community, can only lead to good things.
Looks great, but one question, how come theres a mouse pointer @:41seconds that rotates with the window? Are you rotating real windows or rotating images to show it as a prototype?
it's kubuntu isn't it ? ?
which version ?

@Crouton351 oh, of course not, you'll just have to reverse engineer whole hardware to write proper drivers, but who cares, way to go, Gentoo!

I can't think of any right now anyway. Maybe someone in the future will come with some application that needs multitouch.

Looks kinda slow?
0:42 looks so slow, while resizing/rotating that image later looks rather smooth.
I hoope this will be good :>
Planschkuh44 2 years ago
being slow on 0:42 is only because of animation parameter set a bit more than it should be.
It is then modified to get fast zoom/rotate.
