  • it's kubuntu isn't it ? ?

    which version ?

which tablet did u use ?

do have a link or so ?

  • @MisterPubichair this is an old video.

    Look at ubuntu maverick video.

Many tablets are supported or being supported now :

    ntrig, magic trackpad, wacom etc...

  • Would it be so hard to get an iPad, jailbreak it, and install Gentoo on it?

  • @Crouton351 oh, of course not, you'll just have to reverse engineer whole hardware to write proper drivers, but who cares, way to go, Gentoo!

  • check out my Linux channel people! nothing but Linux and Opensource Goodness! :)

  • Ohhh snap!

  • compiz + multitouch ^- ^

  • Go penguins!!!!!

  • that would be awesome with a larger screen, but still looks cool

  • i got asus eee pc 1000ha elo touch installed cant seem to get it to work on linux ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 im jealous

  • @1momerat99 Sorry, I'm almost sure, but these netbook screens they sell are not multitouch...

  • mt on linux...nice :D

how much work had to be done in order to get multitouch working?

  • @tdomhan: Today X11 and Xorg-server had to be upgraded, that's what was needed. :p So when X11 reaches 7,6 and Xorg-server is at 1.8.1 you will have actual multi-pointer/multi-touch support. Imagine a game like original Serious Sam 1. Split-Screen PC game. Two mouses(or wiimotes) one for each player LOL.

  • cool.

  • Awesome, I can't wait to get a tablet PC. (Not iPad, mind you)

  • тормознуто

  • What kind of computer is that?

  • Comment removed

  • @cantormath I used a multitouch tablet from Stantum, that I connected to my laptop.

  • now get this onto the ipad ;D (fuck apple) lol

  • more importantly what computer are you using

  • what distro are you using

  • You're clearly using KDE here, so is it possible to use this with Kwin's effects rather than Compiz?

  • Last I checked, there isn't a multi-touch-capable KWin branch. We've had a Compiz branch with multi-touch support sitting in git for a while now. Also, some of the more interesting things can't be done in KWin because they don't have a plugin for them, namely Freewins.

  • Well, here's the funny question: Aside from looking nice... what's that for?

  • Vive les enaciens !!!! C'est du bon boulot :)

  • Cool, but i am tired of multitouch-show off with water effects WHEN it is about a track of cirkular waves. Microsoft Surface is impressive becuse the wave-track is linear. I hope you understrad what i mean.

  • ok so when will we see this availble for Ntrig Digitizers on Linux? Hopefully it will be VERY soon.

  • this is awesome i hope this is available in the coming ubuntu there is like 6 days left now right

  • haha good one

  • maybe if the top half of your head is missing.

everything is 'hard' when you first pick it up.

  • I'm searching for a developer.

  • LINUXXXX LINUXXXX ...shouting on top of my voice ....hehehe...

  • Nice. I hope we will able to replace mouse with touch.

  • I don't. We'd have exausting arms because we need to lift it all the time. I like laying my arm on the desk, with my mouse in the hand. Try holding your arm straight forward for half an hour, you'll know what I mean.

Not that I hate multi-touch, but they should make a multi-touch monitor that you can lay on your desk, and has support for your arms on the sides of the screen.

Now tháts what I want :)

  • Then don't use the touch screen lol. I'm pretty positive you can still use a keyboard and mouse

  • And I'll gladly do that :)

And what about you? Would you like it?

  • Well I would like it just for fun to play around with. But when using Adobe CS4 and programs similar to that I would have to use a mouse and keyboard. But I would like it just to mess around with.

  • I agree. There aren't many things that would actually benefit from multitouch screens I guess...

I can't think of any right now anyway. Maybe someone in the future will come with some application that needs multitouch.

  • @Jarige2 - Imagine that... technology cool enough that it may yet get geeks to physically move (more than a mouse)! ;-)

  • LINUX ROCKS!!! WHOOOOHOOO! :D

  • Great Work!

  • I wonder if this works as well with KWin as it seems to with Compiz...

  • all i gotta say is BAD ASS!!!

  • Can't wait for this.

  • But that's the beauty of the Linux community...accepting code at first, if it's useless/harmful, people remove it. It's a system of checks-and-balances.

  • Actually, whether it's monolithic or micro-kernel depends on the distribution. For example, Ubuntu devs compile all optional drivers as external modules that load on demand, while I've compiled my Gentoo kernel to be monolithic, with all the features built-in.

Because of this, your argument holds no weight what-so-ever. If the kernel's monolithic, it's because someone else BUILT it that way because they PREFER it that way.

  • Doesn't matter if it is loaded as a module or not. It still will run within the same huge address space, with unrestricted access to the machine. Which is what characterize a monolithic kernel, being able to load and unload pieces of code just make it possible to use the same kernel (compilation) on several machines without having unused drivers resident in memory.

  • I also use gentoo when I have to use linux, but I prefer the KLD approach instead. Udev, hal, hotplug makes life much easier and save you from keep tracking of devices in files like fstab modules.d and alike.

Letting you focus in what really matters, what you was going to do, not computer maintenance.

  • I actually do use haiku! Almost as my everyday desktop, if wasn't by my macbook with OSX.

And I also study the minix code along with my Tanenbaum's Minix Book. And I love it! Perhaps someday when I finish collage I will use both codes and a lot more from freeBSD (all being under liberal licenses) to build my own uKernel OS!

  • now I'm glad my laptop died, time for an HP touchsmart I think!

What was this demo done using?

  • what version of linux is that?

  • great work!

    keep it up! :D

  • L1nux Rulz :)

  • so does it works with any touch screen?

  • no you need a multitouch-capable tablet, although if it's anything like the windows drivers you might get laggy multitouch support, but it won't be like the real thing..

  • ha!! don't try to cheat us! That's not the "water effect", that happens on all LCDs when you hit them! XD

Now seriously, how do you resize/rotate the windows? I had a plugin called FreeWins that did that, but stopped working.

  • Comment removed

  • Looks kinda slow?

0:42 looks so slow, while resizing/rotating that image later looks rather smooth.

I hoope this will be good :>

  • being slow on 0:42 is only because of animation parameter set a bit more than it should be.

It is then modified to get fast zoom/rotate.

  • I don't think that to add multitouch support in kernel is very big problem, i think more serios problem is make multitouch displays' cost not so big like today...

  • What's the hardware?

  • it's a Stantum smk-15.4, the team also provide drivers for Mitsubishi DiamondTouch, and Ntrig based screen (dell latitude xt and hp touchsmart tx2)

    see their website.

  • Can someone tell me the name of this song?.

  • There is a link at the end of the video, go there and download the song (it is free, it is from the jamendo website)

  • For me it's not useful at all. I mean it's so much more time consuming as it is with using a mouse. And not comparable to using a keyboard in the terminal.

  • Mouse never replaced the keyboard. Touchscreen won't replace mouse. It will be just an addition, and in many cases it is better than mouse, but not in general usage.

  • Should be better in time. ;)

  • I just hope they don't release it until it's better.

    Great work tho.

  • I understand what are you saying but in the true spirit of open source if you're brave enough and you want to help with the testing you can use it ;)

  • damn awesome

    there's nothing like this

  • Excellent work guys... now we can have those Windows 7 features without paying MS for them!

  • It even works with WinXP, although it's unofficial.

  • Its just a theme.

  • Very very good!!

  • Sweet!

Microsoft and Apple should be scared!

  • @Frap357 those both compnies did that you know..... and also he plugged in something to his computer thats why the lunux iss doing that

  • @Frap357

    :))))

  • thanks for the reply, and thanks for the video, looks awesome! I did find some blogs showing how to compile with the NextWindow driver. great to see multitouch in the hands of more and more people. especially the diy community, can only lead to good things.

  • Looks great, but one question, how come theres a mouse pointer @:41seconds that rotates with the window? Are you rotating real windows or rotating images to show it as a prototype?

  • The mouse pointer is stationary, hes dragging his right index finger over it several times.

  • i owe the team a beer :p

  • Impressive!

  • Holy sh*t, that's great! /me wants
