I have a question for you. I collected an Acacia last spring from my back yard. I have him in a pot since march 2011. He lost his leaves in November but since I keep him inside he started to bring out new ones this January. And after watching your video I realized that the soil I used is not good at all. The drainage is not good and there is mold on the surface on the soil. What you suggest should I re-pot him? Could you help with a soil mixture? Thanks a lot
@gasparsandormarton Maybe re-potting so soon will be too much. It's easy to grow trees in bad soil, just watch your watering intervals and only water when dry JUST before the leaves begin to wilt. Give the tree a chance to recover for a year or two before knocking it back again.
Graham, this is an excellent video, and very helpful. Thank you! Question: I just bought a bougainvillea bonsai (2 years old) last week, and I can tell it was not planted in the proper soil. The plant is defoliating like crazy, and I'm afraid that it will not make it until spring so that I can repot it with the right soil. Would it be safe to repot it now (in the early fall), or should I keep my fingers crossed and hope that it makes it until spring?
Hey, i just got a bonsai tree from a shop and the soil is like completely covered with fine-thread roots, is it possible to just remove some of the roots and repot it in the same pot? And is it a good idea?
Can you only re-pot the bonsai in certain times of the year? It's just hit summer here and I wanted to know if i could put a tree i bought from bunnings into a bonsai pot? I've got sphagnum moss and bonsai soil.
Hey Graham yet another nice video of you keep them going especially for young enthusiast starting people like me. But I got a question about my olive (Olea Europea) it is growing very nice but in order to make it's trunk thicker I wanna let it grow for a while. But when is the right time to do this because it keeps it's leaves then entire year? And how does a olive tree react to root pruning? I heard olives can't bear roots being cut away very well.
Depends how big and thick you juniper is and the size of your pot. You should do it when the entire pot is full with roots try to pull it out and you see the shape of the roots like the pot as you can see in the video.
Graham, can I repot an indoor bonsai now? i live in the same climate as you , my bonsai is chinese elm and it has a lot of new small buds everywhere plus i kept it evergreen through the winter. Will repoting now will damage my plant? P.S. my plant is well established and the roots have completely established in the soiL
Great video, very helpful tutorial Now that Spring is here, I can repot my jade trees, but do the rootball trimming properly. I noticed much less growth over the past two years, but still need to find akadama soil.
Certainly have to agree with @graycam, although as a total newbie, I would've like to have seen how you put the holding wires on the roots. Thanks, Graham, for taking the time to make such a good video. Although it's just coming into Autumn here in Australia, I'll be back to watch this again before South Hemisphere potting season. Cheers, mate.
Sorry to ask but your accent made it hard for to understand but what was the name of the "paste" that you put on the roots?

@janir321 In my experience with these keep VERY dry over winter and re-pot mid summer, not when dormant.

What prevents the tree from getting too big? Is it the cutting of the roots or the trimming of the branches? Could you bonsai a redwood tree?

Hi Graham,
Do you advice to repot all deciduous trees just as the tips of the leaves begin to open?
Or is this just for Acers?
I have a Japanese White Beech (fagus crenata) that needs repotting this year.
I live in the northern part of the Netherlands, so I guess the climate is similar to where you live.
Thanks for all your vids, advice and your enthusiasm on bonsai and trees in general !!!
deasan 1 year ago
@deasan Yes I have found trees recover from this work much faster if you wait to see signs of life in the buds.
