This is why surgical counts are so important. I've gotten into arguments with surgeons when the count was incorrect, with them insisting that a sponge can't possibly be in there. Guess what, it almost always is. We do 3 counts..one before surgery, one while they are starting to close, and one while they are on skin closure. It is very important that the circulating nurse advocates for that patient, even if the doc gets pissed.
