good comparison. One thing to note...the Roland pdx8 (or any pdx) has the piezo sensor under the Roland logo, which is at the 6:00 position on the drum, not in the center. So the closer you hit to that, the louder the sound is. I don't know about the others, but that's a pretty important caveat that many people overlook. It's a great pad overall though
We're considering electronic drums for our small studio. We've come across the Pearl ePro Live-drums and wonder if you have any opinions on these. Also, we use Addictive Drums in the studio and would like to know if the ePro Live will work well with AD. Thanks.
Hey guys, THIS IS NOT A SCAM. I'm selling my simmons sd7pk kit with everything and plus I'm throwing in some free items with it. Its a great deal and if your interested, please contact me by email. Ill give you the ebay link and everything. PLEASE GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT IF YOU WANT TO BUY A GOOD ELECTRONIC DRUM SET. my email is theconsumer1@gmail.com
I have played it for six months now, and I am using one or two kits only. It is like playing on an acoustic kit. Although all kits are editable and new samples can be loaded from a PC/Mac editor. It sports 3 zone chokable cymbals (in the vid!), dual zone pads. With 4 gig onboard memory and alternating samples (no machine gun effect) you can´t go wrong. ;-)
Thanks for the video. Looks like I'll be going with the middle one.. it seemed to be the best for me. Loved the comparisons of the many different aspects of the drums (and not just the sounds). You should make more videos like this for other drum-related stuff (like cymbals!).. you're good at it. I like that your video is very professionally done and the sound is all properly equalized so my speakers dont blow up. A+ vid, thanks again!
I'm not a drummer but I have since a long time ago want to get a electronic drum kit.
The reason is that I want to use it in my home studio to record drums on my own songs but also for practise so I can be better at drums, but it's not for live performance.
The only thing I know is that I want mesh heads at least on the snare drum.
Extemely helpful, thanks alot. I'm looking into switching from accoustic to electric drums, but cost is an issue. Which of the three are the cheapest? I really like the mesh heads, as far as I know.
Also, how much do electronic drums depreciate in value? And do I need a new set every 5 years or so like a computer, or do they last longer then that?
@PacisVictus Sorry for the delay, and thanks for the questions!
Cost for any of these kits is worth whichever model you go with, IMO. It all depends on what you like. Mesh - bouncy, rubber - less bounce, real head - like acoustic kit.
If you are using VPT software like BFD, Superior Drummer, or Addictive Drums, Steven Slate Drums, etc. you shouldn't need a new kit unless something breaks! The software is where it all comes from. Just update and enjoy!
I welcome you warmly. I have a small request. I bought a Alesis dm 6 to my home studyjka, no, and I would like to use with EZ dummer in Cubasie 5. I have E-MU 1616 PCI m. However, I have no idea how the drum set after the USB cable. welcome, please help. thanks how to install usb device system is the name of the e-drum or as if the system detects a perk. but Cubase and dummer ez detect nothing. maybe you have a tutorial? VERY VERY PLEASE HELP thank you!
@Santimartigarri Ummm... 'best' is a relative term. I do believe that everyone has a 'best' but it's not the same for everyone. Alesis kits are VERY inexpensive, which could be best for someone. Do they trigger the best? Not necessarily.

New open sound architecture kit, 4GB onboard memory with full editing via PC/MAC, chokable cymbals, alternating samples (Not present in any of Yamaha or Roland drum sets) ..
As you can see I just got my kit, and I love it!!!
I would not recommend mesh heads for no other reason than that the are a tad quiter. After having played on mesh heads with one of my previous bands for some time they are nowhere near the feel of an acoustic drum - way too bouncy. Rubber pads have more fidelity in that respect. I'd would like to see a new comparison with the new yamaha TCS-system, which probably would beat all of them in terms of playability, feel and triggerhappy-ness.
I'm planning to buy an electric kit. I'm not that good at drums yet so I have to practice a lot, however I can't get an acoustic kit becouse of neighbours and noise level.
I have the money for a Roland TD-4KX or for an Alesis DM10 Studio kit. Which one would you recommend?
i would use addictive drums and fl studio, the problem is i dont know how to make it work with addictive drums... if someone has any kind of tutorial or tell me what to do... i would appretiate it ALOT (sorry for my english im french

I'm a guitar player / home recorder and recently got an Ion kit to to learn drums so I could put my own beats down for my songs (also using EZdrummer software). I have found that I am progressing OK (I surprised myself)! and really want to upgrade my kit. I'm looking at Alesis DM10 studio / Roland TD9 s.
The Roland is a great value as it comes with the TD9 module (a 1000 dollar unit if purchased separately) but I'm going to check out the Alesis kit if the hi hat pedal works OK.
I'm looking for an e-drum for a professional record (Classic Rock), what do you think is the cheap e-drum I have to use?? (of course one e-drum that i could connect to my laptop, because I think the sound that I can make with the supperior drummer are the best)

The thing I have a challange with is the stick play on the cymbals, and hi hat. The transition from open to closed on the hi-hat is very tight, with very little range in between, making it difficult for a lot of hi-hat nuances. I also have a challange with swells on the cymbals, especially using the edge. I have been looking at the higher lines, (v-pro, etc) with a td9 or td20 module, hoping that would fill in the gaps. The new pearl epro got my attention, but not sure which way to go. (part 2)
Thanks for the info Mikey! Great demo's on the different heads. You definatly got my attention when you started talking about the drum software. I am fairly new to electronic drums, and have a roland td3. I like the mesh head on the snare (a must for me), and dont mind the rubber pads for the toms, as I dont do as much stick work on the toms. (part 1)
Very informative vid, thanx... There is one other thing I would like to see; which module to go with. Not a comparison of the sounds that it comes with but how well they work with drum softwares. Number of trigger inputs, ease of use with the software etc...
I've been seeing a lot of people getting off the epro kit and not really being excited.
The idea is there, but Pearl really didn't hit the mark on any one aspect. It's a Pearl Export kit (cheaper), a DM10 module (Not really new), Smartrigger Cymbals (Nice, but not new), with marketing that mimics RET Percussion (Go figure).
I don't know how it will sell, but it's a good idea. I just isn't connecting with people.
You think so? I played it... and it doesn't feel bad... but you're paying a LOT for an export kit, a DM10, and the Smartrigger cymbals, don't you think?
have u seen the alesis dm10 studio kit, i understand that the alesis dm10 pro kit looks way better, and a lot better for gigging, or transporting it, because of the clamps on the rack, but the alesis dm10 module has more sounds, more kits, but the roland has better quality sounds, im probably gonna get the alesis dm10 studio kit some time by the end of the year, if u have any questions, comment/mssg me back,i did lotsa research about it, and those were the 2 best kits i found, money wise
@MikeyVPT thing is the e pro is big like a drumset and whats great about regular electric drums is that they're smaller they take less space and what i do is i mix it into my acutic drum set to get cool sounds
@MikeyVPT Thats true.. Thank God i got mine for only 2,000$ at a music convention. So if you combine the export kit for about $800, the DM10 module for $700, and the Smarttrigger cymbals for $190 (crash), $260 (ride) and $250 (hats). that all equals to $2200. Good deal for me :)
@MikeyVPT I thought this, the problem with the pearl is also that it's not particuarly small either and the big advantage of an e-kit for live bands as well as home studios is space. I'm considering the DM10 at the minute, do you have any thoughts on the pads for that kit, in comparison to say the RET pad featured there?
@gothrowsome2a what if you don't have money? :) Seriously, what could one expect to pay if they just want a verrry basic set-up. No fancy computer stuff or so on. Should I just get that dorky one for Play Station's Rock Band game lol? I only play for fun and I need a set to make a work-out for me. Btw, do these elec. drums make noise when the elec. is OFF? You know, are they silent when you just bang on em while no elec is on? Don't want to bug the neighbors or the hub! Thanks.
@gothrowsome2a The E-pro is good, sounds are fantastic, but the stick noise on the e-pro is really really bad...thats lethal for a ekit since the #1 requirement for an ekit is the 3am apartment practice sesion...e-pro can not be played at 3 in the morning in an apartment (paticularly is you get the more expensive metal cymbal version)
@gothrowsome2a Some people need an electronic kit because they don't have enough room in their house, thats where the e-pro is horrible. Otherwise, why not get an acoustic kit?
this is more practical than a old drum.... but.... i think that the old drums r bettter.... with the time this kind of drums will be high demand.... greetings! and Happy new year!
hey can u help me out i am thinking about getting a new drum set i am think about getting the Alesis DM5Pro Electronic Drum Set with Surge Cymbals or the Alesis DM6 Electronic Drum Set witch one would you you get ???
Well, as you can see, it doesn't trigger the software all that well only because it wasn't BUILT for software... it was meant to be used with modules. The modules that are paired with the rubber pads only really have about 7 velocity layers.
The mesh pads have always been module pads. The original RET drums were, too... but then they upgraded the triggering technology from the Natural Series, to the Virtual Percussion Technology trigger plates to work with drum software about 3 years ago.
Setup helps, but as you can see, I tweaked all the drums myself, but it doesn't catch all the notes. There's always more that you can do for that, though.
i didnt think there was much 'technology' in the pad itself i thought it was mostly just a piezo into the module and all the velocity stuff was in the module
(piezo would pick up on things like velocity, but not some of the complex stuff we see in snare pads so i guess it doesnt really make sense)
but if it reacts properly with the roland modules it should react just aswell via midi-out shouldn't it? or is it just that it only works good with roland's modules' midi-out?
The easiest way is to use the Learn function. All you have to do is select a kit piece and press your "L" key on the keyboard, then hit the drum or cymbal you want it to be linked with.
Actually, you can adjust the tension of the mesh head, so you can adjust how much "bounce" do you want. I think the mesh is quieter than myler. And yeah, the rubber is the suckest one
BTW, there is other new invention electric drum head from Yamaha. They called it "Textured Cellular Silicone Head". It's from Yamaha DTX950 and DTX900
i really didn't even realize that these existed...probably can tell that by my videos...really need to find someone that understands and uses this...great job explaining it...I learned alot <3
also i've noticed mikey i had pd-8's for toms and my hands would get to start hurting after about 30 mins or 1 hour of play, i upgraded to pd-80 mesh pads. and then i never got that anymore
Same here. I had a TD-3 kit a loooong time ago, and it would zap my energy REALLY quick. The mesh, for me, doesn't offer enough substance, but that's my personal feel.
I don't know... I feel like I'm waiting to hit a drum head but I'm playing right through the mesh. I do like it, but it doesn't quite feel like my acoustic kit.
I love my RET kit in the studio but, I don't even feel that TRULY feels like an acoustic kit. There is that tiny bit of delay that makes playing to a click a little bit harder. (Yes I do have a Presonus Firebox). You can get the latency down to "almost" nothing but never truly nothing.
yea...this is true...the only way to get over this is to come out with a module that will upload the samples into itself to carry around and play directly from the module itself....Alesis DM10 perhaps? wasn't there a mention that BFD and other software companies allowing samples to be used real-time without latency?
I have a natural 2 ms latency which I don't feel TOO much. It isn't zero latency overall, but the firebox that I have doesn't add any latency.
The DM10 does hold some samples, but with it's really tiny onboard computer chip, it OVER compresses the samples into module sounds... it's not worth it. One day we'll have REAL samples in a box. My mini netbook will do for now ;-)
mini netbook? which one do you use? and how much ram do you have in it? does it have a firewire connect? it'd be AWESOME to use a netbook...small footprint...more portable
Hey, you got it. Just trying to give some fair advice. I think it's obvious that I use certain kinds of gear, but this video isn't for me, it's for everyone, ya know?
I'm glad I found this video. I'm trying to get into VPT but I don't have a drumkit or an electric keyboard. is it possible to use addictive or EZ using my laptop keyboard?I've already asked this question on the respective forums.
Hey Mikey this is a very awesome work from you. I feel that more videos of this kind should be made by users, so that everybody can really know what to expect from the different type of electronic drums out there. Oh and by the way, very nice chops :D.
superb ! very explanatory. Liking it

I have also been recommended for this set:
Millenium MESH HEAD / MPS-600 E-Drum
I want to play connected to the BFD 2 in Cubase because what I have heard the drum modules who follow the electronic kit is not so good.
What should you recommend between those two sets?

jdogdaddy 2 years ago
The thing I have a challange with is the stick play on the cymbals, and hi hat. The transition from open to closed on the hi-hat is very tight, with very little range in between, making it difficult for a lot of hi-hat nuances. I also have a challange with swells on the cymbals, especially using the edge. I have been looking at the higher lines, (v-pro, etc) with a td9 or td20 module, hoping that would fill in the gaps. The new pearl epro got my attention, but not sure which way to go. (part 2)
jdogdaddy 2 years ago
Thanks for the info Mikey! Great demo's on the different heads. You definatly got my attention when you started talking about the drum software. I am fairly new to electronic drums, and have a roland td3. I like the mesh head on the snare (a must for me), and dont mind the rubber pads for the toms, as I dont do as much stick work on the toms. (part 1)

Very informative vid, thanx... There is one other thing I would like to see; which module to go with. Not a comparison of the sounds that it comes with but how well they work with drum softwares. Number of trigger inputs, ease of use with the software etc...

good point, but you cant say its not promising, it looks nicee
gothrowsome2a 2 years ago
e-pro looks like junk. You can tell Joey Jordison and Dennis Chambers don't look thrilled when they test it out. RET is way better bang for the buck
Zildjian528 2 years ago
@Zildjian528 But Joey always has a black stare.

@MikeyVPT
i think you just need a real size bassdrum and toms to destroy pearl´s kit. Will you do something like that?

TheGioSurfer 1 year ago
outdated, if you have money get the e-pro from pearl, it feels like playing a real drum
gothrowsome2a 2 years ago 5
You think so? I played it... and it doesn't feel bad... but you're paying a LOT for an export kit, a DM10, and the Smartrigger cymbals, don't you think?

@MikeyVPT
Have you tried the Alesis DM10 set? I want to start playing drums and i can't decide if i should get a Roland TD4-KX or an Alesis DM10.
Alesis looks more professional. What do you think is the best?

@runescapeownyawe
bit much for starting off?
you should get alesis dm6 , it's good enough :L

have u seen the alesis dm10 studio kit, i understand that the alesis dm10 pro kit looks way better, and a lot better for gigging, or transporting it, because of the clamps on the rack, but the alesis dm10 module has more sounds, more kits, but the roland has better quality sounds, im probably gonna get the alesis dm10 studio kit some time by the end of the year, if u have any questions, comment/mssg me back,i did lotsa research about it, and those were the 2 best kits i found, money wise
gibson00000000000000 1 year ago
@MikeyVPT thing is the e pro is big like a drumset and whats great about regular electric drums is that they're smaller they take less space and what i do is i mix it into my acutic drum set to get cool sounds
ryanandbranslurppiss 1 year ago
@MikeyVPT just with that sexy wood finish
drummerboy7227 1 year ago
@MikeyVPT Thats true.. Thank God i got mine for only 2,000$ at a music convention. So if you combine the export kit for about $800, the DM10 module for $700, and the Smarttrigger cymbals for $190 (crash), $260 (ride) and $250 (hats). that all equals to $2200. Good deal for me :)
Erxjo8 1 year ago
@MikeyVPT I thought this, the problem with the pearl is also that it's not particuarly small either and the big advantage of an e-kit for live bands as well as home studios is space. I'm considering the DM10 at the minute, do you have any thoughts on the pads for that kit, in comparison to say the RET pad featured there?
sonicwingnut 6 months ago
@gothrowsome2a what if you don't have money? :) Seriously, what could one expect to pay if they just want a verrry basic set-up. No fancy computer stuff or so on. Should I just get that dorky one for Play Station's Rock Band game lol? I only play for fun and I need a set to make a work-out for me. Btw, do these elec. drums make noise when the elec. is OFF? You know, are they silent when you just bang on em while no elec is on? Don't want to bug the neighbors or the hub! Thanks.
julieswahn 1 year ago
@gothrowsome2a The E-pro is good, sounds are fantastic, but the stick noise on the e-pro is really really bad...thats lethal for a ekit since the #1 requirement for an ekit is the 3am apartment practice sesion...e-pro can not be played at 3 in the morning in an apartment (paticularly is you get the more expensive metal cymbal version)
Stormsea1 1 year ago
@gothrowsome2a Some people need an electronic kit because they don't have enough room in their house, thats where the e-pro is horrible. Otherwise, why not get an acoustic kit?

hey can u help me out i am thinking about getting a new drum set i am think about getting the Alesis DM5Pro Electronic Drum Set with Surge Cymbals or the Alesis DM6 Electronic Drum Set witch one would you you get ???
skater0025 2 years ago
it seems like the rubber one has really terribly velocity sensitivity, seems like it only has 2 or 3 levels, is this true?
jian2069 2 years ago
Well, as you can see, it doesn't trigger the software all that well only because it wasn't BUILT for software... it was meant to be used with modules. The modules that are paired with the rubber pads only really have about 7 velocity layers.
Good ear and good question!
-mikey
MikeyVPT 2 years ago
ah okay, but technically so were the mesh pads and RET kit weren't they?
is it something you can fix with setup?
jian2069 2 years ago
The mesh pads have always been module pads. The original RET drums were, too... but then they upgraded the triggering technology from the Natural Series, to the Virtual Percussion Technology trigger plates to work with drum software about 3 years ago.
Setup helps, but as you can see, I tweaked all the drums myself, but it doesn't catch all the notes. There's always more that you can do for that, though.
-mikey
MikeyVPT 2 years ago
Ahh okay, thanks.
i didnt think there was much 'technology' in the pad itself i thought it was mostly just a piezo into the module and all the velocity stuff was in the module
(piezo would pick up on things like velocity, but not some of the complex stuff we see in snare pads so i guess it doesnt really make sense)
but if it reacts properly with the roland modules it should react just aswell via midi-out shouldn't it? or is it just that it only works good with roland's modules' midi-out?
jian2069 2 years ago
how do you midi map in addictive drums
freestylefilmsinc 2 years ago
The easiest way is to use the Learn function. All you have to do is select a kit piece and press your "L" key on the keyboard, then hit the drum or cymbal you want it to be linked with.
Easy!
-mikey
MikeyVPT 2 years ago
Actually, you can adjust the tension of the mesh head, so you can adjust how much "bounce" do you want. I think the mesh is quieter than myler. And yeah, the rubber is the suckest one
BTW, there is other new invention electric drum head from Yamaha. They called it "Textured Cellular Silicone Head". It's from Yamaha DTX950 and DTX900

I've been up to a lot of drumming & having fun as usual!!
I have been using Ocean Way Drums quite a bit too.
Have you checked out Toontrack's new Custom & Vintage yet? I have it & it's great! I've always wanted to have some of that vintage sounding stuff !!
Keep up the great work Mikey!
Take care,
Kim :)

also i've noticed mikey i had pd-8's for toms and my hands would get to start hurting after about 30 mins or 1 hour of play, i upgraded to pd-80 mesh pads. and then i never got that anymore
jennafan14 2 years ago
Same here. I had a TD-3 kit a loooong time ago, and it would zap my energy REALLY quick. The mesh, for me, doesn't offer enough substance, but that's my personal feel.
It's all about freedom of choice!
-mikey
MikeyVPT 2 years ago
what do you mean by substance just wondering
jennafan14 2 years ago
I don't know... I feel like I'm waiting to hit a drum head but I'm playing right through the mesh. I do like it, but it doesn't quite feel like my acoustic kit.
-mikey
MikeyVPT 2 years ago
I love my RET kit in the studio but, I don't even feel that TRULY feels like an acoustic kit. There is that tiny bit of delay that makes playing to a click a little bit harder. (Yes I do have a Presonus Firebox). You can get the latency down to "almost" nothing but never truly nothing.
PlanetGemini 2 years ago
yea...this is true...the only way to get over this is to come out with a module that will upload the samples into itself to carry around and play directly from the module itself....Alesis DM10 perhaps? wasn't there a mention that BFD and other software companies allowing samples to be used real-time without latency?
dpaik360 2 years ago
I have a natural 2 ms latency which I don't feel TOO much. It isn't zero latency overall, but the firebox that I have doesn't add any latency.
The DM10 does hold some samples, but with it's really tiny onboard computer chip, it OVER compresses the samples into module sounds... it's not worth it. One day we'll have REAL samples in a box. My mini netbook will do for now ;-)
-mikey
MikeyVPT 2 years ago
mini netbook? which one do you use? and how much ram do you have in it? does it have a firewire connect? it'd be AWESOME to use a netbook...small footprint...more portable
dpaik360 2 years ago
Hey, you're just too tall. If you were two feet shorter there wouldn't be any latency, 'cos that's how long it takes for sound to get to your head!
Or is that what you mean by 'natural' latency?
mailjeh 2 years ago
i understand. well i mean its gonna be about probably another year before you will get totally acoustic feel. and it will be expensive i suppose

Hey Mikey this is a very awesome work from you. I feel that more videos of this kind should be made by users, so that everybody can really know what to expect from the different type of electronic drums out there. Oh and by the way, very nice chops :D.
