Steven Ambrose said he walked that highway and concluded that was the key failing of the whole operation --the narrow and highly elevated highway made the plan impossible to succeed.
Sean Connery looked like the real commanding General in the movie. He was tall and had the same broad shoulders. I think that was a main reason for them picking him for the part. The 101st had a lot of bridges to cover and evidently the Band of Brothers weren't in the vicinity of the Son Bridge.
@1916jutland I don't think they could of stopped artillery shells, unless they planned to use their rifles as bats to hit them back at the Germans. Or make a human bridge.
"uh, Look here, I'm awful sorry, but I'm afraid we're going to have to occupy your house." Thats a nice introduction if I ever heared one, not to mention the poor man didn't speak a word of english.
The guy from M*A*S*H* was not quite on par with the Gist of the movie. Michael Caine, on the other hand protrayed a Great soldier. Connery, well it is hard to shake the Bond thing. Connery was unfortunate to play a commander with such anxioty. But someone had to play this guy. I still don't like One major thing... Communication between those in command are juvenile at best. War in the Pacific was worse. Communication and Logistics - that's the key to Peace & War.
@freakyold I cannot see who your talking to but I'm guessing its either an Anti-British, American (theres a few of them) or a frog..? I guess we are resented because of our history, you know colonising so many countries, inventing many things, having a vast empire things like that. I love to hate the haters, but this time... Leave them to it. Fail.
I love the British with their umbrellas and hunting horns.

I think the best one liner of this part was the yugoslavian colonel's line: "Shit..." Classic.

I'm actually surprised the events at the Son Bridge didn't make it into the Band of Brothers chapters dealing with Operation: Market Garden

The "umbrella" scene was based on Major Allison Digby Tatham-Warter. Tatham-Warter was
with the 1st Airborne, who won a DSO for his courage at Arnhem.
He was the inspiration behind the character of Major Harry Carlyle in "A Bridge Too Far".
Tatham-Warter said "he carried the umbrella and a bowler hat, because he could never remember
the password, and it would be quite obvious to anyonethat the bloody fool
carrying the umbrella and a bowler hat, could only be an Englishman".

Was it a trap or were there Germans on the other side with the TNT?
