it does have a purpose i just dont know how to explain it , mutes the rest of the strings when he is hammering on / pulling off with his left hand , if that makes sense , makes it much cleaner

theoretically you couldn't have explained it much better. You are exactly right. I think, however, besides for cleaning up legato playing, It is a bit of a stage move because I would say that the pro's don't do that in the studio. You are right though.

I would say listen to into the fire. The drums are ballistic nearly the entire time other than the acoustic part. I have never seen any Firewind shows (god I pray to) But I am sure maybe they do a little soloing on all instruments. The keyboard/harmony guitar has some "ear-gasmic" melody influenced solos too.

Dragonforce has nice guitar work, but it only sounds faster than it is because of the drumlines. Firewind, on the other hand, did it right. Gus G is an excellent guitarist (he's played in quite a few bands before).
