This was conducted by Marc Minkovski et les musiciens du Louvre in 1997. It was a highly acclaimed performance at Salzburg Festival with Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra.
From the Salzburg Festival! I actually like this production more than the M22 one from 2006 (and having Malin Hartelius as Blondchen is a luxury, too). Anyhow, Christine Schäfer is a wonder. This aria is a lot more murderous to sing than it sounds. And I love Minkowski's conducting, too. :o)
Ms. Schäfer has a nice 'ring' to her voice. Bright warm sound. She sings this aria with some additions. Quite a 'Tour de force'. Though she sometimes let her tone 'slide' to much. 4/4
Christine Schäfer studied with Arleen Auger, and her entire performance, in both this aria and the complete opera, must be taken into account. Auger was phenomenal and much missed, and Damrau, too, is excellent. Schäfer is versatile and courageous in her choices.
Damrau is excellent, but there are lots of excellent sopranos--the late Inga Nielsen, for one--who do this role, often under ridiculous directorial concepts. It's not a competition for me, I happen to enjoy Christine Schäfer and she is my personal favorite, but "best" is a completely subjective verdict, and I'm sure Damrau is the best in your hearing, and again, I agree she is excellent. Best wishes, Tana.
Christine Schäfer is a genius--and so brave. There are many charming things in this particular production, Schäfer first among them, but it's idiosyncratic, to say the least, and the singers are not served well by the director. But CS makes the best of it, and her best is sublime!
She took my breath away, and filled my eyes with tears - truly a brilliant performer!

Completely agree with you about maestro Minkowski. I adore his work on the M22 *Mitridate, re di Ponto*.

Yes I love Damrau and I find that she's the best Quenn of the night and Konstanze...
Anyway I love very much a lot of others Operasingers... For Instance I think that Roschmann is better than Damrau as Pamina...
But for Mozart's coloratura I think she's the best living soprano!

She's okay, but she doesn't compare to Arleen Auger or Diana Damrau.
