Nolan Ryan is a very good pitcher and also an excellent role model. However, I don't think he is in the top 10 for a pitcher you would want for game 7 of the World Series or the #1 pitcher you would want to sign. The positives we all know. The negatives: Poor fielder (he give up a lot of unearned runs some his errors compared to others) many stolen bases and of course the walks and wild pitches. For his long career he gave up a half run less then average very good but not great.
@fadethetrade Or top ten. Or top 20. The goal of any pitcher should be to consistently win. Ryan wasn't the top pitcher on his own teams to do this, much less the top 3 all-time.
A crappy pitcher can win 20 games on a given year because their hitting supports it.
Pitchers with lower E.R.A.'s are always considered "dominating".ANd a strike out type pitcher with the lower E.R.A. is the most dominating in history,Kourfax,Seaver,Clemens,Martinez, and for 2 periods for a few years,Randy Johnson.I would throw in Maddox with 18 gold gloves. These are the greatest ever, and their E.R.As were under 2.25.
@fadethetrade I consider the pitchers you listed all to be better than Ryan. By a lot. Maddux isn't a strikeout pitcher by any measure, but in his prime he was as good, or better, than anyone in the modern age. I'm not sure what the 2.25 ERA is about. During the prime years they may have been close to that but not for their careers. Like collins, I believe he is a worthy HOFer, but not near the top. The End.
@modeo92 I counted a 5 yr. stint on my greatest list.If you look at the E.R.A.'s in their best 5 yr era,all of them had an average under 2.25.
Koufax,Maddox, and Pedro! had the magical arms in history for a less then 5 yr.period(Maddox was the greatest fielding pitcher since Kaat `(Maddox had 18 GG's!) but long enough to consider them in the top 5 of all time! Randy Johnson was unique in pitching history by having an 18-2 yr.(your interest) and Johnson had two 5 yr stints instead of 1.
300 strikeouts2 times to go with this . I did my research and only found Koufax a little more dominating. Maybe maddox for a 4 yr period was dreadfully difficult to hit.And most were ground outs.Unless I missed someone,;list his credentials in a 5 yr period that matches or beats koufax or martinez.
@fadethetrade Yeah, I heard some analyst recently saying he thought Pedro may be the greatest pitcher ever (it could've been "one of"...I think I was half paying attention) and I rarely think of him. But yes, that's definitely a great run and he's frequently overlooked.
@modeo92 I still think Koufax gets the greatest in a 5 yr stint. He was remarkable and today would have been very marketable,he wouldnt have thrown his arm out either. But would that have been detrimental to his amazing stats!? Maybe BECAUSE he threw so intense gave him those stellar, second to none, pitching numbers in modern baseball. But Ryan was the greatest on more occasions then any other pitcher in history.7 no hitters speaks for itself!
@modeo92 I remember the few times I saw Pedro and never thought about how dominating he truly was in baseball in that period because I was too fixed in and focused on the yankees "best team ever" mini dynasty from the late 90's thru the early 00's. But like you,I never gave martinez his credit and damn! He'd be my second starter on the all time list!(next to Sandy)
@fadethetrade One more thing. I don't rule out ERAs or think they're unimportant. I just thought Ryan would have great games followed by mediocre ones. So his ERA could be misleading. But then I managed to find though searching "nolan ryan (year) pitching game by game logs" most of his years, start by start (yes, I have way too much free time). It's really tough to make any blanket statement about him and his teams. There too many things to get into here, but it's worth checking out.
So to wrap things up, I don't think being on the Yankees would've brought him any more kudos. His every start would be judged much closely. But like I said, he would've made him a more consistent winner. Or not.
I don't think it would affect Ryan stress-wise had he pitched on the Yankees. But his erratic pitching would be scrutinized more than anywhere else. And where with the Angels and Astros I'm guessing he was probably left alone regarding his weaknesses, with the Yankees he may not have gotten away with it. He would have to work on his control (even if he...gasp...wouldn't strikeout as many) and other parts of his game.
Being on the Yankees has good and bad points. On the positive side you get tons of publicity and New York fans love a winner. On the negative side you get tons of publicity and you never hear the end of it if you lose a couple games in a row. Many pitchers have been successful elsewhere and then get chewed up when they hit NY. Fans won't care about his strikeouts if he walks a bunch and gives up 4 or 5 runs and loses.
@CEO1451 If you wanted to see a game with a lot of strikeouts and walks and a possible no-hitter, Ryan was your guy. If you wanted to see a dependable ace get a win, he's very far down the list. Most exciting pitcher ever? Yes. Best pitcher ever? As previously stated, he wasn't even the best on the teams he played on.
@CEO1451 He also was a terrible fielder (.895) and bad at holding runners on. His poor all-around game played a much bigger role in his mediocre winning % than the teams he played on (other pitchers did better after all). The thing is that he didn't need the Yanks to be the most heralded pitcher of all-time. He was voted by fans as the best pitcher of the 20th century in 1999. So you're far from being alone. I find it laughable but people get enamored with k's and nono's and ignore the rest
@collins444 CEO is so baseball illiterate that he thinks being on the Yankees would've countered all of Ryan's many weaknesses. But the Yankees then weren't the Yankees now. They didn't make the playoffs every year. In fact, in the 27 years that Ryan pitched the Yankees made the playoffs a grand total of 5 times. And the teams Ryan played on? 5 times. So much for the many more wins. It's kind of fitting that the Yankees made the playoffs about as often as Ryan was the ace of his own team.
@CEO1451 If he played with the Yankees anytime between '77 and '85, Ron Guidry would be the ace of the staff. The problem with Ryan wasn't the teams he played on. It was the fact that along with being amazing in certain categories like strikeouts and no-hitters, he was awful in other more important categories (in terms of winning more consistently). He as the all-time leader in walks by a lot..50% over the next guy, Carlton..that's just awful...all-time leader in wild pitches...9th in hitbatsmen
@CEO1451 If he played on the Yankees with Seaver or Tanana or Scott, he'd be the second best pitcher on the team. EVERYBODY could compare their results and see he was not the ace of the staff.
Greatest ever? Yeah...right. He wasn't even the best pitcher of the teams he played on. In the years he played with them, these pitchers were better than him.
Tom Seaver (and others) on the Mets had a better ERA and winning %,
Frank Tanana on the Angels had a better ERA and win %
Mike Scott on the Astros beat him as well.
He had the best overall record and ERA for the first three years on the Rangers, and didn't for the final two.
He is a worthy Hall of Famer, just not near the top.
