In reading some of the comments of those surprised at how caring Oscar was during this. You must remember, Oscar ALWAYS had a soft spot for Maria (aka "Skinny"). So seeing her get married and have a baby was a big deal even for him. She was probably the closest friend he had on the street. She tolerated his grouchiness the most. He'd be "grouchy" for her and therefore would call to congratulate her.
Northern Calloway (David) left the show shortly after this episode and then passed away on Jan. 9, 1990 after a decade-long struggle with bipolar disorder. He apparently had a very troubled life. : (
That's too bad, for a great human character on Sesame Street along with the other guys; Louis, Gordon, Bob, and Mr. Hooper, when was still around. I really liked David, and wish the actor of him didn't die. Well, he and Jim Henson are in Heaven. Same with Mr. Hooper. I know Old School Sesame Street vol. 1 and 2 are on DVD, which are the first 8 seasons. I hope the episodes from the 80s make their way to DVD. Same with the remaining seasons of The Muppet Show; seasons 4 and 5.
I haven't seen this one since the day it aired...I love how Oscar is being his normal grouchy self but calls the hospital to talk to Maria. How sweet.
I chose to rewatch this episode today because I'm having the same experience. Yesterday, a longtime family friend gave birth to a baby, and we're all thrilled. I almost feel like an uncle, since that whole family has been such a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
Judging from the date, this was one of the last Sesame Streets I ever watched (because one of my friends told me that Sesame Street was for babies. I was six). I stopped watching the year this episode aired (which just happened to be a few months before Jim Henson's death).
I think I vaguely remember the hospital scenes. Maria sure is bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for having just given birth.
Does anyone have a sesame street clip of when gina was adopting her baby boy named marco?, So if anyone has that clip, or has an old sesame street clip of when susan and gordon was introducing the people to their adopted son, miles, so if anyone has those two clips, would you please upload them.
this is the real deal right here..all them upcomming kids television shows on channel 13 is 2 modern and 2 new school..theres nothing like a old classic sesami street
Oscar was sure grouchy in the first part of the video, but I think I could be grouchier still. He ruined it by congratulating Maria in the end. I'd rather hold a cat than a baby.
Those of you who want to find out what really happened top Nothern Calloway should read the "Streetgang: The complete History Of Sesame Street" book! It will shock and surprise you to know what rally happened.
I hadn't known about Maria's baby because it happened after I stopped watching Sesame Street in the early 80s.
I love the whole thing about Oscar being happy, excited, and caring toward Maria and the baby. It's funny as hell that he breaks down his grouchiness and calls Maria on the phone at the end!
I never saw this before--and it's fitting because it aired right before I was born! :) My mom was getting ready to have me, and they were excited because it was happening on Sesame street too. (I have an older sister who was 2 when this aired). Thanks for posting! I never thought I'd see a character on SS flip out like Gordon did.
That's one thing that really separates the old Sesame Streets from modern educational TV. Like with Gordon here, the characters didn't always act completely calm. Maria was especially good at expressing normal human emotions like frustration, I remember.
@italianman1992 It aired right before I was born too, and my 4 year old sister was watching it!! Difference is she persuaded my parents to name me after the baby. My full name is Gabriella Maria Rossetti! :)

The writers probably would have pursued it if Northern Calloway was in good health. However, he was very ill with stomach cancer at the time, and as a result, the writers weren't sure whether or not Calloway would either die or resign and they would have to write David out. As a result, they paired Maria with Luis, and in hindsight, they made the right decision, because after this episode aired, Calloway left the series and he passed away a year later.
I just read the book Street Gang, about the history of Sesame Street. He did not have stomach cancer, he was mentally ill and died of a seizure in a psych ward.
Death of Mr. Hooper, Wedding of Luiz and Maria, and the birth of Gabriella, the circle of life is complete. (But maybe not in that order. I'm not sure.)
The writers were slick with this one. "I could feel the baby coming out of me...." There's no stopping a kindergartener from asking mommy for the specifics. I guess they figured they would set up the discussion and the parents would take it from there. heh.
This video took over 15 minutes to save in WMM. I would've had to wait longer if there was more footage. I'll be happy to post them as seperate clips though.
If you had any Gabi stuff between 1993 and 2006 to upload that will be great, not everything. Thanks

MarshalGrover, could you upload Gabriela scenes from Sesame Street from 1993 to 2006?

@KatieCadet1 Yeah, 'cause that's not a burdening task at all.

"Hey, Oscar! You up?"
"Get lost... "
"The baby came. It's a girl."
"..."
And what happened then
Well, on the Street, they all say
That the Grouch's small heart
Grew three sizes that day...

Does anybody remember the PROMISES the Cable Companies to us when they first came around in the late 1970s and early 1980s? We were PROMISED:
1. MORE VARIETY. Channels for every interest. Sports, Movies, Nostalgia, Mysteries, Westerns, Science-Fiction, etc.
2. LESS COMMERCIALS (After all we were PAYING to watch these Programs.
30 years later and what do we have?
100s of Channels that show THE SAME STALE PROGRAMMING, INFESTED with 20 to 28 Minutes of Commercials Per Hour! :(
