  • This is my favorite version of this song

  • I remember watching Letterman back in the late 80's when I was a stupid metal teenager. I'm not sure which times but I do remember seeing Warren & thinking "Wait, I like this.Who is this guy?". I'm 40 now and have most of everything he ever recorded.Very sad that he's gone.I'm sure he had alot of great music left in him. I have no idea what happened to those ol metal tapes, but Warren's music is always close by these days.

  • Oh for the days when Letterman was less of a dick and Zevon was still alive.

  • First song was called Trouble written by Leiber - Stoller, made famous by Elvis.

  • Not many know that the first part was an Elvis song

  • Send @RayBeckerman , Guns & Money !

  • aaah. nothing compares. thx for sharing!

  • what year was this show? just curious...

  • thx ,,,..die ,the good he was 1 off.m

  • The opening bars Warren plays is called "I'm Evil" not "Trouble" it is a Roy Buchanan song.Great stuff either way!

  • @jinxedt13 it's called trouble, dude!

  • Gotta love anyone who sings, "Bring lawyers, guns and money..."

  • Bet Warren could wallop the Teabaggers and just about anyone else he chose to...RIP, Warren, and Rock On!!!

  • Haaaaass

  • He's got a Chevy Chase countenance

  • Thank you for sharing this. I did not understand and appreciate this talent when I was younger. This is just balls and bliss. Genius.

  • yes too that my musical brothers

  • I hope they serve beer in heaven, 'cause I want to buy this Los Angenlo one some day.

  • love this song its really cool

  • What a voice! I mean a unique American "voice" in the literary sense. Miss him.

  • Zevon is a genius. So is Frank Zappa.

  • Only saw him a handful of times. But one particular solo acoustic/electric set will stay burned in the best part of my memory banks eternally. The music never dies; it goes on....

  • Wish Warren was alive today; would love to hear his musical commentary on the current political state of affairs. Bet he could wallop the Teabaggers with a zinger or two ...

  • 01:38 = Cool as fuck.

  • great voice. so many folks owe him for their songs!!!!

  • god i'd forgotten, thanks!!

  • Paul doen't have a mullet here, all of his scalp jusd slid back. RIP WZ the shit has hit the fan, more likely, it's about to!

  • he will be missed in these days of the tea party politics who will answer the call to logic?

  • Great!

  • In true WZ style, he sang "shit" and took the bleep, God bless him.

  • The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long

  • The World's most Dangerous Band!!! I still remember that from being a very young child and watching this with my dad. CBS Orchestra is a lame ass name. And of course, Zevon forever!

  • love the guitarist's giants jacket - brill

  • Dave used to have the best musicians on his show. Some great artists made their network TV debut on Late Night/Late Show. For the last few years now he has had a lot of mediocre indie bands that we have never heard from again. Plus he has Regis on singing sometimes! Yuk.

  • It must have been hard for Letterman. He was giving his best friend a valediction.

  • @tbdonnelly67 how is he saying farewell? do you mean validation?

  • @sheepdog191 Nope! Valediction = farewell.

  • WE MISS YOU WARREN ZEVON

  • I love you Warren Zevon! I've been singing your songs since I was 4 years old. RIP . The greatest singer/songwriter to ever walk the earth!

  • The gr8 Bill Evans said ther gr8'ness of music came from performers being true to their energy.....Warren Z always plays true........cubed......

  • o m g .i missd this one. guess i'm down on my luck!

  • RIP WARREN

  • ahhh the simpler days of the cold war

  • W/ Artie Fufkin jammin on the keys.

  • If you loved Warren Zevon, YOU MAY REALLY LIKE US.

We're an Americana band from Arlington, VIRGINIA.

  • Goddamn best seque ever!!

    :)

  • I think that NY Giants sweater belongs in the rock n roll hall of fame

  • @duewey14 love it

  • RIP WZ, you were one hard living man." I got a 38 special up on the shelf, If I start acting stupid I'll shoot myself"

  • Love this song and Warren, rip babe. You were a hard living dude.

  • Warren deserves to be in the R&R hall of fame

  • LMAO, Werewolves of Lima. That almost would make more sense.

  • If nothing else, I'd love David just for his love of music & his musical tastes. I miss Warren & will always miss him. My favorite Warren memory is when I took my sis to see Warren Zevon in the early 90's. She didn't know who he was. I sat next to a guy who had his ears stuffed with cotton balls. I asked the guy if he had ear problems. He said "No. I always have to do this for heavy metal concerts." He was serious! Warren played the piano for most of the night and I still laugh today. Great post

  • @MyMoppet52 ""No. I always have to do this for heavy metal concerts."". hehehehe. That's a classic.

  • Oh...1988. Nevermind :)

  • What year is this from?

  • Paul shaffer was rockin the fuck out!

  • @dosomethin888 hell yeah!

  • Great!!! watch?v=-f1Ai8J1vJY

  • What a brilliant dark sense of humor - "caught the crew making a suicide pact".

Had the chance to meet him near the end of his life at the hospital and he was asked if he needed more pain meds, he quipped, "no, but i'll take it to go" . Still ahead of his time!

  • @7777srd Usually when people tell celebrity stories on the internet they're bullshit. In your case though, that is exactly what he would have said, so I believe you.

  • How great was that?!?

    What year was this?

Paul's combover vs bald... Vote now:

  • Warren Zevon my music hero. once heard NEVER forgotten..Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.

  • @oscarslovechild1 Great song

  • @oscarslovechild1 Great song....what is the line..."that son of a bitch Van Owen blew off Roland's head...."?

  • @ewoldt

Yep thats it. Have a look at Disorder in the House, Zevon, The Boss and Ry Cooder its great :)

  • Fabulous, simply fabulous, Warren was REALLY a genius!

  • nice Elvis intro

  • Zevon's music was awesome and the hall is a disgusting piece of shit as it is. R&R Hall of Fame my ass.

  • I know of 3 songs that have the word shit in them. Dylan`s Hurricane, REO`s Tough Guy, and this one. Any others?

  • @psakref Pink Floyd's "Money"....."don't give me any of that do-goody-good bullshit" and John Mellencamp's "Play Guitar"......"forget all about that macho shit and learn how to play guitar"

  • @ewoldt well done, sir!

  • @psakref

Eamon - I dont want you back

  • You Chumps realise that Dave nailed the Camera with his pencil on this take?!

  • Just a total legend

  • Comment removed

  • LEGENDARY INTO

  • @selfesteemdestroyer you wanna have their kids or something?

  • I hope WZ NEVER gets in the bullshit R&R HOF. They don't deserve him.

  • What a tremendous guy. I saw him play a gig in Miami at a book convention. Other members of the band were the great humorist Dave Barry and Steven King. Now thats a weird band. Send lawyers, guns and money. What else do you need?

  • Saw Warren Zevon many times in Houston & Austin through the years, always signed everything I had. I have a signed 8X10 in the living room of me & him in Austin after a show. Miss him greatly, and the r n r hall of fame is a joke.

  • Anybody recognize the trio backing him up? As with all his touring bands over the years, clean and tight.

  • The transition between the two songs is so badass! Zevon rules.

  • the guitar player has one ugly shirt. great song!

  • @tonnister Well I think the shirt looks pretty good on Sid, besides it's the GGGGGGGGGGGG-MEN, the best football team in the NFL!

  • my thoughts go 2 1963RRT

mate please tell me when letterman left our presence!!

cause thats news 2 me and 2 john9944

they were called the rock bottom feeders............there was a few of em in the group

  • Comment removed

  • the blues intro is cool. i think his music is some of the best.

  • @telecasterman081095 i hear that brothuh

  • Great clip. A great musician and a great talk show host.

Too bad neither one are with us any more.

  • Wtf letterman has hair?! Rip zevvon -3 his music

  • This is the guy. I once saw him play a gig with someone you would never believe in Miami.........Stephen King.....another member of the band was humorist Dave Barry. They didn't suck and there a lot of energy from both the audience and the stage. I think with lawyers, guns and money you can get out of almost anything. If you can't squirm out legally you can always buy your way out. If you can't buy your way out you can shoot your way out. If none of the three options work, you are screwed.

  • Ah the good old days Letterman gold.

  • Love Lawyers Guns and Money. Paul looks like hes having fun and enjoying it as well."

  • ..."THE SHIT HAS HIT THE FAN!" hes just right into the song when he sings aye! a swaggering beethoven, the thinking mans elvis, warren

  • nobody knows the year?

    thanks :)

  • @EPIhamuerto the copyright at the end says 1988, but im not sure.

  • saw them at Lincoln Center DC in 86 ,outstanding! will never forget that night. thanks warren RIP!

  • rip zevon legend

  • it was an honor to see him live back in 96 man, spectacular show, RIP Warren Zevon

  • fans of Warren Zevon might want to know that there is an interesting cover of Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner on Naomi Bedford's myspace

  • Here he transitions from Elvis Presley's version of "Trouble." When I saw him on this tour in a 400-seat club on Portland's East Side he preceded it with Tom Jone's "What's New Pussycat." Still the funniest musical segway I have ever seen in a live concert. The man had a wonderful sense of the absurd.

  • wtf pauls got hair?!

  • Why did it take me so long to get into Mr. Zevon's music? Does anyone have a recommendation on where to start for a studio album (or live album). Top 2 or 3 picks.. Thank you.

  • @toadbeacon Any and all of them, but his last studio Album "The Wind" is amazing, so many guest artist appear on it. Just simply amazing.

  • @toadbeacon If you're still looking, his first "real" album (the one titled Warren Zevon) has an amazing collection of song--"Poor Pitiful Me," "The French Inhaler," "Carmelita," and "Desperados Under the Eaves" are standouts, but they're all great. The last has one of my favorite couplets from any song:

If California slides into the ocean like the mystics and statistics say it will,

I predict this hotel will be standing until I pay my bill.

  • man what a song, what a performance of it, and what a terrific talent mr. zevon was,

he deserves the the rock n roll hall of fame induction, RIP

  • This is it!

  • Warren Zevon is so good. RIP buddy.

  • Sound is terrible on this video. I can hardly hear it.

  • @mrbobevans -- then turn it up. It's Rock 'n' Roll... only works right when you are blowing speakers ;-)

  • saw him in maine at a place called sugar loar mountain!!!! i think like 92-93??? about 600 people!!!! what a phucking show

  • what fucking year was this

  • It says this was 1988 in the last second, in the credits.

  • @LedZepHasDumbLyrics it's obvious....look at the bass player

  • 1988.

  • Thank you for posting this cliip.

  • gone too soon.

  • i guess most choose werewolves

    as wz' signature statement

    but for me

    it's lawyers

l,g&m will always be the coolest

song-melody-" 'tude" tune i ever heard

close race but lawyers in a photo finish

  • @JustAintthatWay Why you gotta talk in whole paragraphs?

  • everybuddy gotta talk some way bud

    just a habit picked up

    trying to work within youtube's

    500 character comment constraint

dont mean to annoy by it

    peace and over&out

  • I luv how Paul rocks out whenever big Z was on the show..

  • yeah me too paul is one groovy rockin cat

    and i mean that babe

i guess some dont dig shaffer's 'schtickola' but to me it's very cool

    and im not even kidding

i think his insincere sincerity (flattery)

(ala bobby bittman of sctv) is actually sincere insincerity

so it's legit on that level

    if that makes any sense

and the man knows his way around the ivories

    that much is for sure

  • Warren you are deeply missed! Honestly folks one of the best musical artists ever! RIP ~Till we meet at the bridge my friend..~D

  • awesome !

  • amazing..thanx so much for this video.the past week ive rediscovered the sentimental hygiene cd-any videos of detox mansion or bad karma around? 2 great songs....miss ya Warren, gone too soon.......

  • Brilliant people are always taken from us too soon.

    Love you WZ!

  • Was was COOL personafide

  • Warren doing Trouble! I love it!

  • what a great intereview

  • why? have some respect. paul is a great musician, plus hes married with childern. paul is awesome

  • @glazemeister paul is the dude whaling on the piano right? he's been on dave's show for years. seems like a cool cat

  • what year was this in?

  • the credits at the end say 1988

  • Deserves to be in the RnR Hall of Fame, if he isn't in yet.

  • @KultureJamCollective: he is not, and it is a discredit to the hall...

  • @KultureJamCollective He is

    At last!

Hooray for Zevon in the rock and roll hall of fame

  • @KultureJamCollective I agree. Not sure if he is or not...I'll have to look and see.

  • @Bllackguard666 Don't bother checking. Warren Zevon is not in the RRHOF but on a positive note, Abba is.

  • trouble was never recorded??

  • The waitresses here aren't "with" the Russians - they are, themselves, the Russians.

  • A lot of people always forget the impact Warren's songs had on everyone. Sometimes shocking, sometimes controversial, but always tinged with a little dark humor just so we can laugh at ourselves. A true American composer that will be missed.

  • He's sort of a Tom Waits meets Jerry Lee Lewis...in the 70's and 80's

  • tom waits is the lay man's genius

i don't at all get why people are nuts about him

maybe I should listen to all his stuff again to see if I'm just in a bad mood or something

  • zevon should be up there with dillan and young but i'm sort of glad he isn't.

  • you couldn't have said it better. however, in my opinion he IS up there with dylan, young, browne, petty, and all the greats. his music was just never bastardized by the popular culture; which is great, however it means he didn't really get the recognition he deserves. either way, he is loved by his fans, and you know he was never in it for the recognition.

  • what the hell is KID ROCK one who has

  • Great song..and so true!

  • Awesome kick in to 'Lawyers, guns,' !!!

    Kick ass version.

  • WZ one of the most underrated musicians in history..........what an awesome lyricist and man what a voice............WZ was the freakin man

  • your gay buddy.... fucking puppy

  • Great version. Zevon is way underrated.

  • Anton Fig can play any god damn thing he wants!!

  • Thanks my friend! best version of this one on the net!!!

  • PSS I missed one... I just caught the first performance of Roland on Letterman...and as expected, Paul blows a huge chord in the last verse, you can see Zevon FLINCH, maybe he named the album after him.

  • And finally 3. Watch Warren actually yell at whatever the fuck the guitarist was named as he misses the solo in Searching for a Heart. Learn an instrument and call me in ten years, puppy. And if you don't want your head so ripped off next time, try a nicer approach, and don't send me one way emails. Because somewhere beneath the misguidedness, you must have some redeeming qualities.,,since at the end of the day...we're both Zevon fans. Long live music greatest singer-songwriter!

  • Hey Cru 72, I would have liked to do this more amicably, but since you're calling me ''cleverless'' to start... OK puppy, you may have seen the shows, but I guess that you actually have to be a ''real musician'' to know the difference.

    1. Check out the ''night moves'' band actually bothering to learn the song, and kicking this version in the ass when Zevon did that show. 2. Listen to the Figg play the wrong bass drum pattern through Splendid Isolation, totally killing the groove.

  • your comments re wz and shaffer's band

    caught my eye

and so i cked ea vid you mentioned out

but didnt see what you did

fig doubling the kick okay maybe

but they rehearse b4 & wz couldve made mention shaffer's guys are total pros and would have obligd wz' preference

re wz yelling at sid i disagree calling out not yelling

re the nightmusic band tho totally agree

an amzingly combo & show sanborn had

  • Best singer-songwriter ever, but the house band (aside from Paul) let him down everytime he played Letterman by not doing their homework.

  • Cleverless, how can you say Paul and his band let Warren down? I saw Warren live 30+ times and I can't tell this isn't his BAND. I know every note, of EVERY Zevon song. and the ONLY songs Paul and his "ORCHESTRA" didn't butcher are Warren Zevon songs.

  • What kind of guitar is WZ playing? I can't get a good enough look to tell. It doesn't look like the Fender, and it's not a Jackson. Any clue? thanks.

  • Reply to my reply. Looks like it's a Hamer Californian. Sharp looking guitar! I like when someone plays something other than a Les Paul or a Strat. Nothing against those two, they are the foundation of Rock, but there are so many other great guitars to play/!

  • what an awesome voice.

    he's missed

  • Dave was close with Warren!

  • He gave Dave his guitar.

  • Television moment! That Paul idiot kept his mouth shut and just played

  • too bad he died too soon

  • Classic. Fantastic guitar riff and the chords are quite easy to play!

  • the tempo is off, but it's good. it's a little too slow.

  • this is genious

  • nice. back when real bands, with real talent played LIVE on late night.

  • i forget where i was reading a recent interview with letterman where he was talking about warren's last appearance on the letterman show... warren invited dave into his dressing room before he got on, and told him that he was dying, and gave him his guitar, and dave broke down and started crying right there in the dressing room. they had a good relationship on the show, and it's sad to see zevon go... but he was awesome, and this was an awesome performance.
