Ok....raised in San Antonio a few miles from China Grove at time this song came out. We rocked to it but none of us knew why the Doobie Brothers and a song about China Grove.
I think the years and heroin haven't been good to Tom, mostly the the heroin. The late night hunt for drugs 'rumor' is so much more believable than making up a song about a small town around San Antonio that just happens to be called 'China Grove'.
Such a great song but computer digital sound sucks sucks sucks. Who said things that go round and round are out of date. Back to CDs and vinyl records for me. How about you?
@camlpg , yo Dude. i totally agree, comuter dig sound does suck Btime. hopefully new CDs will come out on uncompressed 24bit 196khz Blu-ray soon. that will be sweet. Pink Floyd just released Dark Side again, on LP and Blu-ray, awesome....somebuddy does care bout sound! also Wish u were here. can't wait 2 check that out. :) tom
i remember when i was little and going to the store with dad and he would start to sing along with songs like this and now years later i find myself singing along when we go somewhere and maybe good sense of music is inherited or dad is smarter than i think :)

I hate how every top rated comment in just about every musical song is about how "x number people" and then proceed to talk shit about justin beiber. Think of something original.
@superdanificatione Take your baby puke and enjoy it. Music is a matter of taste. OK, this is lousy. Ask your teen idol who he likes. You would be shocked, little girl or little twink, whoever you may be.
I like Jay but a lot of there songs with him have similar chord arrangements. I much prefered the band when Michael Mcdonald and Jeff Skunk Baxter joined them and Johnson left.
I had this on 8 track and played it in my 68 camaro riding around on that 50 cents a gallon gas with a little blonde sweetie by my side. Songs and memories from the 70's are etched in my brain and will last forever. The greatest time in history to be a teen and have fun. We would do about anything to go up down or sideways and had a ball doing it. Go Doobies!
@hotstuffandicecream --- Had the same... only difference was I had a gorgeous red head next to me in my 68 Camaro... Craig powerplay 8-track and was INDESTRUCTIBLE!!! GO DOOBIES!
31 people never been to the Grove yet, and are probably Justine Beiber fans in which case they just don't know good music, and think that an epileptic monkey who knows a few english words is a music artist.
@TrixAnims1990 i don't get how you expect to be taken seriously when calling another singer "an epileptic monkey who knows a few english words". i don't like his music either but fuck chill out not everyone likes the same shit
@TrixAnims1990 Yeah no shit, look at the comment below yours. Do you not think when you comment? Like dude, this ain't the 70's, OBVIOUSLY music won't be the same. You people are really closed minded. I take it the 1990 is your year of birth, which I hope not because I was born in '91 and don't act like a child when it comes to music. If you don't like something, just ignore it. Mentioning his name just lets him know that he's on your mind. So really in the end, you're the fool, fool.
Yea, the good old days, when musicians had so much, erm, hair. Listened to that music for a while, then moved on. The new kick is the best, and few pass the test of time. This one... not.
Nearly blew the windows out of the car with this track. Heard the first few notes and turned it up really loud forgetting that the other side of the stereo kicks in after a couple of bars!!!!!!!!!! Won't forget that for a while....and thanks, the ears have recovered now.
Well...why would someone click "dislike" when all they had to do was move on to some other song they liked. The goofs wasted that energy...LOL...to click it. These songs were at a time when we had the best of times. Wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Except...didn't want to grow OLD...which I am NOT. I'm just 'experienced' and still 21. YEP...don't feel old at all. Rock lives on and on and on. PEACE
(1977) Had China Grove playing in my old Galaxy and went for more volume to jam wide open, went sailing into a curve, rolled twice and China Grove was still playing when it rolled back on all fours. I ended up in the back seat sitting there like what the Hell?. I still want the volume high but I have to leave out the Vodka.(True Story)
Saw the Doobie Brothers in Ann Arbor back in 77'. They were also going to play in Lansing, MI a couple of weeks later with some band called "Foreigner". Never heard of them (at the time) and couldn't search the net, obviously, for info on them. So, I opted to see the Ann Arbor gig where the Doobie's played with opening act "Commander Cody And The Lost Planet Airmen"

@Dadoodoo71 I agree, they went from being a totally cool biker band to a sappy pop band. I do think McDonald is a talented guy but not with the Doobs. That was Ted Templeman's idea I think
@Harryn58 Actually it wasn't. They needed a guy to fill in for Tommy, and Jeff Baxter suggested Michael McDonald. Obviously it totally changed their style. At the moment, they are playing better than ever, and have stayed with the original sound. They are probably one of the most consistent bands out there.
My grandmother used to live east of San Antonio near China Grove. We used to go through there all the time. I would start singing the song and my dad would be like "shut the hell up." He was a country fan, hated rock music.
wow he changed the lyrics I think its "and tho its a part of the Lone Star State, people dont seem to care, they' ll just keep on looking to the east"
they are playing our fair here in burlington in the fall...with lynyrd skynyrd! doobies were my very frist concert in 1976...cant wait to see them again!
What a great group, singing the song, that was to start my rock collection as far as albums were concerned--I was 13 and only had a few cassettes--and money was hard to come buy, but I could't keep playing the hits off The Captain and Me album forever at the pizza jukebox-that was getting too expensive, so I bought this first album, and did I ever play it--and today it still holds a special place in my heart, and I'll always love The Doobie Brothers just a little more than most! Peace, BobbyK
@noclassatall So you had nothing better to do than come to the vid of a classic rock song and show what a jerk you are, huh? your life must be boring. If ya don't like it, don't listen to it, babe. Go to the vids for songs you do like and leave those of us who love this one in peace.
My first rock album ever was the awesome THE CAPTAIN AND ME! Not bad for your first album at 13 years old! These guys will always be legends, and I don't think they ever sounded better than on The Wildlife Album from 1996! Peace and Love, BobbyK
michael mcdonnell sounds like a wounded moose I could never stand his voice.Makes me homicidal when I hear the moose sing.He is never a doobie bro. to me.Tom johnson is the only voice for them!
The talent these guys had was simply beyond what was happening at the time for most bands. That was confirmed when they went post TJ to Michael MacDonald to keep the machine rollin.
They made this song because their bus broke down in this small town in south central Texas. They gave a free concert that night in China Grove, Tx which Im proud to say I'm born and raised in! God I miss this genre, someone bring back that classic rock sound we love!
@utbrit5 I'm proud to say I'm from the south bay of the SF Bay Area. Doobie Brothers country! That's right, we are very proud of them and very pissed off they have not been inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. How many bay area people feel the same way???!!!!!

Been to two doobie brothers concerts, and they rocked it out of the ballpark both times!

My first rock album ever was the awesome THE CAPTAIN AND ME! Not bad for your first album at 13 years old! These guys will always be legends, and I don't think they ever sounded better than on The Wildlife Album from 1996! Peace and Love, BobbyK

The talent these guys had was simply beyond what was happening at the time for most bands. That was confirmed when they went post TJ to Michael MacDonald to keep the machine rollin.
vagentlemanjon 9 months ago
@vagentlemanjon story goes there manager threatened them if you don't play a commercial song we all are broke and they wrote China Grove
Syzygy60 9 months ago
They made this song because their bus broke down in this small town in south central Texas. They gave a free concert that night in China Grove, Tx which Im proud to say I'm born and raised in! God I miss this genre, someone bring back that classic rock sound we love!

@utbrit5 I'm proud to say I'm from the south bay of the SF Bay Area. Doobie Brothers country! That's right, we are very proud of them and very pissed off they have not been inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. How many bay area people feel the same way???!!!!!
