As opposed to questioning the "obscure" I would question the use of your term "Avant Retard" So who bares the brunt of that half wit joke?
The word "retard" is no joke.
Bennet's 'retard' remarks are offensive to a huge section of our society - equally as grim as the use of the 'n' word and BB's Shilpagate. Hate crimes against people with disabilities are on the increase, and sadly Bennett seems to think it funny to make such low level jabs. No wonder she questions the "obscure"
There is no use of such a term within this post. This video has been posted as I think the song is a masterpiece. But now you have brought it to our attention It seems only fair to discuss it....
I think it is music like this which opens people's minds to different genres of music made by different kinds of people; leading to a genre free appreciation of music; in turn, leading to a greater appreciation of people, regardless of their nature, race or disability. Music, especially of this kind breaks down all prejudicial boundaries and kills racism, it is the political correct who do more harm than good as far as I am concerned.
Any further complaints please go to the link I included to people like us. Don't point your finger at me and say 'your use of the term'. Thank you for your comment anyway. I think...
Vicki Bennett created the term "Avant Retard" to describe her style of production. I have worked in the social sector for people with learning difficulties for almost twenty years and have often heard that dark age term used as a cheap and deeply insulting comment. As a tireless advocate of herself as an artist she should know better.
Your suggestion that her term (not yours, but you did post her work so it's up for comment and you are quite right for not wanting to be directly associated to it) 'Avant Retard' breaks down boundaries of disability needs some justification.
Maybe she could meet one of the many bands that are from mixed abilities and discuss her reasoning behind the term to them in person.
It is necessary for us to stick up for people who cannot stick up for themselves. That's not politically correct. It's necessary. People with learning difficulties find it hard enough as it is without being used as fodder or dare I say reappropriated or recontextualised for what is really no more than a cheap gag.
Bennett could well benefit from putting herself up for ridicule. What's next, laughing at old people?
If you like this you should check out Vicki's other stuff.. follow the link in the description... this is from her album 'abridged to far'. It is full of good stuff like this and well worth getting.
Vicki just kicks ass!

@ZaynahInvestmentsltd Are you sure avant retard doesn't just mean "before the old" as distinct from avant garde ("before the new")?
