Yes, it's Lah See and eet ees Noiz-EEE! Especially with the start-up whine and then a clack clack. I could probably put it under my desk or lay a blanket over it (but I suppose it must breathe.)
@tldtoday i just bought a OCZ 60gb SSD for $70 CAD. what is trim.. and should I put in my netbook? its residing in my external enclosure beside a seagate drive. BTW, i use win 7 :P and if you havent realized, ubuntu server.
$399 isn't a bad price considering a 2.5" 500GB 7200rpm hard drive runs for $150 each... the extra $99 is for the enclosure and thunderbolt connectivity...
Hey - I just got mine, and ripped that noisy fan out of there. Wow, million times better. With the heat sinks the average user will be fine with the 5400rpm drives, or the SSDs. Looking forward to the SSD version being available.
its noisy because they're high rpm HDD drives in the case which no matter hom fast the ports and cables are the bottle neck will always be with the drives ( ssd is the only way around this. the cheapest 1 tb ssd is like 1400
Yeah, my drive is loud, but not nearly as loud as the Blackmagic Ultrastudio3D. Unusable in an audio studio. Fortunately I have a machine room that I can throw it in but the noise of these 2 products prevent them from being the ultimate portable audio/video solution. If you can hook them up to a new MacMini server in another room, this is the deadly combo for video. I'm capturing uncompressed 1080p xbox360 video with no problems at all.
Thats my biggest pet hate !!! Noisy drives , I've just swopped out the hdd in my MacBook pro, but it's Noisy , so had to go back to the 160GB , but yeah real bad news that noisy LaCie thunderbolt drive you just got :-(
That drive is stupid. USB 3.0 may not be as fast, but it's way more convenient. Maybe it's jsut the LaCie drive, iono. With a 1tb WD 3.0 drive, theres n noise, andu only need one hookup, not 3 to jsut the drive.
I don't do any voice work on my macs but that kind of a extra sound would get so annoying so fast. I like to work in quiet environment. Those extra computer sounds just drill thru your brain. I hate when my Macbook Pro starts to cool heavily sometimes and the noise is annoying. I usually go get coffee at the point :)
@randomrazr It's a close call. I understand that the 2tb time capsule is near $300 on the Apple Store. It's therefore much less expensive and slower than the Lacie disk, but does a lot more. I'm happy with the Lacie, but I know that I vastly overpaid the $400 for the 1TB. I would advise others to wait for less expensive external hard drives that will be coming out. The one thing that turns me off from the Lacie more than the price is the constant, whining, high-pitched noise.
Hey Jon, thanks for the video review. Don't mean to correct you but the company is pronounced "LUH-SEE". They made a point of it when I attended Macworld last year. :-)
of no use to me. already have a seagate TB. also hdd speeds will never get to the speeds needed to even scrape on the capabilities of TB. even SSDs aren't as fast as some might think. you won't get 400mb/s write speeds any time soon. so it's useless at this stage, and that is why no other major companies have adopted it yet. my two cents.
@OoLP44oO LaCie drives are hit and miss in my experience. The speed is kind of limited by it being mechanical. Still more impressive than SATA speeds.
@OoLP44oO I don't feel like it's a waste of money at all. Drop in the bucket if you're doing professional video projects that can really benefit from the bandwidth of Thunderbolt. It really is something previously unobtainable without a PCIe card. So slow, no. Overpriced, maybe. Loud, yes. Ugly.... who cares?
This reminds me of a an Iomega 500GB portable drive I had that was faulty when I had it connected via the FW400 port. It produced a high pitched whine and wouldnt mount the drive. The USB I/O was ok. Hope this isnt the norm. Thats gonna put a lot of people off for sure.
My iomega ego belt 1TB with firewire is not that fast, neither so slow, it's fast for what i need, but with my mbp that have ssd and the ego belt working together, you can't say if these are working or not, these are soooo silent...
It' ridiculous that an expensive and fast lacie like this make so annoying noise!
I use the Promise Pegasus R4, and at it's loudest, is nowhere near as loud as the LaCie Little Big Disk! It's amazing that 2-2.5" drives make that much noise? I am considering picking up one, but after hearing yours...? Plus the price tag is a little high. 2TB-$499? A Promise Pegasus is $999 for 4-3.5" drives that you can upgrade to 2TB when you want to.

I stopped using LaCie drives after that one because I actually had problems using it as a scratch disk.
Question....theoretically the device should be able to boast up to 10Gbps, which would mean 125 GBps (10 Gbps/8 bits per Byte). Where is average R/W speeds of 180 GBps coming from?

The reason its so expensive (which it actually isnt) is it is not a regular 1TB HardDrive. There are three reasons why it is better therefore more expensive than a regular 1TB HDD. 1. Its a thunderbolt drive. 2. Its a RAID array which means it gets much faster read/write speeds and must have two drives. 3.
