  • wtf are you making a point of.. just don't pay attention to that thing

  • They're hard drives spinning extremely fast so obviously they are going to be loud

  • So does this thing actually achieve 10gb/s transfer or not?

  • These are $499 and, yes, they are loud. Mine has the same exact fan/high pitch noise issue.

  • Yes, it's Lah See and eet ees Noiz-EEE! Especially with the start-up whine and then a clack clack. I could probably put it under my desk or lay a blanket over it (but I suppose it must breathe.)

  • where is the 10 GB per second ????

  • @tldtoday i just bought a OCZ 60gb SSD for $70 CAD. what is trim.. and should I put in my netbook? its residing in my external enclosure beside a seagate drive. BTW, i use win 7 :P and if you havent realized, ubuntu server.

  • 10Gb/s. is this true so far?

  • do the Apple Thunderbolt Cables come with it

  • $399 isn't a bad price considering a 2.5" 500GB 7200rpm hard drive runs for $150 each... the extra $99 is for the enclosure and thunderbolt connectivity...

  • Hey - I just got mine, and ripped that noisy fan out of there. Wow, million times better. With the heat sinks the average user will be fine with the 5400rpm drives, or the SSDs. Looking forward to the SSD version being available.

  • its noisy because they're high rpm HDD drives in the case which no matter hom fast the ports and cables are the bottle neck will always be with the drives ( ssd is the only way around this. the cheapest 1 tb ssd is like 1400

  • Does it work in BootCamp?

  • Yeah, my drive is loud, but not nearly as loud as the Blackmagic Ultrastudio3D. Unusable in an audio studio. Fortunately I have a machine room that I can throw it in but the noise of these 2 products prevent them from being the ultimate portable audio/video solution. If you can hook them up to a new MacMini server in another room, this is the deadly combo for video. I'm capturing uncompressed 1080p xbox360 video with no problems at all.

  • What is the benefit hooking it up to both the display and the Air? wouldnt it work just the same if just connected to one of them?

  • MacBook airs thunderbolt isn't as fast as the mbp or desktops because the MBA is only single channel the others are doubble

  • Thunderbolt is noisy? It's thunder

  • that's what you get if you use 2 HDD in raid 0 in a very small case, its the fan spining so the HDDs dont crash

  • Thats my biggest pet hate !!! Noisy drives , I've just swopped out the hdd in my MacBook pro, but it's Noisy , so had to go back to the 160GB , but yeah real bad news that noisy LaCie thunderbolt drive you just got :-(

  • That drive is stupid. USB 3.0 may not be as fast, but it's way more convenient. Maybe it's jsut the LaCie drive, iono. With a 1tb WD 3.0 drive, theres n noise, andu only need one hookup, not 3 to jsut the drive.

  • Have you taken it apart yet?

  • I don't do any voice work on my macs but that kind of a extra sound would get so annoying so fast. I like to work in quiet environment. Those extra computer sounds just drill thru your brain. I hate when my Macbook Pro starts to cool heavily sometimes and the noise is annoying. I usually go get coffee at the point :)

  • i have the same brand its a one terabyte not a thunderbolt though and mine isn't loud at all so idk

  • @DeeJayBounce Or this is a review channel and by me making these videos others are informed.

  • I have and always will pronounce it Lassie!

  • P.S., it's pronounced "Luh-see"

  • @ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy TSIG is here! aha

  • @ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy Now I know :D

  • @tldtoday And knowing is half the battle. G.I.JOE

  • good review! :) let us know if this is just a faulty unit or if they're all this noisy!

  • maybe it doubles as a vacuum

    have you tried that

    :)

  • that thing is loud bro

  • I had a lacie external hard drive a couple years ago, and had to get rid of it, to loud!

  • Beautiful, buying one today

  • Mine is very loud, too--very disappointing.

  • @stuartlb you have this too?

  • @randomrazr Yes, I bought it the day before yesterday. It's very fast (as advertised), but much noisier than I thought it might be.

  • @stuartlb would you say the apple 2tb time capsule is better value over this?

  • Comment removed

  • @stuartlb i found one for 75 dollars off the 299 price tag. would that be worth it? lol

  • @randomrazr It's a close call. I understand that the 2tb time capsule is near $300 on the Apple Store. It's therefore much less expensive and slower than the Lacie disk, but does a lot more. I'm happy with the Lacie, but I know that I vastly overpaid the $400 for the 1TB. I would advise others to wait for less expensive external hard drives that will be coming out. The one thing that turns me off from the Lacie more than the price is the constant, whining, high-pitched noise.

  • Can this be bus-powered?

  • Hey Jon, thanks for the video review. Don't mean to correct you but the company is pronounced "LUH-SEE". They made a point of it when I attended Macworld last year. :-)

  • The advert for this Mac Related video is ironically a Windows 7 Advert xD Brilliant video man! :D

  • @Theworldoftechuk Windows adverts need to be "brilliant" because Windows 7 sucks! XD.

  • Can't hear it

  • The product this guy is using is an early prototype.

This noise issue has been identified by LaCie, has been corrected and this shall not happen in production units.

I am wondernig where this unit came from.

Erwan Girard LaCie Business Unit Manager

  • @AirZone000 Didn't he say in the video that he got it at the Apple store?

  • @AirZone000 I think he said he bought it in an Apple Store...

  • of no use to me. already have a seagate TB. also hdd speeds will never get to the speeds needed to even scrape on the capabilities of TB. even SSDs aren't as fast as some might think. you won't get 400mb/s write speeds any time soon. so it's useless at this stage, and that is why no other major companies have adopted it yet. my two cents.

  • Thunderbolt won't come to PC's until next year.

  • why didnt they use a fucking ssd. So stupid

  • @torontoistheshit101 they have an ssd model but it only has a max of 240gb

  • Write speed 150 mb/s with a 20 gb/s cable now that's stupiditi.

  • Do a room tour of your setup.

  • This thing is: ugly, slow, overpriced and loud. What a waste of Money,....

  • @OoLP44oO LaCie drives are hit and miss in my experience. The speed is kind of limited by it being mechanical. Still more impressive than SATA speeds.

  • @OoLP44oO Sounds like a PC

  • @OoLP44oO I agree with you.

  • @OoLP44oO It is far from slow

  • @OoLP44oO I don't feel like it's a waste of money at all. Drop in the bucket if you're doing professional video projects that can really benefit from the bandwidth of Thunderbolt. It really is something previously unobtainable without a PCIe card. So slow, no. Overpriced, maybe. Loud, yes. Ugly.... who cares?

  • @OoLP44oO Slow ? lol

  • @OoLP44oO You forgot that it has soem kick ass performance that can't be beat for the price. You're ugly.

  • can i use this as a external hard drive for a pc?

  • @hersheyboy1234 Does your PC have thunderbolt? Well, the answer to that is no, so no you cannot

  • i can't hear the noise from the vid but damn thats a let down

  • I thought your MacBook Air was almost gonna fall.

  • lol

  • Question: Is it posible to run a program like After Effects on a seperate drive? Do it go faster? Hope u understand what I ment : )

  • covering up the ventilation hole? yeah a good option

  • Comment removed

  • Why connect it to your display

  • @TheMacSpeaker It has a Thunderbolt port. He was seeing how the daisy chaining works.

  • Clearly you haven't bashed it against the wall enough.

  • Do you think future Thunderbolt will be better and less noisy?

  • Sounds like a piece of shit to me XD

And it needs an AC adaptor??

I thought thunderbolt was superior to USB 3.0 XD

  • why is this better than an WesternDigital external hard disk...it's kinda pointless...

  • why do you buy desk from a gay countrys gay mall

  • Hey Johnathan,

This reminds me of a an Iomega 500GB portable drive I had that was faulty when I had it connected via the FW400 port. It produced a high pitched whine and wouldnt mount the drive. The USB I/O was ok. Hope this isnt the norm. Thats gonna put a lot of people off for sure.

  • My LaCie drive is very loud as well. Think its just LaCie

  • is there an apple store in egypt ?

  • Do you have a Displayport Display you can Daisy Chain behind the LaCie?

I mean MacBook Air, Thunderbolt Display, LaCie, Displayport Display... this is rumored to work... nice video! Keep going ;)

  • My iomega ego belt 1TB with firewire is not that fast, neither so slow, it's fast for what i need, but with my mbp that have ssd and the ego belt working together, you can't say if these are working or not, these are soooo silent...

It' ridiculous that an expensive and fast lacie like this make so annoying noise!

  • Could you hotplug the device between your MBA and Display?

  • what's the point of that high-surface-area enclosure then if the fan is still loud?!

  • Don't even hear it lol

  • I went to the IBC in Amstdam, and there LaCie showed that it actually did make the 23MB/s! And 4:4:4 1080p was possible to edit with.

  • I wonder what speeds you can get with dual SSD's in a enclosure like this one. Probably pretty amazing.

  • really cool configuration and speed, to bad about the noise. the speed is super fast for mechanical HDD !

  • do you return this stuff

  • And I almost forgot...

Not even 200MBs? Just seems for the price that the Little Big Disk should perform better or cost less.

  • @gflores76 compare it to a different drive. Also Daisy chaining is a plus.

  • @gflores76 200MB/s is with traditional Hard Drives in RAID 0...with SSDs you get 450 MB/s

  • Good review as always!

    But...

I use the Promise Pegasus R4, and at it's loudest, is nowhere near as loud as the LaCie Little Big Disk! It's amazing that 2-2.5" drives make that much noise? I am considering picking up one, but after hearing yours...? Plus the price tag is a little high. 2TB-$499? A Promise Pegasus is $999 for 4-3.5" drives that you can upgrade to 2TB when you want to.

    Just saying...

  • It's pronounced (Lah-see), not Lacey

  • I know your problem is with the fans, but aside from that, does it make any noise when the drive is being accessed? I used to own a LaCie d2 Quadra and found that it didn't like being set up vertically and made these weird noises like the disk was being scratched or something, so I laid it on its side and it turned fine. I stopped using LaCie drives after that one because I actually had problems using it as a scratch disk.

  • When will Apple finally update their crappy YouTube apps on the iPhone and iPad?!

  • It's spinning at 88mph that's why its so loud....just sayin

  • Question....theoretically the device should be able to boast up to 10Gbps, which would mean 125 GBps (10 Gbps/8 bits per Byte). Where is average R/W speeds of 180 GBps coming from?

  • @jlucan He says 180MB/s...

  • @jlucan If you are talking about what John said, he said 180MBps.

  • Sounds kinda like old dial-up internet.

  • Comment removed

  • Question:should i get macbook pro or macbook air. or a imac?

Which. i dont need firewire and disk would be great but not really needed since cd

sharing.i need to save money so is the extra 100 bucks worth it? i really want laptop but i could live it

  • Too loud... Geezus send it back

  • that speed is horrendous for a raid 0 :(

  • John? Do you live in Glendale? or around the city? If so that's awesome, if you need any help editing or anything let me know! - Joe

  • You think that's loud? My HP PC sounds like two AC-130s lifting a firetruck :(

  • can you switch the internal drives to 2TB HDD's?

  • Mine is veryyyyyy noisy it bothers me a lot!!!!!!!!

  • @bmw2go11 Please go back to your nursing home.

  • just to tell you guys he a the son of the world richest man.. but he is the cover up son

  • Couldn't hear sh*t. lol

    Nice simple review. :)

  • Thetechcravers

  • Great video.

  • My computer is noisy. Its like hearing a real fan, not a computer fan, going on in there o_o

  • My friend got one and it is loud he returned it.

  • well it would kill you man but and i meant but if you look at it in a finial destination way you may wana call apple lol

  • suscribed! Your videos rock!

  • I could hear it on my headphones but barely..you must have an amazing mic!

  • The reason its so expensive (which it actually isnt) is it is not a regular 1TB HardDrive. There are three reasons why it is better therefore more expensive than a regular 1TB HDD. 1. Its a thunderbolt drive. 2. Its a RAID array which means it gets much faster read/write speeds and must have two drives. 3. LaCie hired designers for thier drives so there is a extra cost for the nice design.

  • Sounds like a Hairdryer, I would never want that near my desk.

  • Got the same desk, you got some good taste in desk.

  • Hey @tldtoday, what kind of desk do you have?

  • @EnvXOwner Galant from IKEA

  • @tldtoday wow man, thanks for a quick reply!

  • @tldtoday wow man, thanks for a quick reply!

  • @tldtoday I remember you did a review on the headphones "Fanny Wang" I believe. I'm just wondering... Would you recommend them for their price? Or do you think that there is a better alternative? Thank you! I LOVE TLD

  • @tldtoday

    I love IKEA!

  • @tldtoday IKEA STUFF RULZ TEH WORLD.

  • @tldtoday IKEA <---- Is from Sweden, just like hot girls!

  • @tldtoday IKEA <---- Is from Sweden, just like hot girls!

  • Could be a bad fan, unless you're hearing drives.

Just curious... if it as fast connected directly to the Mac vs via the display?

  • @wwwinsanelygreatmac Pretty sure it's the fan but I think the high pitch noise are the drives. For this video it's directly to the Mac but I'll test it out vice versa and let you know know.

  • how the f*ck do you get this thing?

  • @GMTecano Apple Store Pasadena

  • A fellow Texan huh? Never woulda guest!

  • @TheAk47Enthusiast you telling me that Pasadena is in Texas?

  • There is a city called Pasadena in Texas but come to think of it that is a really small town and I'll be damned if theres an apple store in pasadena tx pop. 100,000+. Sorry but whenever I think of Pasadena I think of that small town in Harris County that I went to to visit my grandma in Kereville, Tx..

  • @TheAk47Enthusiast ok sorry but he's in pasadena, california

  • @tldtoday Thank you!!

  • @tldtoday Thats the Apple store I go to too! :D

  • hitachi drives.. lame

  • thats kinda a downfall .

  • stuff it behind the desk. problem solved. is it louder than my 360.

  • 40th comment. new record!!!!!

  • I hope you can get that thing to quiet down!

  • That's faster than my internal SATA.

  • are those 2 2.5" or 3.5" hdds? that thing looks too small to be 2 3.5" drives

  • @Luger718A1 watch the rest of the video..

  • @bmw2go11 he doesnt specify...

  • @Luger718A1 I did =P They are two 2.5" drives.

  • @tldtoday oh! didnt hear that....that sucks...the price of this enclosure IS TOO DAMN HIGH!

  • Comment removed

  • that sucks....and this thing is damn expensive

  • @Luger718A1 Yea tell me about it!

  • this technology is so stupid.

  • @bmw2go11 Don't make uneducated comments please.

  • @tldtoday I also think this is stupid. Here are my reasons #1- cost it 300$+ #2- I saw 2 terra bytes at walmart for 120$ish- even if it i
