Bit before my time, but love Aussie crawl. Recently heard this for the first time while i was driving. It was a kickass sunny day with a perfect breeze. Arm out the window, radio "cranked", i was lovin it....! Wish i still had that old V8 ute !
Arrived Down Under a few days after Australia won the America's Cup in 1983 in order to find a job in a mine in WA. Being from Germany I loved the country, the people and the Australian Spirit from day one. This band's music served as a kind of soundtrack to my 6 months stay then.Though I never returned, the memories and the music will remain forever. Thanks for putting ot up, mate !
@NoPlaceForLoafers thank you... 'rage' distracted me from getting laid as a teenager... anyway, i didn't get this clip off 'rage'... i have gotten hold of clips from other resources since...

@bluecent65 No, it was filmed around Koo Wee Rup in Victoria, top of Western Port Bay. It was cold. Pretty cheap considering the song was about girls of Far North Queensland and we were one of the bggest bands in the country at the time. I often wonder what might have happened if smarter decisions had been made, record company would have done more and egos hadn't spun out of control. The official reason given as to why we never broke the US was that they couldn't understand James' vocals. Sigh.
@bluecent65 I always said we should just go there (the US). Once we started playing live to US audiences, the on-stage aspect of the band would have picked up a following like it did here. A band is merely energy. There is no reason why it wouldn't have worked in America as it did here, as live was where the humour between Brad and I became obvious. You couldn't get that off a record but it was one of the most infectious parts of the band live. Check the photos.
@gunboss201 check out all their stuff on yt... shouldn't take you more than an hour or so (if you have the time).... rumour has it that the opening riff of this track inspired Kurt's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' opener...
@dmcguire70 Yeah but Kurt Cobain was still his father's wishful thinking when we wrote/recorded this. We recorded it in Hawaii and stayed in Admiral Nimitz' beachfront mansion for Sons Of Beaches. I found his old bow and arrow set. It was made in Japan.
without a doubt :) as big of a cliche it might be, men at work's down under comes in as close second. both are so symbolic of what OZ represents for me :D
OMG get out! I just thought exactly the same thing! Aussie Crawl are one of the best Australian bands ever. In the 80's i was in primary school I'm mid 30's now and I still love it.
yea kurt got it from them thats because he loved this band he even ask them to reunite so he could see them play live... but two of the band members were dead...
Most of them seem to be sporting a bit of testicle separation, actually. Pants were worn so much higher in the 80s.
On a prettier note - I've always loved that little reprise - for me it as always beautifully captured the final twinkling rays of the sun dropping down over the horizon of our wide brown land (in music). Ahhh.
Its funny how I always pictured Australia as being a place full of old Holdens driving through the outback, based on my own experiences in a Holden and miles of red red sands. This takes me back...
@bolwell I always said that. I was against him joining as we didn't need a third guitar, already had access to his songs and he deserved his own band. Unfortunately, he wasn't an arrogant wanker and that's all recrd companies were looking for in 'front men' back then. I was outvoted. One of the greatest Australian song writers.
Respond to this video... I was againt Guy joining for this reason. He deserved his own band. We already had access to his songs and didn't need a third guitar. He was a much better vocalist than James though. He had his own band. Unfortunately, record companies were only looking for arrogant wankers as frontmen in the late 70s, 80s.

I know this clip was shot around Vic, but where were they actually singing about in the song? Was it nthn NSW or QLD? Have always loved this song - brings back some great memories of growing up. I'm sure anyone who grew up in the 80's has similar fond memories of this era and this band. I am stoked to see all these Aus Crawl clips - had never seen a lot of them
My favourite band from the 70's and 80's; I loved Aussie Crawl.
It's very sad when you consider Guy McDonough and Brad Robinson, both founding members of the band, died very young. Guy was only 26 and Brad 38. Simon Binks is permanently incapacitated as a result of a car accident. There's certainly been a jinx for this great band, but it's great to see James Reyne still going strong.
He's a great singer/songwriter, a true Aussie great.
I had no idea 2 members had died, I only knew about Guy. Thanks for writing that. I agree with you, great band. I try and catch James Reyne when he's playing near me... They don't write this stuff anymore. Such an 'aussie' band. 70's and 80's, for all the bad music, its where the gems came from (for me anyway!). Top song.
"Aint nothing like the windy city Where the station wagon died Were the wild dogs meet the fences And the horsemen fences ride Where the flatlands become flatlands And the caravans collide Im just sittin' 'neath the mango Running a tide.... Chorus: Daughters of the northern coast Sons of beaches Wont deliver the post You know the post is a ghost...."
Kurt Cobain was a major Aus Crawl fan. The very first song Nirvana covered was 'Errol' and Cobain wrote about his admiration for James Reyne in his diaries. Even when they toured Australia, Kurt made an effort to meet every member of Aus Crawl and pleaded for a band reunion, just so he could record a tribute album with the band themselves.
