Dave, is the organ itself a Wurlitzer, Moller, Barton, or a comobnation of organs put together? It sounds great, and the console looks fantastic. Sad about the pipes pershing in the fire.
6 manuals ... overkill for an organ console, but it is still a heck of a lot of fun! Phil Maloof has a dog in the house, and it can be hyper as all get out sometimes. It barks and barks and barks and barks....
@WhiteSoxrock35 Yea thanks to him this is not in the united center(no offense to the new owner) he talked old man Writz out of moving it across the street.
Reminds me of a man I knew who used to play the silent movie houses...he still payed this piece and many others even at the age of 93(back in the mis 80's).... This is a lost art form and needs to be preserved....they just don't make things like they used to! BRAVO!
awesome playing!!! I love the posthorn!! I am so glad that although the tragic fire happened that this giant and beautiful console has a new and loving home. KEEP IT UP-BRAVO!!!!!
I remember back in '94 they came out with that Remember the Roar slogan, and it seemes that everyone still wishes the Hawks played at the old stadium. At least I am old enough to remember that great place. The United Center will never live up to the stadium, they lost most of the die-hards when they moved and now that the hawks suck the place is half empty, I know if they still played in the stadium it would be standing room only on the 2nd balcony.
If you want to hear the Chicago Stadium organ again, you can buy all the recordings of Al Melgard at the console. It is a 10 or so disc set. I found it at Ebay. I don't know if they allow posts mentioning Ebay. The recordings are very good. Especially turn up the volume on "Stormy Weather." Anybody remember?
I was too young to see a game at Chicago Stadium..is the sound/feel of the organ in the arena that much different than at the UC? I know you can never mess w/an original and wish I could see just one game at that old barn, but just wondering because the new organ sounds pretty crisp at the UC, at least for what standards I can go by...
splp27, we are probably about the same age. I am 26 and I was at a lot of games at the Old Grand Lady ue to my Uncle having season tickets. At the UC is sounds good but its nothing compared to the Old Barn. All the piping was air compression and it was all thru the roof of the Madhouse. So when Frankie P started firing away on the organ with the fan noise the Old Lady was literally shaking. Its night and day between the Madhouse on Madison and the UC.
The difference about the feel of the great organ in Chicago Stadium was that it moved so much air that you could "feel" the music. I live in Pittsburgh but made five trips to Chicago to experience live the organ and game experience that I heard on TV and radio for decades.
Bring the organ back to where it should be, that is the west side of Chicago and 1901 Madison St. This of course is the United Center. I know they already have an organ, but with this new era of blackhawks hockey, bring a little piece of what Chicago Stadium was all about.
Bring this organ back to Madison St. and have it played at hawks games again.
Dave, thank you for putting this on You Tube for us Blackhawk loyalists! Even though a Detroit fan, please play "Here Come the Hawks" and hold the last note like Frank Pelico did. Also, consider putting out a Christmas Carol CD, those sound wonderful on that organ!
It does my heart good to know that someone rescued that wonderful organ!I hated to see it leave Chicago though (as did many organ enthusiatists). You're so lucky to be able to play it. That was something I could only dream of.
Can't wait to see and hear more of your playing on the Barton, Dave, and that's quite a setup Mr. Maloof has in his place, too! That's the most alive I've heard the organ sound since Nancy Faust last played for the Hawks in the spring of '89. Great job.
Being a red wing fan I hated that thing LOL! After being at a game in the united center I realized how much it meant to the arena. I'd love to see the organ in the Fox moved over to a new arena for the red wings. Is that one you played in another vid originally from Olympia Stadium. I'd love to hear organ music in a new arena, but would you be interested in playing it if it came about?
The Fox organ needs to always remain right where it's at ... in the best location ever for it ... right at the Fox! I would absolutely love to see an organ be put in at the Joe or at a new arena if one ever gets built. I am a major Wings fan and would love to play the organ for the games. The Chicago Stadium organ was absolutely incredible. The new United Center set-up is a joke and a waste of space. GO WINGS!
I perform out there again in August. I will have more time to familiarize myself with the organ then, and will record more videos. I also promise to do more "showing" of the incredible room that the organ is installed in. You will be able to see a lot more then. Unfortunately, it's a few months out ... sorry! I'm in Detroit, the organ is in Las Vegas!
There was a good deal of the original pipework of the organ destroyed by a fire, but the console was not damaged. I believe that it wasn't even in the storage area at the time.
Yes. The console is intact, and completely restored to bring out the details again in it that were worn off after many many events at the old Stadium. The console looks incredible now.
Wow! I've been waiting along time to see this magnificent 'beast' on YouTube. Hope to see some more 'complete' performances in the future. Thanks for posting!
wow,,,great job! get this entire piece going here on youtube,,,,

The organ is a wide mix of about everything that is out there. I don't have the specifics, but I do know that there is a large mix.

And I know what real percussions sound like having played theatre pipe organs.
m4dan 4 years ago
Check your hearing then. The percussions are real. They are along the left wall of the room, outside of the chambers.

Okay.

Dave:
Am I mistaken, or did the Chicago Stadium Barton console get destroyed by fire a while back?

There was a good deal of the original pipework of the organ destroyed by a fire, but the console was not damaged. I believe that it wasn't even in the storage area at the time.
DaveCalendine 4 years ago
So Phil Malouf still has the console intact in his place in Las Vegas?

Yes. The console is intact, and completely restored to bring out the details again in it that were worn off after many many events at the old Stadium. The console looks incredible now.
