that movie is so Great Movie The story Is Nice The Actor is not bad the Turk Ppl is Really Peace Of Shits and this movie is clearing the injustice in turkey from more than 30 years ago and how this country was shit Country
@MURDORER1 Hah hah hah haaaaa, you will carry drug and you will not be punished hah hah haaa.İs it in your garbage egypt like that ? You dont punish the people who sells the drug and all your egyptian people use drug. You moron...
The actor who played Billy Hayes was physically and sexually abused when he was a child, and had struggled with alcohol and drug addiction throughout his life. This was not just acting. The anger inside of him must have made it that much easier to pull of this scene.
What captivates my conscience the most about this scene is its realism in presenting a rather accurate take on what a scarcely traceable fine line there is which weakly separates sanity from insanity. It's much too real for my viewing tastes. I say that because I've been there and whoever wrote this scene into the movie knows far more about surrealistic psychoses than he'd likely want to share. Ahh yes, I can see a maniacal psychotic from miles away.
@Tristina143 The trailer said that it was based on a true story...D: I know they change some things but I'm guessing after what he went through, something like this did actually happen.
@LemitriDawkins "based on a true story" can mean anything from a direct translation to basically have everything wrong for drama/other reasons. It's probably the last in this case. Just look at the end of this movie, does the death of the abusive cop come off as believeable?
Can some one explain what exactly went on with Rifki. I saw this movie so many years ago. I know that he told a like or something, but what exactly happened.
I'm watching this, and the only first association that comes to mind is..This is Croatia after being constantly maltreated, abused and insulted for years now.
Over and over, and over, and over again. With such disgusting obvious favoritistic insinuations, false accusations, and plain and simple abuse of a nation, simply for the perversion of Hague Tribunal. The same Hague, which just watched thousands massacred in Srebrenica and did nothing
this scene is a perfect portrayal of a mans final moments of his slippery grip on sanity and the point at which he must act against something that he absolutely refuses to stand for...in other words fuck all the RIFKI's of the world and take this as an example of what may come =p. beautiful scene
I don't know if he died or not, but in this movie Rifki was a first class betrayer. The prison director was always on Rifki's side, so Rifki's inmates got all the punishments (mostly they got hit by a stick under their feet, over their whole body, raped and/or humiliated by the prison director). Rifki always got rewards, he has never been punished. The director believed that Rifki always spoke the truth and that his inmates always lied to him.

Shouldnt take offence as Turkish people. Everyone knows that here is a heaven of holiday. At least we are having millions of tourist everyyear that didn't get effected by this kind of movies.
And all those people who got themselves into trouble , don't worry , our prisons are modern exceedingly ( ! ) .
If you haven't been then don't go to turkey, I've seen some fucked up stuff over there. Apart from it being very dangerous with all the sleazy Turks, the food is horrible and the hotels are filthy. @satnutladias BTW this movie was filmed 1978 in a Turkish hotel near Antalia. It`s amazing how much your hotels look like prisons. We have a saying,: 'If you going on holiday in Turkey, only one-way ticket is guaranteed'
Well part to this film is true but 2 scenes are ficcion, the rape and the kill to the captain to the jail, well terrible movie, but was true, a few years ago, Bill Hayes back to Turkey and then he apologized to the turkish people in 2007.
Billy Hayes was younger, he was guilty, well we leave a lesson and proube of life.
@angleable1 This is not about a tourist visiting Turkey in 2010 or working in the airforce in Turkey. OFCOURSE it's nothing like in this movie. Did you even watch it?
@angleable1 AH, now I see my mistake. You're a silly drippy girlie who's spent her life being beaten around the head with English dictionaries by her boyfriends. I only joined youtube a couple of months ago, never knew ot was so much FUN! Cretins innumerable to insult. LOVE IT! Keep it up, baby...
@angleable1 For your information, moron, I am English. And as for being 'hippocratic', I'm a racist, not a doctor. Buy an English dictionary (if you can pronounce that to the bookseller), then go squeeze your boils in your bedsit. And find yourself a girlfriend. I find it rather splendid I've annoyed you.
@guyejones Oh yeah, I love Turks. Especially the fascism, the death penalty for smiling in the afternoon, the undrinkable water supply, the poverty, the garlic... If it's such a splendid place to reside perhaps you'd care to explain why so many of the greasy twats hook up with brain-dead female holidaymakers in order to secure themselves British citizenship? I await your answer with something vaguely approaching interest...
@angleable1 First & foremost, I think you should learn to write English. Your spelling & grammar are cretinous at best. Kindergarten stuff. Woeful.Second, he was in the wrong, got himself out of it then wrote a book which was, as with Papillon and I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, over-dramatized by Hollywood. Who gives a fuck about THAT? Fact: the bloke was brutalized by a fascist system & emerged STILL a human being. Ever read the book, cocksucker? Thought not. Fuck you & your moralizing.
Puttnam told me they hada big discussion on set about how grim this scene was but its my favurite bit aoart fronm the court address where he slates the evil turk judges
I read an interview that Billy Hayes gave once and he said that although a lot of the film was factual this attack was not an he was pulled off after throwing a few punches .. He also had a Homosexual affair with the guy he pushes away in the shower scene .. biggest difference was that after the asylum he transferred to an island whereby he escaped in a fishing boat and rowing to the mainland through a storm .. But I remember the first time I saw this it blew me away .. what a great film !!!
even though this scene is untrue from what reality, this is one of the greatest moments of movie history causing so many different emotions to flood through you. alan parker and oliver stone has done a great job and i have no idea why brad davis wasn't nominated for his portrayal. what a waist.
Funny how some of you really say this is what turks deservedd.. I ronicallly the bitch american who was the inspiration for the movie (Billy Hayes) also apologised for Lying about some of the scenes,, INFRONT OF THE TURKISH PARLIAMENT AND HIS OWN JUST A FEW YEARS BACK.. Especially thiss. It never happened.. Nor did it happen in his book so yee soory to busrt your bubble ppl
even thought im greek and i sould be ''satisfied'' by the depiction of turks in the movie... i wonder how Oriver stone desided to depict turks as monsters!!!
they dont exist bad or good nations.. we are all the same people... i tottaly understand the turkish complains about that wovie!!! and i support them!!!
@lotiq hahaha you think i am terrorist you are dickhead i am a member of the National Socailist Turkish Movement (neo-nazi) i will kill kill give ur adress
@channel...good question...both characters were immersed in a harsh environment...but i think billy, more so than mac, depicted the frustration inherent in his situation...i mean, billy's outbursts (like the one in this scene) really show the sense of desperation within him, whereas, even though mac was suffering as well, mac played it off w/ a lot of humor, so it wasn't as apparent...billy more overtly displayed his feelings of being trapped..but yeah, they both did what they could to stay sane
here are good and bad in everywhere....you can not judge whole nation depend on bad ones....can we jugde whole nation usa depend on what was going on in guantanamo prison, iraq, vietnam ect.....there are good and bads........the system is not perfect in everywhere.....also the people on the movie can not even speak turkish....armenian and greek people took part on this movie....can we jugde whole greek nation beacuse what they did to illegal immigrants....do not stick your head into the sand .
... not so much West is nice and "other' worlds bad...more a grey area....in other words, which 'world' allows a fairly sensible (yes, I know, what does "sensible" mean) progression of the of rule of law.....people tend to like to know if there is rule which is being followed...and in this movie...well...I am afraiid, everything is quite arbitrary.
NO sorry IT IS a true story. Read the book, its much better than the movie and it tells MUCH MUCH more on how he escaped. The way he escaped in the flick never happened. It took him months to do so
the name of the song 2:11 pleaseeeeee....I ask you

R.P MacMurray (Jack Nicholson) in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest?

@channel...good question...both characters were immersed in a harsh environment...but i think billy, more so than mac, depicted the frustration inherent in his situation...i mean, billy's outbursts (like the one in this scene) really show the sense of desperation within him, whereas, even though mac was suffering as well, mac played it off w/ a lot of humor, so it wasn't as apparent...billy more overtly displayed his feelings of being trapped..but yeah, they both did what they could to stay sane

Can someone please tell me why the West is nice and other worlds are bad???
groupfannynits 1 year ago 9
... not so much West is nice and "other' worlds bad...more a grey area....in other words, which 'world' allows a fairly sensible (yes, I know, what does "sensible" mean) progression of the of rule of law.....people tend to like to know if there is rule which is being followed...and in this movie...well...I am afraiid, everything is quite arbitrary.

@ groupfannynits
there are loads of movies about prisons in the west too...

@groupfannynits
Certainly. Racist misinformation.
The West has Rendition and Guantanamo, but they don't like talking about THAT.

NO sorry IT IS a true story. Read the book, its much better than the movie and it tells MUCH MUCH more on how he escaped. The way he escaped in the flick never happened. It took him months to do so

Is not a LIE!, is just fiction. The book "Midnight express" is a Autobiography and the movie is a almost complete different story.
i´m agree with that Rifki deserved that...(Sorry for my english, i´m learning right now.

The irony? The warden is Israeli; born in the U.S. but lived in Israel for awhile. He fought in the Yom Kippur War.
