For me it only happens when I overheat it and only if I overheat it playing a game that takes a lot of memory. So i guess my problem is just overheating right?
Aw that sucks.. it's definitely the graphics card. Don't bother reformatting the hard drive, wont make a difference. You may want to just buy a new one that comes with a 1 year warranty. But if it's a rare system, such as a 60 gb, you may want to invest in getting it fixed, since it has a lot of features that the newer models dont have. I opted to just have Sony fix mine, since I play ps2 games on it all the time.. it was worth it, to me, and still a lot cheaper than getting another 60 gb.
I have the same problem, I hit the system a bit and it seems to work for a while. about 2 or 3 hours...sometimes. but if you bring it to a local computer shop, that fixes computers and then tell them you think the problem is the graphics card. and they can probably find the problem and you don;t have to ship it to sony for a ridiculous service fee, if your out of warranty that is.I just got portal 2 too :,(
my ps3 is doing da exact same thing n somebody has to kno wat part of my mainframe is malfunctioning, can someone plz release a fix video so sony ps3 corp pirates can stop juicing for more profits, n da new ps4 wont b released til next yr, formattin hard drive or reboot file database does not work!!!
@MromanMr I never got a satisfactory answer. Some of my friends think its the graphics card dying and not the hard drive, though, so while I suggest formatting in the video, it probably won't work.
I suspect you don't want to hear this, but in the end I just bought a new one. If you're still under warranty, give Sony a ring. Otherwise, when you buy a new one, make sure to buy an extended warranty!

a few days ago my ps3 froze while playin , first i thought not a big deal since it happens now and then ... but it kept freezing also on other games, then i had my PS3 off over the night and the next morning i tried again...so right now i can play sometimes but not too long cause sooner or later it will freeze again - just today it froze after like 5 minutes or something...
My PS3 also hangs. it's been 2 years since i bought my ps3
