  • Wonderful orchestral production and wonderful song and singer...rubbish video, totally unsuitable. Al Bowlly was very popular in Britain in the 1930s and for the first year of WW2...very, very sadly he was killed in a Nazi bombing air raid on London on 16/17 April 1941 when a high explosive land mine exploded close to his flat in Jermyn Street, Piccadilly, in the early hours of 17 April 1941.

  • Weird stuff

  • I like the video myself, doesn't anyone have a sense of humour anymore? It goes nicely with the song.

  • Brilliant Silliest of the highest form, Bravo!

  • OK. What movie is this clip from?

  • I think the vids supposed to be ironic personally, not totally irrelevant.

  • Do tell, is this an extremely dated music video for the song, or is it from some wonderfully delicious old movie?

  • Bizarre video. Why doesn't someone do one with a video of Hector and Molly from The Monarch of the Glen since this was "their song."

  • Nothing like an old geezer stealing your girl.

  • I suspect you have to be some sort of intellectual to understand this film, which makes me glad i'm daft.

Song is the most beautiful ever written, sung by the greatest crooner ever.

  • The video is a scene from Luis Bunuel's surreealist film L'age D'or (also on YouTube) . It's meant to be crazy, but I don't find it particularly inapt for this marvelous song.

  • At the time, romance was portrayed on the screen in very subtle, held-back and tense way. The way these two people are acting would have been considered very emotionally powerful and passionate.

  • is that hitler?

  • @LordVatter I think it's bryan ferry

  • Weird film...lovely music.

  • Pictures and music have nothing to do with each other. Trust in Bowlly, love is the sweetest thing.

  • Weird film, first he cuts his face then I thought she was kissing her dad but no!!

this is almost porno !! its the 30s for gods sake !!

  • El conductor viejo gano al fin sin tratar:-)

  • that guy in the beginning is getting a little too fresh with her for my comfort level..

  • I keep coming back to your vids - your choice of music and image combinations are absolutaly brilliant.

  • What the heck is going on? I've never been more confused by a video, really. If someone could even come up with a BS explanation of this, kudos to you.

  • Thanks, JoelinaBinx! I try to confuse someone every day!

  • Variety is the spice of life.Enjoy and stay calm or just chill out. Thanks Terry Nun. good humour.

  • @JoelinaBinx First theyare both drunk, Then he realizes he has a foot fetish for statues with ugly toes, His eyes are bloodshot from lack of sleep! And He finds out she has a fetish for old coots with bad headaches. This is a curse to his libido! Well hell I gave it a shot! So do I get kudos?

  • @JoelinaBinx The hitler dude gettin his frisk on and as a result gets bitch slapped by the dame and then she feels bad and cleans him up and decides to get it on with old conductor dude.

  • wonderful voice great song thanks for the upload

  • Great song, but the film clip is Most Bizarre, especially the lacerated face sequence!!!

  • this is on Doctor Who...teehee...

  • @acutellamaphobia ... it's also on a bread advertisement

  • Sheer class

  • Everyone is haemorraging!

God I do love Al Bowlly - such a voice.

    Thanks for upload

  • There is no substitute fro 1930s songs celebrating the romance and ecstasy of love.

Londoners from the WW II generation had names for memorable nights during the air attacks on London - Al Bowlly died on the 'Big Thursday' - April 17th 1941. (April 19th was 'the Big Saturday').

I have actually seen the building Bowlly died in - the upper brickwork and the windows were modern if I remember aright and the site on the oppposite side of the road was modern too.

  • What a beautiful lilting voice Al bowlly has .

     Rest in Peace.

Shame he was taken so young.

His memory will live on .

Cause LOVE is the sweetest thing !

Love you still and BIG THANK YOU TO terencenunn35

    CHEERS!

  • This maybe the one of the sweetest songs!

I have never heard the original singer singing this beautiful song.

A fan of Mary Hopkin, Japan

    All the best,

    Tommy

  • Great singer, beautiful song. The video is such a mismatch that I obscure it when listening.

  • Beautiful song.

  • can someone explain what this video clip is portraying? why doesnt she scream when his face looks like rocky balboa in round 12 with the great russian.

  • Ah, hotty198, that would be giving the game away!

  • Lovely. Seem to remember Paul McCaan doing a good version of it on the Monocled Mutineer, could of been similair song though, it was a while back.

  • I have always liked this song, this version is just out of this world.

  • I really love this song, but there's something ever so slightly sinister about it.

  • Another beauty. Thank you, Sir x

  • Great voice, Al Bowlly.

  • poor girl acting with that ugly twat

  • Wow! I think I missed the part where they show her tw-

    Oh, you mean the guy...

  • i really am laughing out loud by your comment.I'm pleased, while she is getting tickled pink LOL

  • What a voice, but why the wierd video? It's Luis Bunuel isn't it? Pornography of its day. Bunuel made Belle de Jour and other similar exploitative gems. Al Bowlly doesn't need such titillation. He was brilliant.

  • The guy in that film clip is wearing one of the phoniest looking toupees I have ever seen. I thought for certain that when he banged his head on that potted plant, the thing would fly right off.

  • Yes i had one like that once and the cat got hold of it and it was never the same again!!!.

  • You are a riot my friend. One of the funniest things I've read on YouTube in a long time!!!!!

  • LOL

  • this is ether fake or illegal for its time, that just wouldn't be played at mainstream cinama's back then, a screen kiss was just about at a push but a grope of the body thats a no no...

  • ...this is porn for ya gran folks....!

  • hahaha i'm going to have a chat with pops and granny...

  • Do you know anything about France in the 1920s-1930s and the surrealist movement? There were a lot of films like this. Heck, there's a film called "Un Chien Andalou" that not only depicts rape, but shows a woman getting her eye sliced with a razor.

  • Yeah, i remember that, i watched that eyball slice film at art college, very bizarre. I must have been thinking of 1920's in english cinama. thanks for the info

  • This probably got into circ just before the big censorship crackdown in1934. There were several others of course, as far back as 1915, and several more later with more teeth. The grope parts would have failed most porn committees in '34 and later if this actually came from the US.

  • Thanks for the info, didn't realise so much stuff was going on back then. cheers

  • Were these the good old days that Mums and Dads go on about? Just a thought.

  • I think it was more my great gran and grandad would have talked about...Cheers

  • Uncle Adolf never looked better - Just goes to show you true love never ran smooth-even 70 some years ago...........

  • Fantastic song but why the video of the Adolf Hitler look-a-like getting frisky?

  • Why not?

  • wrong moustache for Hitler

  • She ended up with Karl Marx!

  • Is that supposed to be blood on his face?

  • I just adore this song and but agree its a very strange video. The late John Peel used to love this. Thanks for posting.

  • Thankyou for posting this...you have helped me to get to know this lovely music....I am also very intreaged by the film - what is it please

  • The film in this clip is L'Age D'Or by Luis Bunuel

  • Well, the song is lovely...but the video is VERY disconcerting. I would recommend that anyone who likes this song, as I do, only LISTEN to it...do NOT watch this video. It is DISTURBING. Something very unsettling about it.

  • You're easily disturbed!

  • Might ye be American, by any chance?

  • Too funny - the censors must have had a fun day.....
