  • This whole video is like a scene from a movie or something

  • "How terrible strange to be seventy!!"... Thank you Paul and Arthur for your songs.

  • Happy Birthday Mr. Paul Simon. How terribly strange to be seventy.

  • I dont like to be one of those finger pointers and age is with everyone, but ever since I heard this song in 1968 Ive thought about it and now paul simon is 70 today, and still going well.

  • Applause applause applause, wait for it....Hi Paul

  • the grumpiest jewish dude..CG

  • would love to see them come to scotland and play i would die happy

  • That's not Carlin. Just great music from S & G. Damn, Simon can play that guitar!

  • Does anybody know if that is George Carlin in the skit? Hard to tell from resolution, but almost could be?

  • @KTMONEY100 That would be Charles Grodin

  • Charles Grodin...

  • Wow, I almost turned this off, three minutes in it is pure magic.

  • I want to come to their birthday parties...I missed Eric Burdon's....Happy B Earth Day

Guys! I still love your music!

  • their voices blend so perfectly.

  • haha, how funny they recorded this at all! It's like a reality tv show

  • I am always a little amazed to see great artists like these guys have such a deep perception of life at such a young age as they were when this song was written. A timeless classic. Thanks for posting this video I really enjoyed it!

  • Loooovvveeee the beginning it accounts for the short song. ^_^

  • Still a stunning song, all these years later. That being said, the "writer" of that bit should be beaten, using Charles Grodin as the club.

  • Art Garfunkel <3 1:44 "Chuck come on!" <3 :D

  • they should both play this song while sitting on a park bench when they both turn seventy =D it would be pronominal

  • Comment removed

  • That song gives me chills every time

  • Really makes you want to bitch slap Grodin. Yet, even he couldn't ruin this beautiful song.

  • Nice Guild Paul..

  • smooth and perfect

  • Is that charles grodin? Did someone already mention this? Chuck?

  • um simon and garfunkel are not gay, they are both married and both had several girl freinds during thier time, God, just because two men sing together and have a close freindship doesent mean their gay, thoughts like that is whats wrong with the world.

  • @JEFFMM71 theyve been buds since grade school

  • Wow,what harmonizing! I saw PS about 5 yrs ago, in Dallas when he came to see wife Brickell with her old band New Bo's play in Deep Ellum.

  • I wonder if they ever had sex

  • @turtles12 aww thats gross lol keep your fantasies to yourself

  • @turtles12 You should instead be wondering what happens to us when these talented men pass on. Who can replace them? Auto-Tune, Bieber, Gaga, another flash-in-the-pan shoved down our throats by the media? "No one" is the correct response, though some may work magic in a comparable way (whatever that means). All I know is we're in for a rough ride if we're left to the musical "progression" that many seem so fond of.

  • @KnightOneDark I bet they at least sucked cocks

  • Charles is such a annoying J

  • One of the deep and beautiful song in the word

  • Wow wow wow. This is not an easy song and they make it seem organic. Forget the stupid set-up, the performance is just beyond brilliant.

  • Fantastic performance. It would be better if that rude guy wasn't in it. I'm sure it's supposed to be funny, but I just wanna punch him in the face!

  • @cienferris Chuck needs a falcon punch in the throat.

  • god, this song is heartbreaking

  • Art's face at 1:33 is priceless!!

  • @1ring2rule3pigs lol yep i just had 2 rewind it 2c it again

  • @1ring2rule3pigs hahah, yeah saw that, hillarious

  • Paul's poetic genius and Art's beautiful beautiful soft voice.... Ah...

  • How Terribly Strange to be 70 !!

  • What a beautiful rendition of Old Friends. I'm with alanhatch. They need to get together one more time to sing this song. I hadn't realized Simon & Garfunkel had joined forces with Charles Grodin again. Grodin hosted an early episode of SNL and had a skit with Simon where he wore a Garfunkel wig trying to sing "Sounds of Silence" much to Simon's distraction. Grodin's raison d'être is to be obnoxious. Fortunately, the real Garfunkel came in to break up the proceedings.

  • The start of this song reminds me of Gymnopedi No.1.

  • There is a Garfunkel line in the song that sings about them not imagining sitting on a park bench together when they are 70.

That actually happens next year! Both turn 70 in 2011. They need to be reunited on some show to sing this song together.

  • thats charles grodin

  • snl...comedy

look up snl. the guy is an actor. all staged.

  • How can they not beat the shit out of that guy?

  • It's a comedy sketch. I think his character was intended to be obnoxious. Either way, kinda funny.

  • i know! wtf?! what kinda special was this anyway? i love this song.

  • Does anyone else think Paul's talking voice sounds like Winnie the Pooh?

Totally enchanting performance by the way.

  • interesting observation, sir

  • lol this was funny and touching. Great song. Damn! this video has it all!

  • i always thought this was a pretty gay scene

  • is this from a muppet show or something?

  • LOOL the intro made me laugh. And then the song was the best part, of course. beautiful yeahp

  • What a beautiful song, and masterfully delivered.

  • This song makes me cry just about every time I hear it . . . How did they write this when they were so young? Amazing.........

  • The bit with Charles Grodin is hilarious, especially if you're a creative person who has ever had to deal with someone in charge who wasn't.

  • i have some old fiends that remind me of bookends!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Does anyone know what year was this aired?

  • very annoying intro, was almost worth the wait to hear this song tho

  • it wasnt almost it was outrageously worth it to listen and watch this grand legend of a song

  • was charles grodin ever really funny? not sure.

  • "Old friends" is my favourite song of Simon and Garfunkel with "Scaborough Fair".

  • Never mind the "humour"... but goosebumps and shivers for Bookends

  • I had an old friend but the geezer died. it's hard to go on alone

  • i know how that feels mate, i wish you strength and New things on youre path.

  • Paul is so funny, because he's so serious.

  • All I like about those guys: sense of humor and talent.

  • what year is this?

  • it's from 1977. A great and very funny Saturday Night Live Special.

  • @antifafubel - This is the Paul Simon Special from 1977. Shot in the same studio as SNL, though.

  • I have a question....who surpasses S & G as a duo........no one

  • but you've answered has your question...

  • lol.

  • Was this from an actual show?

    OMG! is that Charles Grodin??!!

  • Hilarious beginning! Love the look Art gives Paul!!

  • Where??? Name the minute and seconds

  • great song but why dont they just get on with it the first few mins spoils it.?

  • I hope alot of people watch this. It is so beautiful!

  • I'm glad I did.

  • The chords in this song make me sad, let alone the words. And I don't mean that in a shitty way. I'm giving kudos on the mood setting 'minor' I'm guessing, chord progression.

  • They're major seventh chords, my favourite for that beauty with melancholy that you describe

  • Art makes me lol xD

He's just chillin' while Paul and that guy were bickering pffff =3

"Paw-el" that's how he says Paul. They certainly were very very good. I wish we still had talented celebrities these days...kinda embarressing and sad to think that a lot of our musical idols aren't as talented as our parent's musical idols....

  • what the fuck i don't do drugs. i go to a school were kids deal in class and i hate it. and i'm 14.

  • Good for you young man.

  • man why do people have to make a big deal out of other peoples interpratations of songs.(pretty sure i miss spelled that) i don't do drugs and i don't give a flying fuck what you think. you can say what ever you want you're a fucking idiot

  • fuck jesus

  • hha that guy makes me laugh XD

  • I don't think their will ever be such a harmonic

    beautiful musical partnership again.

TIME IT WAS AND WHAT A TIME IT WAS

    I have a photograph

  • People! stop arguing and enjoy one of the greatest musical partnerships of all time. Any opportunity to see these wonderful artists recorded live is a pleasure.

  • yeah

  • cierto¡¡¡¡ cerntanlly

  • cierto¡¡¡¡ cerntanlly , totally agree¡¡¡¡

  • What DVD or movie is this from?

  • beautiful performance

    Artie's so sweet!!

  • I hate this so phoney. They are not like this. It is hen Paul Simon wanted to be an actor. Did you all see Annie Hall:)

  • It looks the start of a hard-gay DVD,LOL!Without any offence. They're genius and beloved in all world.

  • cleanse your mind my friend...

  • Oh,it's a occasion to do it now!It's Easter!Yeeeeeeah!Thanks for the advice!Love S & G forever.Love you too.Frankie.

  • TOO friends,maybe?LOL!

  • charles grodin? hahaha

  • nice song with nice voice

  • LOL this is so funny! is it a skit or something? anyway, they sang the song beautifully.

  • These two are connected in their souls, for all they may fight against it. And our world is a more beautiful place for their connection. And what a terrible loss that they split up, as friends and partners. I've beeen a fan of Simon and Garfunkle since the 60's, and I still dont understand why they went their separate ways. Each in thier own right is talented, but together they are a masterpiece!

  • whoa, simon and garfunkel were lovers??? i cant wait to tell my dad, he loves them but is like a homophobe. he used to tell me that "me and julio down by the schoolyard" was really "me and JULIA" haha hes gonna flip out!!!

  • Um... no, they were never lovers and both are straight. Me and Julio, according to Paul Simon, has no real meaning.

  • i used to think it was a bout buying weed. well iwas wrong. you can see the conection though

  • ...no, you can't?! Why do you equate that song with buying marijuana? That's just incredibly stupid.

  • ok man don't have to make a big deal.

  • No, I do, because there's a lot of people like you that equate every song they hear about drugs. I don't understand where this attitude comes from. I think it's stupid.

  • you need to settle down. ok i was wrong you were right. every one is alowed to interpret any song any way they want no matter how stupid it sounds. i don't understand where your attitude comes from

  • Yeah, but of all the possible reasons why would it be about marijuana? I do possibly see the drug connection, fair point, because Me and Julio is about two people breaking the law. It's just that a lot of people give stupid interpretations for songs which are so far off the original intention, even when the artist themselves say what it's about people still come up with their interpretations. This is a general gripe. Not so much about you as an individual.

  • ok whatever

  • Comment removed

  • haha this is awesome. was this after they'd split up?

  • I love it. :)

  • The 70's and subltety was a tricky thing.

  • Are these the real art and paul?

  • yes

  • No, they are muppets.

  • This music is how I feel...all the time.

  • This has got to be one of the great highlights of Beethoven guys(? name) life...how great would this be? One of best songs of all time.

  • WHO HAS S&g 82- 83 TOUR BOOTELG?

  • isthis from a movie? what year

  • from about 1977

i think its the paul simon special released on video.

  • This is such a nice play. All three are pretty good actors

  • When Art & Paul sing and play guitar, my mind's at total peace...

Like the world's in total silence, only this couple can do this to me...

Thank you, that's all i can say.

  • excellent thanks for posting this.

  • this clip covers just about every positive emotion it's possible to feel - THANK YOU FOR POSTING IT

  • forgot to say how amusing the Chuck intro is and the balance is restored -- eventually! We all have a Chuck maybe!

  • can u imagine us years from today, sharing a park bench quietly, how terribly strange to be 70..

ahh..look at them now, they just turned 67 and nearly 70. their song connects to reality but it doesnt sound sad really.

i love these guys so much!

  • Well said.......I agree with you 100%

  • Haha, I thought this was going to be a behind the scenes tape of them actually rehersing.

  • haha is that charles grodin?!

  • it sure is

  • Few things make me misty-eyed. It happened here, just as Paul's guitar began the "Bookends" theme. What amazing musicians.

  • Miamidavid....Thanks for saying that... I thought I was the only one. Now I don't feel like such a fool.

  • You're quite welcome. You obviously have great taste in music! :)

  • Too good and too nostagic.

  • This is from the Paul Simon special, 1975. I don't know which special or with who.

  • Just beautiful. Thanks for uploading this. Hmmmm...

  • I love...

    it is a fabulus video!!

  • Great play!

  • Absolutely wonderful! Funny and beautiful - perfect combination.

  • who is that tool? umm in case you didn't notice this was obviously written, it's called acting.

  • That was great! Thanks for posting it.

  • Who is that F...ing TOOL!

  • My next guest is my very VERY dear old friend!

    HAHAAHA

  • Fucking awesome, when and where is this from??

  • I believe this is from a holiday special, with Charles Grogin as the Host

  • wow, that's just incredible. I've NEVER seen them so relaxed and intimate, and not at each other's throats. Talk about saying a lot with so little. The way they look at each other.. and also, VERY VERY clever and funny bit...what a pure gem. Thank you so much!

  • `Ha Ha.... But What a song !Paul Simon you are one of the greats.

  • A beauty

  • but the rendition is truly truly brilliant...

  • this looks like being from a sitcom about being simon and garfunkel or something... :P

and the intro is the silliest thing i've ever heard.. its like the play which joey writes for ross and chandler for them to say sorry to each other (season 5 or something)..

it completely discounts the quiet elegance and dignity of the song!!

  • Um, though, I have come to enjoy the sort of silly, uniqueness of the "friends" characters... it's NOT the same level as these guys at all. That WAS a TV show, scripted and very contrived to meet a market I'm sure.

These guys, created words and music which greatly harmonized a generation of revolution in thought, action and consciousness...just not the same thing at all... but, you're probably young :)

  • i don't think you quite understood what i meant. the silly intro "my special wouldn't be special without you" is way to trite for this song. that cheesy line belongs to a sitcom like friends. this song is in quite another league.

yes, i am young.. but not stupid :-)

  • i totally agree. glad to see it's not just us old fogies who get this stuff. Thanks for the clarification.

  • ha ha... well i had a look at my old post.. it could have easily construed to mean what you thought.. no problem... :-)

  • The intro was cheesy and stupid... but perhaps that's the way reality is. The music was sublime and perfect. And yes, I am older and cynical.
