Regardless of the eventual disposition of this question, let's offer some perspective here: In 2 postseasons with the Red Sox, Schilling was 6-1. Those are very nice numbers but hardly "amazing".
Gutsy pitcher and a tremendous competitor but Curt - saw you on ESPN last night and you repeated the phrase " I THINK " over twenty times during you segment. Dude even though you are a warrior, get some help with that word whisker now that you're a national media figure.
assuming he gets in, there are the fun questions of "when" and "what cap." not first ballot, the voters are very selective. not second or third, as those belong to maddux, glavine, johnson, pedro. my best guess: between ballots 4 and 8. doug goudie argues schilling will go in as a dback. i disagree because the hof picks the team where the player left his most indelible mark. what is more indelible than the bloody sock already enshrined in the hall?
bill james has one of the most reliable tests of hof likelihood called the "monitor" score. schilling's score is 171 which is solid. the highest score of a modern pitcher not in the hof is lee smith at 135. everyone higher is in. schill's score is higher than niekro, sutton, marichal, smoltz, and close to hoffman and glavine. (blyleven had 120) i doubt first ballot but he'll get in within 5-7 years, i think.
I want Curt in the hall of fame. 2004 is something the mlb wont ever be able to capture again. He literally gave us his body, heart and soul that year. I miss you Curt. You were truly a blessing to have in a Sox uniform
Yeah, I think so. As a pitcher, he is pretty much a HOFer, the numbers are there. As a person, he is a f#cking phony. All his righteous talk against steroids and yet Ramirez and Ortiz on the Soz and Luis Gonzalez on the Diamonbacks, gimme a break. Furthermore, at the age of 35 he suddenly transforms from an above average pitcher to an unhittable mouth-breathing domination machine yet today in retirement he is a grotesque fat slob. It makes me wonder.
People need to realize that if Schilling were to go into the Hall, he would go in as a member of the Phillies, not Red Sox, so put that bias aside. Anyway, I would vote for Curt but I doubt he'll get at least 75% of the Ballot. He dominated my Braves in the Postseason(93 and 01), is an amazing contributor off the field, and one of the Greatest Control Pitchers of All Time(2nd in K/BB Ratio, 1st in "Modern Era"). He'll be on the ballot for a while, but I don't think he'll make it.
Wow the comments made after my comments show you something. If it was a postseason HOF sure, Schilling would be in, but if HOF only saw the postseason to let ppl in, how bout Jack Morris? Kirby Puckett, RIP, basically had 2,300 hits but is known for his postseason for 1 game, the catch he made and walkoff in the '91 series, which game 7 trumps the bloody sock game. If the bloody sock game was game 7 then its close, but Jack Morris, Game 7, World Series vs John Smoltz?
@JerseyBoys918 Puckett was a Career .318 Hitter, 10 Time All Star, and Won 6 Gold Gloves. That's why he made it. I'd like to see Jack Morris in, but if you compare the seasons he had to Schilling and adjusted full seasons, Curt has a better shot.
If you put him in based on postseason performance, because thats what he'll complain about and what everyone else will focus on cuz 216 career wins and no Cy Young awards, does not look like a HoF. but if u put him in just for the '01 WS and Game 6 of '04 ALCS, Then you should put Jack Morris in, cuz he had alot more wins and he threw 10 innings in a Game 7 of a World Series!
@JerseyBoys918 hey, listen here u faggot ass mother fucker. curt deserves it. he was stellar through his career and never used performance enhancing drugs unlike half the baseball players of today. he's a tough guy cough cough game 6 2004 alcs cough cough. and in case you didn;t know you little retarded fuck....POSTSEASON #'S MEAN MORE THAN REGULAR SEASON #'s. he laid it on the line every night and never gave up. so do yourself a favor and go fuck off you worthless piece of shit.
@patscelticsredsox2 The absurdly vitriolic tone of your comment to someone else's respectful opinion pretty much obscures anything you have to say on the subject. You should learn how to argue with someone based on facts rather than insults.
Schilling does not have the regular season numbers to go with his great post season numbers. If he had at least 50-60 more wins and .25-.50 less on his ERA...then you can make a case of him being a 3rd to 5th year Hall of Famer. Randy Johnson on the other hand has 300+ wins, over 4000 K's, and is one of the 5 greatest left-handed pitchers in baseball history. No hall of fame for Curt.
Schilling was a dominant pitcher and a great competitor...he never really knew when to shut his mouth though.I think he gets in,still i would have had much more respect for him if he just kept his mouth shut at times...that has been his only flaw in his career.
His 2.23 ERA in 133 postseason innings is remarkable. Since 1980, only John Smoltz is a comparable postseason pitcher. Greg Maddux, by contrast, is often criticized, unfairly, for less-than-stellar postseason pitching. In fact, he had a 3.27 ERA in 198 innings, which is actually a better postseason ERA than virtually all other starters since 1980 (Johnson, Pedro, Clemens, Glavine, Saberhagen--you name them) with over 80 innings of postseason work, except Smoltz. 2.23, then, is stunning!
Im hate the Redsox and Schilling but I think a 6-0 postseason record with Boston 3 World Series 3 20 win seasons and 3016 strikeouts. I think he deserves it and your hearing this from a diehard Yankees fan. He was Really good.
The HOF gold standard for pitchers is 300 wins, just as 3,000 hits is for hitters. For him to get in with 216 wins would be like a hitter getting in with 2,160 hits. Now, Don Mattingly had 2,153 hits and he does not stand a chance. Therefore, Schilling, FORGET ABOUT IT!!!
Wins are the absolute worst stat to judge a pitcher by. For years, Schilling played on teams where he got awful run support and was on awful hitting teams.
That being said, Schilling does not deserve the Hall. Yes, his postseason record and 3,000 K's are impressive, but Bert Blyleven has both as well and he's not in.
Bottom line, if Schilling goes in but Blyleven does not, the Hall is a sham.
I say Curt Schilling is well deserving of being a Hall of Famer. Weather it is with the Red Sox or Phillies or even Diamondbacks, he deserves that plaque.
Without Curt Schilling, you would have never seen World Championships in Phoenix, or Boston without him. How is "The Big Unit" doing? Obviously, Randy Johnson isn't 10% the Pitcher Curt Schilling was, especially after that Meltdown against the Angels back in the 2005 Division Series.
I could not think of any other Pitcher having the Stones to pitch a clutch 6th Game on a Cut Ankle, especially when it is you're team down 3-2 in the series.
I'm a die-hard Red Sox Fan i'm not saying he should or shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame. But Curt certainly brought alot of Excitement to the Teem in 04. And i would think it was Awesome if he retired in a Red Sox Uniform. Thanks Curt for the Memories you almost had your first no-hitter. And to those who think the Bloody Sock is a fake i feel bad for you.
I'm a Red Sox fan, too. And although I don't think he deserves to be there, Schilling will be a Hall of Famer. BUT, if he is allowed to go in as anything other than a Philly, I'll call for a congressional investigation. Would you let Paul Molitor to go in as a Blue Jay or Tom Seaver as a White Sox? His best years were with Philadelphia and if he is let in, it should be with the Phillies. Just because his greatest moment in television history was with Boston doesn't mean shit.
Well i'm not sure if he has enough wins to really qualify for the Hall anyway. But i do think overall he had good years with the Phillies even with the D-back when they won it all in 2001 to steal it from the Yankees. lol And he had moments of greatness with the Red Sox 2004 finishing 20+4. And mamy won't forget about his ankle injury of 2007. Which could of been a factor in his struggles last year to his retirement this Spring. Even though age was a factor. So it could go either way.
He won about 140 of his 216 wins with Philadelphia. That's why I say that if he gets in, it's as a Philly. If he gets in, it's only because of his postseason moments. I don't like him as a person and I also think he's a cancer in the clubhouse. That's why every few years, teams got rid of him. He was a better than average pitcher whose best moments were in the post season. If I had the vote, I wouldn't let him in. But he'll get in.
He is not a hall of famer. This clown won only 216 wins regular season!!! Fuck these clowns saying he deserves it. Comparing this clown to Steve Carlton, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson. What a fucking bunch of shit. Just cause this fucking clown end his career injured in Boston. Come on this guy is a piece shit steroid user. This guy suffers from roid rage. Fuck him
I'm a lifelong red sox fan and I hate the bastard. He's a lying egomaniacial idiot narc who needs his ass kicked. That fact that he was on the 04 and 07 teams almost ruined it for me. Good pitcher though.
Sorry, but from a long suffering Red Sox fan. Curt Schilling is not a Hall of Famer. He barely has 200 wins, had several subpar seasons, and has no tenure with one team that defined him. He is a mere hired gun who bounces from team to team. And worse yet, he is a cancer in every clubhouse on days off. Phillies manager Jim Fregosi said of Schilling: " On days he pitched, he was our work horse. The four days between starts, he was a horse's ass ". Good pitcher, not a Hall of Famer.
Curt is a HoFamer for sure, he is one of the all time great big game/postseason pitchers and those numbers compare very well to several first ballot hall of famers.
