Most of the original retrievers were long-haired and black. They were called wavy-coated retrievers, and they looked almost exactly like Mr. Murphy here. They are ancestral to the golden and the flat-coat. The wavies had the wave bred out of them, and became the flat-coats. The yellow or reddish wavies became the goldens, although there is a specific strain of yellow wavy derived from Baron Tweedmouth's lines. Murphy is quite a lucky dog.
