I've heard liberals, in the NYT on talkshows etc., defend Bill Clinton all the time. But he wasn't a supporter of any leftwing policies except a couple stupid ones like affirmative action. He signed more rightwing legislation than both Bushes combined. He was the most pro-dealthpenalty president of my lifetime.

I think he instictively knew that they're dumb. And all he had to do was speak in a smarmy tone and give them affirmative action and abortion, and he would have them on his side.
