I have a similar instrument that I am assembling from Bali. It has bamboo sound tubes under the bars but the bamboo is cut for the correct width for each but the lengths have not been cut. Are all these bamboo sound tubes the same length?
I play Javanese Gamelan in Cardiff in the U.K. . If you look carefully you can see they pinch the bar they have just struck as they hit the next, takes a bit of learning but soon becomes second nature.
Not random, organised; they are both playing the same thing. Each instrument is perfectly in tune, but they are tuned to slightly different pitches relative to each other. This produces the wavering sound known as "beats" caused by phase cancellation and reinforcement.
I love how gamelan often sounds vaguely diatonic, but more elusive and mysterious...
