If it's any indication that you're just "going against the grain", Anthony, is that all other critics have received this album with over 80%. Whokill is an accomplishment that is just the artistic vision and evolution we need in music today. I don't think you were listening hard enough.
I've pimped tUnE-yArDs to quite a few and everybody loves Merill's voice from the get go. Can't say I agree with her voice being inaccessible based on that.
I still agree with your review. I love Gangsta, Bizness and Powa but the other tracks just don't match up for me.
do you actually get all the music you review legally? just wondering... In case your answer is "yes", I can't imagine the amount of money you've invested so far.!!!=O
Hey, do you know Malajube?? It's an awesome indie band from Quebec, and they just released their new album La Caverne, you really should check it out and review it!
Maybe you like the androgyny in Merril's voice in same way you like Victoria Legrand's voice so much. Androgyny is something the two voices have in common.
Yay, you reviewed it! Though the album is more a 17/20 for me, I can understand your gripes. I do wish you had mentioned "My Country" (my personal favorite off the album, followed closely by "Powa" and "Bizness"), but otherwise a very thorough and reasoned review.
Yes, the song you linked ostensibly reminded me of Bitte Orca. Even her voice sounds like the singer! Androgynous, indeed. I'm gonna check out the album if I can.
Also, will you review Bill Callahan's Apocalypse? I mean, I don't think you've ever reviewed him, and he's certainly an eminent artist. Thanks, Anthony.
I have not yet heard the album in its entirety, but what I have heard is from mediocre to very good. Nothing too great, but nothing falls flat on its face for me. I listened to "gangsta" because you said it wasnt good and thought that it was alrightish until the bit at the end (about the last minute) where the beat is minimal and sometimes non-existant, then it started to bug me. The singers voice is part of this, she sounds like a teenage Yma Sumac. This is not always a bad thing, she has style
I didn't quite like the song "Bizness" when I first listened to it, but perhaps other tracks will be more enjoyable. I love in-your-face albums that shake the music world upside down and crash everything that people expect, so I'll give tUnE-yArDS a complete listen.
Please give that new Planningtorock single another chance Anthony, you might end up liking it.
I've definitely noticed polarized opinions on the album. I personally am completely lovestruck. The melodies and grooves are great, I love the eccentricity and energy, I love Merrill's voice and personality, and I love that it's so catchy yet still experimental. It's so far my AOTY despite really enjoying some other stuff. It does take a lot of risks, so I can see why it'd turn people off, but those risks pay off for me (Gangsta is actually one of my favorites). Anyway, thanks for a fair review.
I liked it a bit more than you, but still, nice review. You really nailed down the description of her voice. I know it's a few weeks old, but I was sort of sad you never reviewed Lykke Li. I really enjoyed that album, (Though I'm a sucker for pop like it.) I would love a retroactive review.
Also, track review for The King of Carrot Flowers, Pts 2 and 3.
Damn, I can't believe you called Gangsta "annoying," that song rules!
I don't find this album to be inaccessible, or Merril's voice to be that weird. It's certainly no less eccentric than albums by Animal Collective, Of Montreal, MGMT or Joanna Newsom that have been very popular in recent years. She's an insanely dynamic performer and songwriter. There are a few places where the album drags but overall I think it's a courageous piece of self-expression and is full of fantastic songs.
Please review some or all of the following: Curren$y - Covert Coup; Del The Funky Homosapien - Golden Era; Blue Sky Black Death - NOIR; Amon Tobin - ISAM; Prefuse 73 - The Only She Chapters
Also: she has an INCREDIBLE fearless voice. She could easily be a Feist-type singer/songwriter if she chose but I'm impressed that she chooses to push the boundaries and create this music that few would probably dare.
I probably wouldn't have been into this had I not seen her play live. She has a lot of passion and charisma and truly believes in her music. Many of these tracks were played live when I saw her 9 months or so ago when she toured with Xiu Xiu and I instantly recognised them again when I heard this record. She has such a distinct and fully formed sound that it's hard to ignore or pigeonhole for that matter.
