I LOVE(D) Roy Orbison's signing, his guitar was well played, too. The lyrics to this song's first line are WRONG: they should read "Every time I look into your LOVING eyes..." What a VOICE he had! FOUR Octaves of range! He could sing Hi, Low and everywhere in between. He is missed.
A song always sounds slightly different when it's played in a movie, a little faster or in a different key. This is how I imagine "You Got It" would have sounded on the big screen. :-)
This is the only singer I've ever heard who could embrace the ranges from baritone through tenor up through countertenor and always stay on-key. Most others all only have a single range, the more versatile capable of embracing two ranges. Orbison embraced three ranges almost effortlessly...a genuine phenomena of our times.
Very true chicago6584, this is why if you do here a cover of a RO track it normally sounds terrible, so not many try. His range was such that even Elvis himself said that Roy had the greatest pop voice ever.
Sorry, but i cannot agree with you in 100%. This is obvious that covers of Roy's tracks sound horrible, but Elvis said that Roy was the greatest singer of all time, and his voice was rather operatic than pop.
chicago6584 . . . There are several vocal ranges called octaves. Most singers live with single octave voice ranges. It is extremely rare to be able to sing in multiple octaves. Roy came along and sings in (I believe) 5 different octaves. If you really listen you can tell when he bridges into the next octave. It takes a master to be able to sing like Roy does. Most singers don't even try to reach Roy's higher ranges.
A nice gesture from Jeff Lynne to write and produce something Orbison could have recorded in his early 60's heyday. I always felt that John Lennon would have done something similar for one of his R&R idols had he lived.
Is it just me or does anybody else think his voice sounds "high" on this recording, on the recording that I am used to, his voice doesn't sound like this. It has to be an outtake of the song.
@staggmovie Yea definitely, I do some studio work on the side, and theres a very noticeable pitch shift. They do this quite a bit on mainstream radio as well.
