This is perhaps the fastest performance of the Hallelujah Chorus I have ever heard...but I like it. Usually, if performed at the "usual" tempo, it would have a solemn, majestic flavor; but this performance is more lively and energetic.
Please pardon me, but did not Herr Händel specifically ask for a MM tempo of 72 quarter-notes per minute? This sounds like its in cut time. This sounds more like the overture to "Le Nozze di Figaro" by Mozart at this tempo. How interesting! Where's Sir Neville when you need him?
Don't get me wrong! I love it! But I wouldn't conduct this piece this fast.
Love the light touch the sopranos phrase at 1:35 to 1:45. Wonderful at this speed if accurately done (a train wreck if not!) I'm ok with the speed, but it doesn't leave much room for other nuances.
Fascinating rendition. I can say with certainty that I've never heard this chorus taken so fast. This is part of a newer generation of performers trying to highlight the original, dramatic nature of this oratorio, much like McCreesh's 'Messiah for the Millenium.' Here we hear the sense of joy contained within this passage from Revelation... Very interesting. Definitely a radical account, relatively speaking.
Why not slow down a little? The tempo of this rendition could be compared to a normal performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebees. Also, this sounded somewhat soft, even with the volume of my speakers set to the maximum.
I like the high tempo, but there could have been more give and take with it, slow it down for the really big majestic parts and the end, but let the middle sections fly.
I think this was too fast and it was as if it was rushed through. Its a beautiful song and it needs to be sung in a way where people can follow and not feel stressed. This song sounds very stressed.
also too fast in my opinion. One looses the tension and majesty at this tempo, especially when the sopranos start their long held notes. One runs the gambit here and is in danger of taking on a "bugs bunny kill the wabbit" quality.

Marc Minkowski about recording of the film soundtrack (from CD-booklet):
The fever of excitement and the tension became our greatest allies. (...) certainly it's not like the Messiah we'd prepared in concert or the one we would have recorded in a studio. The Messiah, more passionate than usual, is what William Klein and his prophetic eye have inspired in us."
Stegail, I must agree. This is the best version on youtube. Although legato699 says it is much too fast, look at the energy and clarity Les Musiciens du Louvre puts into this music! IT IS INCREDIBLE. HALLELUJAH!
Hallelujah at 3 Gbps !! Very light and powerful at the same time...

It would appear that the conductor took the tempo at 72 per half note; rather than 72 per quarter note. Interesting.

Interesting experiment. But it should have stayed in the rehearsal hall.
It's even with modern high speed ideals too fast.
How on earth do you adapt the rest of Messiah to this speed?

as long as the intonation and rhythm is correct, im happy with the tempo
who says it has to stay slow? the speed can symbolize the joy they hold in rejoicing for God and Jesus Christ
