This soprano is technically very green and Haendel's music has no mercy with uncouth voices: she does the aria because she's "natural" but with every note one thinks how much better the same note could have been sung.
Not to mention the awful pronunciation: one cannot understand a single word.
Ms Berganza shouldn't have chosen this one eve n because she doesn't really pay attention to her suggestions
Yeah, it sounds like she has no idea about Baroque stylings at all. Not that she needs to do an "historical performance" or anything, but c'mon, girl! It's not... I don't know, Brahms (or somebody else Romantic).
If withholding vibrato and then starting it again makes something stylistic...
There's a lot more to singing Baroque music than the ornamentation! I was just using Brahms' music as an example to refer to the heaviness in her voice. Baroque music has it's roots in dance, yeah? and therefore has to be sung with a limber voice. To me, it feels likes she's baring down on her voice.
I get so tired of people who regard Baroque music as something completely diffrent from all other styles. Like it's from another planet. That's completely artificial. There always has been a tradition from sing from (e.g.) Handel-Mozart-Rossini-Bellini-Verdi-Puccini. Of course there are differences in style, but this soprano manages very well. Are you one of those people who for Baroque music only want to listen to the Emma Kirkby's in this world and not to, say, Renée Fleming?
Are you one of those people who thinks Renee Fleming sings baroque music well?
No, I'm kidding. Partly. Yeah, I agree that there is a direct line, that those composers were all building on each other. I think she does some things well, but this is not a sound that I love in baroque music. I'm not saying I want her to sing straight tone or anything like that. But this is not "Baroque-enough" for me. I know that's vague... it just is or it isn't, and I don't know that I have a better explanation.
@g4thz@Roe27Ger First of all, she's probably nervous as hell to be singing for Teresa Berganza. I know I would.
I think you're both missing the forest for the trees. She has a lovely instrument but lacks the technique to support the sound. There's no legato, and the fact that she attacks many of the notes/phrases with a straight tone then thunks into a quavery vibrato shows she's not ready to sing this stuff. Her vowels are also not pure, so the color of the language is off, too.

@mikaoperam I have 3 good advises for you:
1. learn to read carefully;
2. learn to understand what you have read;
3. ask questions if you do NOT understand what you read.
and then you can put a reaction. IF NECESSARY!

I absolutely disagree: she makes very stilish appoggiatura! It is very far removed from Brahms! Do you really know what you're talking about?
